It's not just about skill, sometimes you might not have the wisdom, vision or knowhow to make a real move til you get in your 30's... I was like 32 when I released my first commercial project (Westcoast Resurrected)... 5 kids can really put the breaks on sh!t...

Just Blaze said that he used to intern at a studio all day, then work on tracks for hours, go home, sleep 3-4 hours, and do that for 2 or 3 years.

I can't imagine that he's not exaggerating, but yeah, I imagine that if you wanna get on you're gonna need to put in that type of work.

The dream dies the moment you get with a drem killing b*tch, as long as you know what you want and go for it and dont get with any of the haters, and so-called realists... the ones that say sh!t like only 1 in a million producers make it big... or is there really any money in that???... or my all-time favorite... you're so much better at (insert skill here (for me it was computers and programming))... so in short the "dream" never dies... and if it does then it wasn't truly your dream after all...

You would be presently surprised at how many artist in Hip-Hop and R&B are 30+. Don't let the lifestyle fool you.

I wake at 7...get to work at 9. Work until 6. Get home
about 630. Eat, chill, start music about 7-8pm. Going until about 2-3am. May take about 30 minutes in breaks/phone time in there.

That's been my life, Monday - Friday for about 6 years now. Weekends are a mix of music and personal life / relaxation.

I just turned 30. Been doing this since 15 semi-professionally with everything from major placements to movie scores to record deals. And yes, it's over for me. I'm done.

365.25 days in a year
24 hours in a day

=

8766 hours in a year

8 hours per song

52 songs a year

that's not even 5% of your time

work smart

age ain't a thing, it's a state of mind (I've been 26 since I was 16 LOL)

You are DEEP! Can I ask what you work in/as, coz if it's IN MUSIC, then that kinda helps you stay "inspired" and "in the musical vibe" all day long. I work in software, but at least I get to listen to my headphones. I listen to scales at the moment, with my voice over each note saying the note, so I know what I;m hearing. Work takes up too many hours, but it will pay for the new hardware/monitors/etc.

It's already 7.15pm, so I better get on it. I got to get all my music and software back after a reformat (virus!), and my external harddrive is suddenly "offline" with a (7 month old) backup of some of my ****. I gotta try and get it working, but that will jus take up time that I could be spending on music theory, which is my man goal at the moment. Anyway, enough typing, more doing.

You are SERIOUS J Troup. 2-3am sleep? I would be falling over.

I'm a Linux admin. :-)

if you can get 15-30 min of your time during a day to chill (be it some nice short nap or meditation), you can work with 6 hours of sleep and never be tired.

look at bodybuilders. they don't work out 12 hours a day, even if they could. "quality time" over pure "brute force".

and I'm over 30, like Grandpa Troup. lol

I used to take a nap in my lunch hour at work. My boss said: "You can't do that anymore".

And if I go to bed at 1 or 2am, I find I have to get up regular to make coffee, or go stand in the toilet, leaning against a wall for 30secs shut-eye just to stop them from stinging. So yeh, if I could nap, I'd be good.

J Troup, you really made me see that I wasn't dedicated enough. Thanks. This post made me see the hours I was spending (wasting) on preriferal (sp) stuff like getting more music (inspiration) from youtube, torrents, talking about music on msn, etc.

BACK TO IT.

Oh and JeanLukPigheart, thanks. I referred to your post in my above post.

In response to the original question: Is it over after 30?

For me, Its just begun @ 30! L0L!!

.....2009 has been a great year for me. I've placed the most EVER this year. A bunch of indies I'm workin with are starting to take off, and I have a lot of interest in my direction because I NOW make solid compositions (or so I'm told).

I'm 31 and I've been making music since 1997 and decided to pursue it professionally 2 years ago.

I did have to put in WORK to make it happen though. I had to get out and get in peoples face and MEET PEOPLE IN PERSON and make myself known to the people who mattered. The music business is def about relationships and being easy to work with. <====This ensures retention.

Just keep in mind, as with any business some get lucky and slide into the business smoothly, A LOT are the product of nepotism, and some unfortunately never make it. Talented or not.

:)

I admire all you dreamers. I used to be the same way.

Remember though, being in the music bizz can be a blessing AND a curse.

Yep, its too late for you dont even think about it, you have no chance.

Man if you love muzik you'll never stop period. Not for nothing but waaaaayyyy to many of you beat makers think that you drop a couple of tracks and your rich. The Music Industry as a business is done. People will always want to hear music you just have to figure out other ways to make income. If you think your going to just sell tracks and get rich you need to start reading and really know what type of business you are getting into. I will always create until I am no longer. I do it for the love and I am structuring a business around it however I also have many other forms of Income. If you live in the US make sure to structure your life that way. If your asking if an AGE is a problem then you don't have a love for the Music. Great Music doesn't have an Age never forget that.....Purple Airlines "Where we like that FLY Muzik"

LOL!

After reading your post, I thought: "lemme click this troll's soundclick page, he's probably ****. That's why he's acting like a little fúcker!"

Then I heard "Up On Me". That was TIGHT. And you have nearly 300 songs. **** dude. And you appear to know music theory or how to play piano, or is someone playing for you? Instead of acting like a little..., you could be dropping tips and telling us how you got to the level you're at. How old are you? Up on Me was compressed as HELL, but sounded good!

The rest of your songs on the front page sound Ne-Yoish, and like anything on radio in 2009, but the Up On Me stood out to me.

Good ****.

Now quit being an arse. :)
