***How To Get A Placement***

How about this one ... a few months ago, I was getting spammed unmercifully by another producer who insisted on clogging up my inbox with mediocre, cookie-cutter hip-hop tracks. Despite my repeated pleas, he continued to spam me not matter how many times I asked him to stop.

So one day, I received another email from dude (loaded with 3 or 4 wack tracks) - and I started looking at the email to see if I could find some info on him (maybe get his number by looking up his domain name, or whatever). When I checked out the CC: field ... it turned out that there were 600+ recipients of that email (and some looked "official"). So, I copied the CC emails for my own purposes ...

Now I didn't start spamming these people (I dont advocate spamming) But one day, in a moment of frustration, I decided to send one single email to that list ... and I included an "opt-out" link for anyone on the list who wanted to stop my emails. I included 5 or 6 LINKS to MP3s (I didnt attach them) ... and I started getting replies that people liked the music.

Long story short, after my 3rd email (I sent one a week), I was contacted by hip-hop legend KOOL G RAP and now ... I have several placements on his upcoming album RICHES, ROYALTY & RESPECT.

And with that ... I have gained the attention of some other labels and major artists ... and I would love to post more details, but thats all I can say right now. But, I will just say that once ONE PERSON in the business likes you, it makes others pay more attention to your work.

HARD WORK PAYZ OFF!!! One piece of advice I have for my fellow producers ... scruitinize your tracks to the fullest BEFORE you send them out. If it takes you a month to make a track the hottest it can be, DO IT. Because in the end, the person listening to the radio wont know (or care) how long it took to make that record ... they just care that its HOT.

Thanks for letting me share, FP!!! Look for my homey KOOL G RAP's new album "RICHES, ROYALTY & RESPECT" coming soon. Peace!!!

yo do anyone know of any websites where i can contact companies that are looking for audio production for projects and stuff? im tryna get into that kinda stuff..let me know

It's many things you can do.. One is market yourself and your services, people have to know what you do before they hire you to do anything.. Get business cards.. send them to different companies..

Get a website of your own.. I don't want to hand walk you through it, but it's work and you have to put your time in..

1. Find the company
2. Find the advertising department of the company.

These are the people that hire producers for commercials.. They like to hire freelancers cause it's cheaper for them..

I mean there is Modernbeats.com they have opportunities, but they charge you to submit and you have the chance of your work not getting chosing.. but they charge $10 per submission.. I did it once or twice and it is not a rip off, you can get work and placements.. I did, but I refuse to pay someone to listen to my work or pay to have it used.. I dn't care if it's $5 or $100.. But that's another route for you..

PMP Worldwide is the dopest I've seen - www.pmpworldwide.com

and dynamicproducer.com also has some good stuff. You can also check out my homie's site www.ARLive.com -sometimes they post opportunities there (to get you to sign up to be on one of the calls).

Do nothing. I just got my first (major to me but probably nothing huge) placement. Out of everything I've done I didn't end up doing anything for this one, it came to me. Won't tell ya'll what it is though so I don't fall victim to the FP Jinx.

BigJproductions, to me it sounds like you're a bit too cocky, and well, not criticizing(Spells), your own work enough. Always go through you beats 10-15 times after you've finished it, and listen to each track independently and then just 2 of them together. You say you have 3000 beats, and im sad to say this but i honestly dont believe that all of them is the best indie productions in the world. But ofcourse, i havent heard your music so i dont know shit about it - thats just my 2 cents (;

GREAT thread( shit s almost 5 years old :O). alot of great opinions. I'm by no means a successful anything in music but all the info is great.
forgetting to mention image though (physical). which is alot more important than people think it is

shout outs to jackpot, you are the man! that something my bro damebeats probably went through. peace to jackpot and to all producers on the come up

Awesome post. The point is to work hard so that you can be in the right places at the right times and and to be smart by staying busy doing those thing that get the best results. You can make a song and make money from that song while sitting around doing nothing, if you trust your manager to do his/her job. I recommend doing the foot work yourself when starting off in this business.

Great post. My question is in the realm of proximity. Let's say a producer, such as myself, has some pretty hot beats and songs and is slowly making a name for himself on the internet (emphasis on slowly). However, this producer is constrained by geographical realities i.e. I live and work in Barbados (the little Caribbean island the Rihanna's from). Apart from spending way too much money flying back and forth, what are the options for someone like me in terms of getting a placement?

@Strat Carter How much would it cost to go to Venzuela once or twice a year? Based on location, I would think that would be a great place to start. How many schools are in you area?

Any opportunity is good. Just take it, when you make a name for yourself... MOVE UP!
