Is it OVER after 30?

sorry bruv, just being honest.

I will tell you that success breeds success so try to meet people that are hot and talented and are wanting the exact same thing you want, and collaborate. Learn everythng you can, do remixes, whore yourself out on the internet as much as possible... burn cd's and give them away at parties, do anything you can do to get your name out there. But it all comes down to your material...

My advice would be to give up the hopes of ever being a professional in the music industry and just do what makes you happy. These days with everyone having pirated music software and all these dime-a-dozen wack producers, you can't even GIVE a beat away.. several years ago it was easy to sell tracks but these days digital recording and computer-based production are easily obtained by nearly anyone. now it comes down to talent and originality.

The only person out of all of them that has had any sort of real success has done so because he's a naturally very talented individual in all forms of art and creation, and he also LIVES music... when he isn't working on a track he's playing shows or organizing a party or record shopping or networking..

That's called having a REAL PASSION, and a LIFE LONG LOVE for something.

That's what separates the people who just "like" music, from the people who have a PASSION for it.

Most of the people who say they have a passion for it, really only just like it alot.

I LIKE basketball, and would love to play in the NBA...but I don't have the passion that would get me there.

I'M GONNA GET MY HAIR BACK NEXT YEAR!!!!!

AND IT'S GONNA BE CURLY!!!!

:victory:

I'll be 34 on Saturday and as far as "getting my foot in the door" as far as getting placements and whatnot, I'm hitting my stride now.

As far as the production aspect, it's not over until you want it to be. As long as you don't start to sound dated, there will always be people checking for you.

That's the hard part. Most people stick with what was popular when they were in the in crowd.

If they go with what's going on, they see themselves as selling out or something like that.

No because even if I'm not signed I'ma still school these new and old haters. And by then sh*T I should be a King by then. Millions of records, hollywood break ups, rumors, sold out arenas, historial award show performances. Let me stop...lol

I agree with you, but the guy I'm talking about is some sort of prodigy.. he wanted to get into graffiti art and within a year his was so dope you couldn't even believe it, then all of the sudden he decided he wanted to get into DJ'ing. I sold him some 1200's and a mixer and in LESS THAN 1 YEAR he was winning battles. He also started producing (in Acid lol) and was making beats for a lot of people that I won't mention here. He got bored with hiphop and has been producing/dj'ing electro and disco-house type stuff and he just got signed to Ultra for a couple 12" singles and a bunch of remix work... he's a rare exception. I've never met anybody that had as much natural talent as this guy.

I've known people who are excellent musicians who have been playing since they were in the young teens, and they haven't gotten anywhere.

Personally I'd love to be able to work on music 10 hours a day... but I can't. I realized that there's no money to be made in DJ'ing or marketing my music so I got my ass in college... Having a stable, decent job is more important than chasing a dream right now. when i get out of school I'm going to work on music a lot more seriously but for now I just don't have the time. I am looking at my MPC right now - i think it's crying softly..

7:00 net/email/these minutes just disappear
7.30ish dinner
8.15 youtube? I dont quite know! (at this point I am amazed that I let this time escape. It's a valuable extra hour!)
9.00 music (with interruptions from mum, ex-gf, msn, adhd-style net surfing, forum-refreshing, setting up ipod, getting new music, etc.. Man, I am actually shocked at this. I do however talk a lot to my msner who feels the same as I do about music, show him my ideas, ask him for producing tips, talk production, slate today's music, etc)
10.30 get ready for bed, do whatever necessaries, tasks, etc (this time floats away too)
11.15 girlfriend on phone
11:45 try to get gf off phone
12:00 sleep

1. Tell your ex-gf that she's your ex and should find someone else to listen to her.
2. Don't connect to internet.

Thanks. Even then, 4 hours is just enough time for me to get in the zone. Plus, its not a straight 4 hours, coz I gotta eat, do necessaries, prep for the next day, etc.

I don't need a gangsterizer, or masterizer, but something to stretch out evenings would be great.

we are in 2010 bro...Internet ain't optional

what u need is discipline, like a martial artist would have

I'm a Linux admin. :-)

Sleep is one of those things u gotta sacrafice!!

Wooo. sudo respect lol. That's awesome. Linux 4ever =) And yeah.. sleep is a luxury when you got a day job and rec sessions booked for the week right? It's surprising how much time you end up on the phone and booking and planning once things get busier. I haven't made an instrumental in months. I've been recording and mixing my artists and getting them live shows.

As for the original poster, I say do it if you love it. If you love it, you'll invest many more hours per day than you think, and when that's over, you'll invest many brain cpu cycles on the details. Hell, you can rest at your day job.

So it ain't over after thirty, but just make sure you keep your bills paid.

Hi,

I'm 26 and am only now starting to take producing seriously. At the moment, I am NOT producing, but learning music theory. I am hoping that when I get back into producing, I will be able to play what's in my head, instead of settling for what I can just about play, or click and drag in a "piano roll" sequencer.

But with my full time job, relationship over but still spending time together sometimes, talkative mum, somewhat social life, etc, it is going to take me at least another year to get "intermediate". I'm still doing scales and ear-training! I get about 45 mins a weekday to practice and say 7 hours at weekends.

So by the time I have any beats ready, I assume I will be about 28 - 30! Anyone who made it in producing in this style of music was there from their teens - the real successful ones anyway.

I read here that Quincy made Thriller at 50, but he didn't START OUT at that age, I'm sure.

So is the dream dead after your mid20s?
Who is the oldest producer who "made it"?
What age are you and at what stage are you in producing?

Who told you 30 was the limit??? I know some rappers that got in the game at 26 and are on top 10 years later. Thats some bull for these new age microwave wannabe rappers. They in it for the commercial success not the luv of music, so to them 30 is over. If you love making music its never over?

You have a real age and a calendar age.

Which one you roll by is the one that determines if you sit in the house and watch CNN or if you listen to CNN...

Over your head probably...

Internationalize that for the non-USA people?

(OK, CNN International exists, but, I "grew" out of that in the 90s. I no longer have time to hear world news, only a roundup of stuff that affects my hood.)
