Prince vs. Rick James - Who's Better

I have listened to enough of my parent's albums to be able to judge Prince as an artist.
Sign of the Times, Purple Rain and Around the world in a day were my favorites. Unless you listen to old school artists like Teddy Pendegrass, Gerald Levert and Luther(no last name needed) , you wouldnt appreciate Rick's talents. That's all. I like Prince but Rick was just more soulful. Yeah Prince had soul but he played a lot of material where he couldnt showcase it. Teena Marie had way more soul than Prince and she was white. The crazy thing is I respect Prince as a musician but he aint fuking with Rick when it comes to having that funky shyt that can turn up a house party or family gathering another notch. I've seen Rick's effect on older relatives.

Prince's "Rasperry Beret"

vs.

Rick James "Give it to me Baby"

We agree to disagree.

If your criteria is a certain classic (tenor/agressive ) soul type I can dig it (don't forget bout Donny Hath).

But as a total artist and creative spirit, I'll take Stevie Wonder over Teddy P for that matter. And that's not a diss, got his solo and Harold Melvin stuff in the collection too.

Rasberry Beret is a weak prince example verses one of Rick's biggest hit. I like Rick, he was a badd cat. But its like the difference between good and great.

Rick was good, Prince is great

Purple Rain > than any Rick album!

They're two different sub-genres, Rick James was more funk, Prince was/is more like electronic R&B.

I related more to Morris Day and The Time than Prince with that weirdo shit.

Prince was great........but I think they give a lot of the credit to the wrong person for a lot of stuff. I may be wrong though.

But Prince vs Rick James? I'm a Rick James fan....never was a Prince fan. Women were Prince fans back in them days......how I saw him. How many dudes were really listening to Purple rain? smh.

But Prince had a few jams that stuck with me forever though....so I don't totally trash him. But he ain't no Rick James though.

Rick James music inspired the Cantina Band....that says a lot.

Punk Funk baby!!

O.K..........now Prince can really kiss my ass.

Much better comparison than the Prince vs MJ thread.

IMO, Prince is the most underrated guitarist in history. He gets respect, but not nearly enough. So damn clean, and soulful. I'd only put Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page ahead of him, all-time.

Sorry if this vid has already been posted. Didn't read all 15 pages. Your man comes in around 3:27 and doesn't stop.

^^^^I agree.
..................................................................................................................................

I love that right there.

I also like a lot of the Prince funk influenced stuff through the years.

Used to zone out to this instrumental.

You know Prince wrote most of Morris Day and the Time's shit, right?

Yea he wrote and plays almost everything on most of their records. there are bootlegs with his original vocal demos pre morris. BTW no disrespect to Rick James, who I love, but not even close. Prince did open for Rick James after his 1st record and that tour is famous for Prince's performances not Rick's. Ive heard some really bad rick james in weird periods (I know Prince has some too). Prince is a better guitar player, he's a better keyboard player, and I know for sure he is a better drummer. Too bad they didnt do anything together, that could be the super group from Hell (for the guys in the band and the record label) but they would have had the best drugs and craziest outfits. I dont know about Prince's politics, weirdness, ass free chaps, unicorn riding, etc (thats not really my business) but he is outrageously talented, biaatches...

Prince, only because I know more Prince tracks than I do Rick James, oh and, yeah, I ride a motorcycle.;)

Well damn........learned something new. Thought it was a brainstorm collab....not a Prince calling all shots type of thing.

That "energy" surrounding Prince was what I liked verses the other shit he did....put it that way. That music was from another dimension.

But still Rick James >............because of personal pref. Beethoven would kick Prince's ass on piano........but who have you listened to more? hmmmmmmmm.

More my speed right there........

Shits on anything Prince ever done....

Prince can sit down somewhere after that.......present, past, future.

Damn, old thread not sure how I missed it. My vote's for Prince all day though.

and going back much further

Basie or Ellington or Calloway?

Almost anyone who was a teenager in the early 80's will tell you Prince is the better between the two. Rick was a beast. Don't get me wrong. But, Prince was damn near a force of nature.

Ask yourself this: who was Micheal Jackson afraid of? It sure as hell wasn't Rick James. Mike viewed Prince as his compition. I remember seeing an interview were either MJ, or someone close to him said, Mike would get song ideas and he'd comment on how he needed to develope those ideas before Prince did because their creativity flowed from the same place. Not the exact words but it was something to that effect. I wish I could remember where that interview was or find a link to it.

But, this was MJ at the height of his career saying this. He never publicly said anything close to that about Rick (or anyone else). However, like most black folk, he prolly liked some of his jams. And, I'm sure he respected Rick as an artist. But, there are levels to everything.

Some of ya'll seem to think only low to mid range voices are what real soulfullness is about. Yeah, try telling that to Smokey Robinson or Philip Bailey among others. Princes falseto was getting panties wet world wide. Back in the day his falseto would have your woman wondering what you would look like in skinny jeans, high healed boots and a perm ...lol

And if you want to talk about soulful. Throw on "Do Me Baby." You want Funky? Throw on anything from The Time's first 3 albums. All written, produced and performed by Prince. He brought Morris in later. Then hired the rest of the group after that. And, actually, Alexander O'neil was who Prince originally wanted to front The Time. But, they couldn't come to terms. So, he got Morris. Who was actually a drummer.

BTW, have any of you heard the bass lines for "Let's Work" or "777-9311?" That's Prince playing that shit and it's funky as hell. Oh, and that drum beat from "777-9311", that's Prince banging that shit out. What about them funky ass synths and bass combo "Head?" All Prince. No drum machines, no sequencers and no back up vocalists except the female speaking part.

Remember, Prince played every instrument he put his hands on. And not just played them, but played them well. Dude was totally self taught. They say he never took a lesson. Jimmy Jam said Prince would take your instrument and play it better than you could. And, it wasn't even his main instrument.

Damn near any popular form of music there is, Prince has done it and has charted at least top ten in it. Prince did funky and a whole lot more. He never allowed himself to be limited like many of today's black artists. That's why black music ain't selling like it used to. Shit is a cliche now. A parody of itself. But, what do I know? I haven't had any hits ether.

What I do know is Rick had some timeless jams. And, yes, "Street Songs" is a classic album. But, he just wasn't on the same level as Prince. He was very limited in what he could do. And when that great era of black music played out, so did he.however, Prince just kept it moving. Yeah, he put out some experimental B.S.. That happens when you been in the game as long as he has. But, he also put out some hot joints and continues to do so. Plus, he can still pack stadiums all by himself. No opening act needed. Even at the top of his career, Rick was never able to do that.

Prince wins. Hands down.

It's obvious that Prince would appeal more to mainstream fans but like Snoop said at the Source Awards:

White folks aint got no love for Rick? Where's the diversity in taste. I'm sure there may be one white soul out there who liked funk and soul more. Ask Blacks who's better, you'll get a variety of responses.

my parents were fans of both. They like Rick James... But they love Prince. Something about prince just set them off

I said Prince less because I'm white and more because of my age. Believe me, I have plenty of love for funk. Ask the people who know me. I'm a big Stevie Wonder fan too. Went to see George Clinton live once. But Prince was right in my wheelhouse, whereas I was a little late for the big Funk. Also, some of the biggest funk bands had plenty of white players in them. Tower of Power, for one. But that's a music I had to go out and find on my own - like I said, Prince was a hand-me-down from my brothers, and I could regularly see him on MTV and whatnot. More generational, less racial, imo.
