Kaminota - thank you. See, I sort of understood the value of collaboration - but your scenario sort of adjusts my view. I was looking at it as something "I might as well do" rather than something "I should've been doing" for years now. Distributing my work as often and as far reaching as possible through collaboration only enhances my chances of being heard. I don't know why, but I'm finding your common sense scenario so enlightening right now.
The only thing about what you say that makes me nervous is the 'gift of gabb'- I ain't got it. I'm educated and talented but definitely much better at expressing myself through writing than I am with speaking- does this type of talent grab a 'hype-man', manager or 'beat broker'?

I too am not much of a talker. But I just so happened to hook up with people thru the Friend of a friend basis. In my experience it's about being 100 and doing what you say you will do. Don't make promises not even if you can fulfill them. I say to hell with a manager, if you can do it yourself. Just talk with confidence and people will listen and want to work with you. Get at people that interest you. You are gonna get turned down, but it's all good. Cause in this game it's all about timing. And you have to learn how to keep relationships fresh.

I got a good friend of mine who could talk circles around dudes and he told me .... you can't always holla at cats about business... sometimes you just need to holla at them to chill or talk on a personal level. That's how you build a bond or connection. But most people like myself don't want to talk or chill if it's not concerning business. So you got to take that into account too.

The gift of gab will consist of being informed, being yourself and believing in yourself and your product and knowing when to turn it on or off. If you are not informed and conversate with someone who is ... Your gonna look silly.

I know people that can get me a break with Currency, Mia X, Fiend and so forth just cause I gave them a few free ones back in the day. If I did the whole 6 degrees of separation... I could end up at Drake. I'm not bragging, cause that's not me. It's an example of what building relationships can do for you. Just through night club promoters, sound engineers, tours guys, mixing engineers, relationship with people who record at different studios.

But if you are gonna use these relationships make sure you got some good product to show off. Or you will waste everyone's time and jeopardize your relationships.

I think a Rapper said they use to walk in the studio with some weed and just chill and some how he'd end up on tracks...

Mannie Fresh got his first production with Greg D cause the original beat Greg had was garbage and he thought he could improve it. And he was just there to do some Dj scratching...

Personally I got tired of going to people and people never coming thru.... so I decided last year to do it on my own. By doing it, I mean just become a local artist. Once I get my money right ... I plan to finish building my studio and recording records ... Use all the guidelines here and my previous experience to get it played on the radio and do some shows... then go on and produce for more local people. And once I have my studio up I'll be able to work with people anytime and develop artist too.
I want to build a brand and a sound and really don't care for national success. So it's all about what you want. You might want something totally different from the other guy. It's all about time. I sing R&B so my time is different than that of some rappers ... you know. And my production span will be even longer.

Just don't limit your self. The music aint' going nowhere. Take the time to build relationships with real people. You don't have to be on so manager bullshit to keep it real.

But hey if you do get a manager. That will free you up to just focus on music. That's great but still work on your people skill.

Very good scenario, but, you have to be extremely good to get interest, or you need to be what the people want, so for some people it will be difficult for others.

Yep it's all about PRODUCT.... but I know I made that clear. No body will want to mess with you if they think you're wack or they feel they can do better. But that is very Subjective....

Exactly, but you stressed the point about relationships too, and I think both are important. I'm extremely new to the game, and I am only 16. Every oportunity I get with someone who is into music, I socialise with them, but I am limited as I live in the UK and there isn't many people I can mix with who have connections with studios and things, as most of them in my area are suicidal rock 'artists' who all want to kill each other, and themselves, yet always fail. So I find it hard to get into the right sort of area, or anything. I guess I'll have to escape to America one day in the future, and pursue my dream of living in New York and also being part of the rap game.

Have you red the whole THREAD.... PLUS I used THE REFERENCE HERE to my thread Keys to Success with music.

I encourage you to read more and more....

You don't really have to jump the pond to get what you want. I'm sure if you want to work with Taio Cruz or Craige David ... it's possible. I don't know. I won't claim to know the UK. All this is just advice.

If you feel like moving to New York will benefit you .... go ahead. But start connecting with people before you make that move. New York is full of people. Moving is a big gamble. I'm not an advocate of gambling. I advocate hard work and grinding on a more secure level. Sometimes you got to gamble but I don't always recommend it for every situation.

In your case I don't know if you have exacerbated every contact .... So I'd recommend you choose the area you would like to move to study the music scene and start making contacts .
Now if anyone wants to ask me about PRODUCT... they can read the whole thread over. But my response post will be short and sweet... The better you are the more of a chance you have of getting on.:)

Also I wish others would chime in and give advice.... I know there are others who are way more inform than I. Hmmmm... anyone!?!?

Nah, I did jump it, and :rofl:Craig David and Taiyo, Jesus, saying that... It doesn't get much better over here... Still yeah, thanks for the link, reading up on it now.

P.s. It's been my dream to live in New York since I was really really young, and I have been a lover of rap, and the likes of Gang Starr, Notorious, Pete Rock, Jeru the Damaja, Kanye, and things for years, I don't know about everything, and to be honest, I haven't got a clue what type of music is going on the charts around me, last I heared it was the Black Eyed Peas, so you know... You probably know more. But I know what I like, you know? Anyway, cheers for the link, was helpful.

Man if an oppertunity like that came around, you gots to be on your supreme A-game, no doubt, good post

I define success as having my own island like Branson, and I'm gonna reach my goals by bitching about Lil Wayne to anybody who'll listen.

Good post but you forgot a few things (not hating just adding some info). #1 MAKE SURE YOU GET A GOOD MUSIC LAWYER!!! Not only will they help keep you from getting f***ed, but they too can shop your songs/tracks to people. (Remember lawyers are greedy and love $$$ offer them a % or a cash "finder's fee" for getting you placements). Also make sure that if whatever label/artist uses your beat and it gets shelved you will either a) be compensated anyways in a small lump sum payment (labels will pay upward of $100k sometimes just to throw song away, trust me it's a write off) and b) all the rights to your beat revert back to you or c) both. Anyways I hope my add ons were helpful.

thats really interesting haha, i hope i run into that one day....

This thread was a great read. My first post and I wanted to Acknowledge a couple dudes who are putting forth valueable insight.
Jackpot, Kaminota, legal dollaz thx.

I posted this in another thread but I don't think it will get any real recognition so I'll re-post it here. Now keep in mind....there's hundeds of ways to get a placement. Sometimes it may take a long time and sometimes it is very quick, sometimes it may be 6-9 months before you get another placement once you've placed, others it could take a few years. Politics & relationships play a big factor as well.......

All of you anti-industry cats who think you're above the system might as well quit today and not even waste your life chasing something you fundamentally aren't even prepared to work for......

For others, this is some insight to answer a few questions on how some placements can happen.......

-SCENARIO-
"Here's a scenario of how a placement can happen."

Let's say it's 2009 right? Let's say you moved to Los Angeles in January and you have no idea what to do and know nobody. You signup with Ascap and they send you some information about up & coming Ascap events coming up. You go to 2 of the Ascap events in February. Now let's say you have your DEMO CD with you when you go, you dress accodrdingly and keep professional at all times.

You meet a person who is managing a couple artists and producers and you present your DEMO to them. They call you back a few days later and tell you they are feeling your music and would like to sit down with you and talk about possible management. So you go sit down with them and details get discussed and after a week of having the contract looked over by your lawyer you sign.

The manager invites you to a few studio sessions at a very well known studio. During those sessions you run into Fergie, Will I Am, JR Rotem, Jasper Cameron & a rep from Interscope. Your manager formally introduces you to these people as they come and go as his new producer, tells them you're hot and that you could be the next big producer. Your manager pays for a couple studio sessions for you over the next couple weeks and you meet more and more people and get your name circulating throughout that studio.

Then one day your manager tells you that Akon is in the room next to yours and him and Akon have a good relationship and that he'd like to invite Akon to listen to a few of your tracks. Akon kindly accepts, your manager pumps you up to Akon to show confidence in your music. You play 5 or 6 tracks for 45 seconds each. Akon tells you he is really feeling the 3rd track you played and if you could send that over to him he'd love to write to it.

Your engineer mixes the track a little and gives it to Akon. 2 weeks later you learn that Akon has demo'd up a song to your track. You're excited and hope he keeps it. During this span you meet more people at events, studio sessions, concerts, etc. 4 months later you learn your song has made the cut for Akon's album and they send over the paperwork, split sheets, etc. Akon's album is released in December of 2009 and goes platinum, you are now getting some nice publishing checks.

Your track gets some mention around Akon's camp and others and the Interscope rep who met you a couple times over the course of 2009 wants to sit down with you and offer you a $75,000 Publishing Deal through Universal Music Group.

You accept after a couple weeks of deliberations over numbers of commitments and percentages. During these couple weeks you learn that a song you wrote to one of your tracks was playing in the studio when Tiffany Evans walked by and she asked if she could have it. You now have more leverage for your offer from UMG and they raise it to $100,000 and 12 commitments. You sign and your manager uses his relationships to try to get you on as many projects as possible.

You get your Pub Check in May of 2010 for $40,000 of your $100,000 for landing 2 placements. You come to find out your song on Tiffany Evans has been chosen for a single.......

And the cycle continues.......

There's millions of ways to get placements, get on, etc, this is just one of many possible scenarios.......

yo fam you just inspired me soo much
