I have been wondering this for a while and why do people use the older versions of FL Studio when you get free updates?

Many times, the new features are not something you care about. I actually don't use any features past FL 4, really.

why use fl atoll!. hmm its maybe because they downloaded it illegally and don't get the upgrades or they were to lazy to register and dont get the upgrades that way either.

Unless there's a huge upgrade/update why??? Normally there's going to be bugs in the newer software most of the time. I still use Acid 4 eventhough I have Acid 6. I still use FL Studio 6.0.4 eventhough FL 7 has been out. Edison and the new EQ didn't do much for me ... FL 7 seems to crash where as my version is like a rock. Also, there are some features that change in certain things that older FL user love ... FL 4's "fit" sample is a good example. Most people who use it love to be able to stretch just by using the "fit" option (don't know why but they do). I know people who still use ProTools 5.1 and the digi001 because they've mastered it inside out ... if it ain't broke don't fix it!

For all the reason above, and also because alot of people have the bootleg version so they can't upgrade.

I have a valid version of FL and I still use FL6. I do have FL7 installed, but never use it. I still have FL5 install on the same machine.

becuase im stuck on fl5, i dont use anyfl plugins anymore, i rewire reason and use the fls slicer and wave mapper, and thats it!! The new ones just dont apply to me, i can actually have fl7 delivered to me for free and i just dont want it

if you're good at working with what you got, why would you go and pay who knows how much on other stuff, if you didnt really need it in the past why do you need it now...

if i got the Avalon mic pre (which is like studio standard, top of the line) why would go and buy the Avalon 2 for 3 or 4 g's, just because it came out, (which it didnt)

its money to be made and thats what these musicians friend and guitar center stores are doing making you pay for more than what you need,

people also do it with the mpc, soon its gonna be a 5000 a 6000 and a 7000, and people are gonna be all over it spendin that money cause they dont know anybetter

Thats what i think, and its just an opinion people so dont cry, piss, poot, and moan

if you dont know you'll fall for anything

That's the correct answer 99.9% of the time.

honestly if i HAD TO id rather use FL 4 or 5. they where solid and for soem reason their midi recording was great (though they STILL dont have quantize while recording :S) if ur using vsts and other stuff then WHY would u upgrade and get a whole wack of crap u dont need taking up more cpu and ram? makes no sence to me.

more then likely once reason 4 is out i dont totaly see myself upgrading anymore.

Good point, but the older versions of FL don't have as much automation ability as FL 7, granted FL 6 was very close, but 5 and 4 just don't compare.

Oh, man. Me neither. That damn "FIT" option. it's still there just not as digits, but as a knob.
On the whole: "I don't need the newest version" issue (besides people using warezed stuff):
People tend to see software updates too much like buying new hardware while it's not. It's software.
Companies like Steinberg or Propellerheads or most of the "big ones" tend to use that model.
One of the reasons why that stuff is so expensive, too. They need to provide support for every freaking version they ever released, and the company needs (on paper) to provide it.
Imagelines policy is different. If you use FL5 and find a bug, it will most probably be adressed in a newer version. You just get asked to update the latest version and there you go.
IF FL7 (which btw still is in [public]beta stage) has bugs, report it, it will be fixed. Update to a new version. voilá.
If you buy Cubase for example, you buy a certain version. That's *your* Cubase. If you think a new version has a feature worth upgrading there, you can buy it if you want. If the version you have is discontinued, well.... bad luck.
Buying FL means you buy FL. FL6, 7, 8, 9, 10,.... So there's actually no means whatsoever to stick to an older version IMO.

Not really. If you got it illegally, you also know where to get the latest version illegally. In that case, you still get the updates, just not legitimately.

Aside from that, it's because some people just don't feel compelled to upgrade. I'm still using FL6, and it took me forever to get to upgrading because I was happy with 5. The upgrade from 4 to 4.52 was almost instant 'cause there was a lot I wanted out of FL that I could have with the upgrade, but going to 5 took forever.

That age old adage of "If it ain't broke..." is what most people apply to FL. They like a particular version, so they keep that one unless there's some compelling reason to upgrade.

Someone put it like this, can't remember who.

FL is like an instrument. Imagine if you had a guitar and you have played hundreds of gigs with it, and it has never let you down, why would you want to change it?

You still need to change its strings once a while or wax / paint the body if it starts to look shabby... and so on. That's somewhat the nature of updating to new versions. ;)

it always gets better to me. only reason why someone would keep using an older version is simply being 'stuck in their ways' i guess. or dont fully use FL, just a couple parts of it and dont need to upgrade.

Yeah past version 4 or so the only thing i have really needed is edison (v7) and the new parametric eq in v7 as well.

I love using 5 and I agree with most of the posts... Funniest thing my boi still uses 2.54 and told me he's so comfortable using it becuse the upgrade very changes alot of the small features you dont think about like the solo feature changed from just right clicking a channel which I did like and the whole just right clikcing on a sample in a browser brought it to a channel, i liked that feature and that all changed by 4 but im a fan of 5 cause of its midi capabilities. Everyone loves thier comfort zone.

I agree with Fam Nice. Ok I've got Acid Pro 4.0 & I had FL sometime ago. Well my mom came in & wiped out my computers memory, so FL got ripped. I didn't even have my registration numbers. I emailed them 7/31 & they had everything on file. I down load it. Now because of the newer version, I'ma have to update my Soundblaster card to record samples from my old Sears LXI turntable because the new FL 7 version won't work. The FL 4 version, I had no problem & had the same configuration. Also sometimes you've learned a particular thing so well, you will not accept change. You'll stay the same. Now I have to get a new sound card.

You know that you can report bugs to Imageline in their support forums, don't you? And they're pretty fast at responding and fixing things actually.
