I actually used to have that desk. Its a nice desk. The only issues I had with it were the speaker placement (not ear level) and the fact that I couldn't get my dual 19" LCD's on it the way that I wanted (I see you have a similar issue)

i've been to a couple of really high-end studios where they're using a big old analog console with protools TDM.

so:
when they move faders on the console...they KNOW it's not gonna move the sliders, knobs, etc., on the pro tools screen.

so then why don't they just get consoles that are made to control pro tools? i mean...aren't u just gonna have to keep on adjusting sliders with ure mouse anyways?

i'm assuming because going through a neve console is gonna sound pretty awesome, right?

is THAT why they use those boards even though they know it won't control pro tools?

A lot (a LOT) of studios simply use PT (or whatever else) as a recording medium and simply as a substitute for a tape deck. You can't beat digital editing with a stick. But in most blind tests (analog vs. digital summing), the preferred version is the analog sum.

also, if someone has an awesome console with automated faders and stuff, would it be wise to do ure fades on the board and save it?

OR...is it better to not touch the faders on the board and do it on PT instead?

cuz i remember at this one studio i was at....the engineer hardly touched the faders on the board. he did it on the computer (PT).

OR...

would EITHER way be alright?

I wasn't referring to Digi controllers that *look* like consoles - I'm talking about simply using PT (or any other recorder) as a "dumb" hard-disk unit and using the console like everyone else uses a console.

In any case, there are three completely different schools of thought -

(1) Sum in digital (such as with a Icon or really any digital console).

(2) Mix in digital / sum in analog (with an analog console or summing buss).

(3) Mix in analog (with a traditional analog console).

Whichever works for person (A) might not be the best for person (B).

do i do my mixing on the board and not touch the faders on protools...

OR

do i not touch the faders on the board and mix in protools?


i mean....for people that have this type of setup...do you know how's it's more generally done?

cuz personally, i'd rather do all my mixing on the actual board.
it just seems a lot more natural to me. the fades and everything will feel a lot more human.
but after seeing a professional do the mixing on protools instead...it really threw me off :-/

i was just bringing them up cuz i wanted to see if there are consoles that control pro tools that AREN'T made by digidesign

i always hear about mixing in the analog realm but editing in digital how does that work? do the boards have multiple outputs to send to the pc or is it recorded directly to the pc and then sent to the mixer. Ive always wondered

And yes, I would imagine there are dozens of controllers that control ProTools - But THOSE ARE NOT CONSOLES. Those are controllers. They look like consoles. They give a "console feel" to mixing. They are NOT doing the mixing.

i dont have any experience in these things really. ive edited 1/4" tape and ive used it in radio production and some very basic music production mainly as a source for a mixed down recording but most of my experience is doing it all on software so this is all foreign to me. ill google it

These are all pictures pre wiring and before it's completely finished. The tabletop rack will be filled soon, I will have another monitor just like the one for my Quicksilver running on my Mv8800 and of course... my XBox 360 will be finally set-up again.
