Dual G4 800mhz, 768Mb RAM, 80 Gig drive (installing another 120 gig drive), just installed a Superdrive works like a charm, 250mb internal Zip drive. I just got it off of eBay for $270. Dual monitor support, runs Live like a dream and handles more than enough work than what I need it to in my studio. My Mv8800 takes a lot of pressure off of my DAW. =]

Now mind you I had a Mirrored Door Dual 1ghz with a half a terrabyte of HD space, 1.5 gigs of ram and all the works... only problem. I was getting the famed Kernel Error messages! I worked for hours on the damn thing. Still was getting them. I got so fed up that I sold the damn thing... best part though is that I got it for such a good deal that I actually made $100 on it.

Anyway, what I am getting at is if the Quicksilver you were offered is SOLID... then go for it. Even if you use it to run a standalone softsynth, it's still worth it. If it's got the right specs though, it can handle quite a bit of serious audio work without maxing it out. Plus, I leave mine on for months at a time without a problem. Once you get a solid Mac... they usually stay solid for years and years. Just give it a proper run through before purchasing. Plus, they look so damn sexy even still 'till this day.

hey guys...i had a question:

i've been to a couple of really high-end studios where they're using a big old analog console with protools TDM.

so:
when they move faders on the console...they KNOW it's not gonna move the sliders, knobs, etc., on the pro tools screen.

so then why don't they just get consoles that are made to control pro tools? i mean...aren't u just gonna have to keep on adjusting sliders with ure mouse anyways?

i'm assuming because going through a neve console is gonna sound pretty awesome, right?

is THAT why they use those boards even though they know it won't control pro tools?

let me know...it's been buggin' me!
:-/

just going to pop in here for my .02, since i guess it's my console...

i lot of automation can be done manually, like your basic fade in fade outs. there's no need to go to the digital realm for that - but for more complex stuff, _that's_ the only time that i use the mixer in my DAW (which is DP and not PT, incidentally).

everything else you all were talking about is spot on - though don't forget that a console is a _lot_ more than analog summing - it's the center of your studio. i can sit at that thing, and with a press of a few buttons and maybe a couple patch cords, i can route audio all over the room at whatever level i desire. it's a huge time saver.

k k k did a session this last couple weeks, took some pictures near the beginning:

artist's setup and mic and whatnot was in the other room - the mic by the console there i just used for some vocoding and light heavily processed vocal tracks.

tambourine, also, i think.

only when i record rhodes or loud guitar amps in the courtyard. i run a 50 foot 8 channel snake from my console downstairs into the courtard.

the people usually come out to the balcony to see what's going on, but usually people think it's pretty cool! i need to take a picture of that.
