Preventing Artist from Stealing Beats

Yea i mean im getting some income but its nothing like it used to be even though Im way better than I use to be, guys just snatching beats like its nothin though, not mine any more, until one of my personal projects blow up Im gonna be finding ways to protect my music on the internet, Im wondering how people will handle me puttin the beep in there too but at some point I cant care too much, soundclick will be my 3rd income source, and since i know how profitable it could be I feel like its worth some money and effort to try a few new approaches.

^^ word

a lot of niggas i done spoke to . . . make it seem as if the "glory days" of SC are over with. SuperstarO just built an original site like a week ago, lol

a few niggas thats on the MyFlashStore.net "Highest Paid Producers" tab . . . have their own domains, shit's something to think about. but the traffic on SC is godly, especially if ISK tombout 7k plays a day.

I know people are going to give me hell for this... but let them steal your beats... copyright your shit officially first... you can copyright multiple songs at a once for a flat rate... dont upload beats then try to protect them... protect then upload... more info here U.S. Copyright Office and here...How to Copyright a Song: 3 Methods - wikiHow

But in actuality you dont have to do this, as soon as you put your work into a tangible media, such as a CD or sheet music you officially own the copyright...

Ive gotten 30,000 plus plays per day when Im in the top 10, the traffic is amazing and thats the main reason Im even still interested, generating that kind of traffic by yourself with a brand new domain would be extremely difficult but its still definitely something every producer should try doing, Im having one built just because it eliminates competition, no free downloads needed, all the focus is on you and its a little more professional than having just a soundclick page. Plus you can put samples, songs, drum kits, videos, artist profiles ect there and handle things more like a well rounded music business than just a beat maker on soundclick, plus you can link all your third party sites like, reverbnation, twitter, facebook, youtube, soundcloud, and whatever new site that takes over next.

and @beatcomp Im not worried about artists stealing it and blowing up cause of course you can sue them if they blow up. Im more concerned that people who buy leases see other guys not buying it but still making songs and selling them. So people who would normally purchase leases will feel like they are wasting their money since its becoming acceptable to rap over tagged beats. Which is why less and less people dont care about removing tags. Thats why Im adding beeps, or noise, or silence to my fee downloads because those things have not become acceptable and I dont suspect they will since they dont sound good, no radio station or consumer will want to hear them like that. Free downloads were meant for artists to demo songs with, then they changed to allow for promo only on soundclick and myspace, then for promo only online, now they are allowed to be promoted everywhere and artists still take advantage of producers who allow them so much for free that they even sell songs now and wont even cop a lease. Its a shame but Ive met so many soft spoken producers its no wonder we as a group are getting taken advantage of, some of us gonna have to step up and start protecting our interests and once enough of us do we will all benefit

+1

I copyright all my shit, it's only 35.00 and you can do it in bulk. I don't even post new shit online, even for feedback unless I already handled that.

my revelation was when some sampling niggas was samplin some tracks of mine that I composed 100% . . . it wasn't exactly a "beat theft", nigga just genuinely thought I had looped the entire track myself.

pretty much. I think the actual consumers on SC are spoiled to be honest. they got so much shit to choose from and spend their 0.99(lol) on that they're more stingy with it then they probably would've been if they were just coming to your personally. I see people like ALLROUNDA with his own domain with a non-exclusive set for $39.99 . . . selling like a 100 beats every 7-30 days. making old ass 1990 Nas/Lord Infamous type joints too.

you have a copyright as soon as it's tangible but your copyright needs to be registered with the Library of Congress and that's where your protection and proof of ownership lies

so very good advice at the beginning
if ppl go out their way to steal your instrumentals let them have it
most of them will only play their songs in the car,for friends and family
hopefully you'll get a sales lead from it (promotion)
if you tag throughout the beat
(that's your backup along with registering your copyright)
I only plan to use sounclick to showcase my instrumentals and use it for the built in traffic random traffic
and
I'll use targeted/strategic methods to get traffic to my own site where
Myflashstoreplayer widget will be there
for those potential customers to view and to buy..
even those that come to my soundclick page will be redirected to my website
to buy from the myflashstoreplayer widget embedded on my site
so I get visitor hits and
get a chance to advertise my other services to instrumental seekers in great detail
that I be brief about on my soundclick page
have a simple Soundclick design and funnel sales and traffic from sounclick to me
use Soundclick because
$120 for VIP
I'm going to take advantage of all I can from that paid service
which is mostly centered Soundclick around their traffic (I see it as random traffic I really don't plan on paying for Sounclick promotion)
I rather use free promotion and markerting techniques including facebook ad campaign
along with just networking and being social about me personally and what kind of business I run
using face to face, over the phone, skype, and other internet tools to connect with artists directly and personally.

I can hear ya'll now what's up with all the bold words lol..

I just thought I share some things you should be focusing on instead worry about ppl stealing(you can't stop that, that's techn. now)

I see if you sold actually physical items because once they are stolen they are gone
but most likely your sales are from lease purchases which you can sale over and over...never having to buy more inventory
and most here enjoy making beats so you have plenty of music to upload and build income from

I like your simply Soundclick design and it has just a listen style to it with the animated hea

Thanks man I appreciate it, I just changed it recently, it was more striking, red, black, my picture, ect but I figured this one is more professional. I havent had it long enough to really notice a big difference but i'll see know soon enough if it was worth it.

You can't take them to court unless you have your work REGISTERED though. If you don't the judge is gonna throw your case out. Alot of people don't understand that. Registering your copyright with the copyright office is the only way to PROVE your ownership in court.

What if somebody takes your beat and copyrights it before you do?

... then they say you remade their beat.

Who wins?

Most beatmakers don't have good housekeeping like that to keep all of the files anyway.

I think you would be shit outta luck bruh.

The importance of getting your material properly registered can't be overstated enough.

you have to be about music and MUSIC-BUSINESS or just music

organization methods should be used every week at least and have
firm organizational structure on how you store your instrumentals
I use several methods and teach them to my clients
stuff I learned from organization professionals

iight.. i know exactly what your saying.. and i suggest that when you place your tags on the beat.. place them right when the verse/intro stops and the hook begins.. place them that way.. so that even if they try to cut out any part.. part of the tag is still there.. so they will not go through all that trouble. cuz it will take more work.. ..
if you are selling your beats online.. i would suggest.. you use www myflashstore net the way they made the site.. it will either have your personal tag throught out the beat, or they issue you a standard tag.. for the site.. so your beats will always be protected..

if you dont want to use that service.. be sure to just place your tags through out the beat in places that it will definitely be hard to take out.. period...

I hope this helps..
