Ok. Can a real grandpa speak now. I am over 50 yrs old. I just started doing music in about 2004 or therebout. I have always had a love for music though. I grew with Greg Williams of switch and was on speaking terms with B. Debarge before he died. My sister lived with a very good guitar player for 6+ years who played behind people like Al Green before he became famous. And also Jr Walker of Motown fame. Had a cousin who was on the verge of making it as a singer, until she found god. She now sings gospel. I have 2 other cousins who were famous musician(to a degree) who will remain nameless for now. I got into doing music when I got a musicians friend mag from a guy I worked with. Bought my 1st piece of gear from that mag. And been going every since. I don’t care if I make it or not. I do it because I love it. So whats the big deal about age if you love music. Tell me.
PS my 1st cousin also produced the film documentary “THAWESTSIDE” google it.
My golf buddy is also a locally popular musician in Michigan. Plays all over western Michigan.
I do not play live. Only like to make music.

Of course I produce coz I love it, grandpa newuser1, :), but I just want to be able to do it all day. I hate having to squeeze it into the nights, then stop interrupted by my "bed time" (back to being a 7 year old!).

I have respect for you.

Nothing is over until you let someone tell you it's over....I regularly punch the rollercoaster attendants in the mouth and stay in my seat for another turn...

LMAO@ the sight of seeing a dude nodding his head to the G Minor scale while air-piano playing. Whatever works!

How can something be over that never started? (scratches head)

If you have that attitude you probably shouldn't even start making music seriously. A new record to you is a new record to you, it could be 40 years old and you still like it. Are you going to hunt down the producers and hate on 'em because they're older now?

What does an old engineer do? What does an old session player do? What ever they want because their image and age doesn't have to appeal to a certain demographic. What does the old A&R do? Behind the scenes is behind the scenes no matter what you do. There are a lot of "behind the scenes" people that actually get the artist and song to the forefront and they aren't all teenagers.

The owner of the "skrip" club doesn't have to know how to stay on the pole.

... also, if you're worried about that, just get you a puppet. Find a young cousin or nephew and say he made your ish, like a spokesperson or something. Have him use your stage name to drum up bizness from the people his age. Get shady.

.... like those dudes that send friend requests on myspace with pretty women as the avatar... and they always talk about a "certain myspace friends'" music page, lol.

Milli Vanilli your beats if you have to.

hey, if you were 17-18, would you let someone else be the producer in the background and you being the "acting" producer.
I mean, don't you understand. Most of the guys this age have a DAW, talent and are basically a year or two away from replacing Timbo AND Clive Davis.

lol

This is a business, age is not and never will be the currency in business, focus on the real number you need to keep up to par.

you're never to old to be behind the scenes as far as producing and making beats, hot beats can't be denied...now rapping is a young person's game, you're pushing it after 30..you shouldn't be 30+ still tryna get a record deal as a rapper..

It depends on your luck and hard work. Those 2 work together. I would say you're at a disadvantage but it's very possible. I'm 24 and started about 5 months ago. I'm just starting to make music that makes sense and I find myself getting off my chair to dance to my music. I love it.

Ain't nothing over till it's over. I started playing instruments seriously around 22 and I didn't get into production seriously until around 27. I'm 30 now and still going and I work anywhere from 50-70 hours a week. I still hit the woodshed regardless. I sleep about 3-4 hours a night and stay up for 24+ at least once a week. Some weekends I get off work Friday and don't sleep until Sunday night. All the family stuff, practice, Madden, Xbox, Football, coursework, ESPN get's done in there. I don't run around at a frantic pace I just cruise normally through the day, the reason I get more done than other people is when they're sleep I'm still going.

Sleep is for content MF's, if you wanna accomplish great things you best start sacrficing some stuff.

Age is just a number, guys. People care about the music, not the age of the person producing it.

Yeah, you just find a dude that can't make a beat to save his life and tell him you'll give him 25% of every sale he makes for you.

Hell, get a bunch of 'em trying to sell your ish.

... like your beat - street team.

I'm just 17....Am i too young to produce? Lol...See broski it dont matter for ish.....U just might be the next big/old thing! Lol..

Exactly what are you done with?

Anything involving me waiting for a check instead of writing one. And I'm not just saying that. I'm comfortable enough to write one now if the opportunity presents itself. Write enough checks, and you end up owning something someone wants to buy at 10x what you paid...but I'm not waiting on them.

Hi,

I'm 26 and am only now starting to take producing seriously. At the moment, I am NOT producing, but learning music theory. I am hoping that when I get back into producing, I will be able to play what's in my head, instead of settling for what I can just about play, or click and drag in a "piano roll" sequencer.

But with my full time job, relationship over but still spending time together sometimes, talkative mum, somewhat social life, etc, it is going to take me at least another year to get "intermediate". I'm still doing scales and ear-training! I get about 45 mins a weekday to practice and say 7 hours at weekends.

So by the time I have any beats ready, I assume I will be about 28 - 30! Anyone who made it in producing in this style of music was there from their teens - the real successful ones anyway.

I read here that Quincy made Thriller at 50, but he didn't START OUT at that age, I'm sure.

So is the dream dead after your mid20s?
Who is the oldest producer who "made it"?
What age are you and at what stage are you in producing?

I don't think the dream is dead mid 20's
im 25 started producing 4-5 years ago

I actually started getting paid for it the same within year I started. I knocked off tracks I liked that's how I learned.

I dont know music theory... never been trained on anything but I've always had a knack for networking and figuring things out. Short cuts and chord books have been my friend.

I can honestly say on average I spent 2-3 hours a day atleast studying other peoples work/remaking tracks and learning how to work with what I had.

Right now I mostly do jingle and sound designing type work pays good imo every now and again I may do some local work or get something over to a label.

What it really boils down to is how you practice. I mean there are people messing with software these days and making good sounding music (original or not) in a year and actually getting the **** placed.

My only advice is do you and find someone that supports you. Some say you cant be in a relationship and do music. You just have to find the right person and learn to take advantage of your time. Me personally I had to find a person that was an artist (drawing, painting etc)

You just gotta manage your time and use it wisely and its not always easy. Surround yourself with successful people or people that have the same passion that always makes things easier.

Oh and for the love of god don't just limit yourself to just hiphop production soo many other genres pay and i mean well

Take a look at the what alot of these unpopular overseas people get paid for making J pop vs Hiphop music its insane
