I give you these TEN "NEWBIE" COMMANDMENTS

Nice! I'd add to the knowledge section to learn about copyrights quick before you post (if you care about someone stealing your beats). People are going to do it, and especially if your beats are tight, then you have a really good chance of being ripped off. So just keep that in mind before you expose your instrumentals to the world... do copyrights maybe once a month, costing you $45 each time, and say it takes 3 years to get that 1 big hit, by that point it would have costed you only$1600 to protect what is now making you a million bucks... so if this is more than a hobby to you, it's well worth it.

nice read big brother !

I think the two most important ones are
Thou Shalt “READ THY MANUALS”
Thou Shalt “RESEARCH THY GEAR BEFORE BUYING”

the two i probably do the most and will always do are
Thou Shalt “CONTINUALLY SEEK KNOWLEDGE”
Thou Shalt “REMAIN HUMBLE”

Yea, this is a good post. Now if we can just get the newbs to read it...
LevLove

Hey guys, I just read it!!!!!!! lol

Thanks for the advice!

This is an extremely useful post. This is the first post I have read in this forum and I am impressed. I am admittedly a newbie. I am so new that I don't even have equipment, no music making computer programs, & don't know the first thing about constructing a beat. I'm just gathering info and researching. Thanks!

i am experienced and checked back here in 'getting started' for the hell of it and all i can say is that that's genius

[/list]During the production process, do you rely on your monitors alone? Or do you use headphones at a minimum level?
i use oth because headphones pick up different frequencies

this is a really solid post. im new to the scene and this is a first for me to read. i do have one question tho to all the seasoned producers. Alot of people, ive seen, talk about "take this seriously" and "its more than a hobby" and "dont pretend to do this, be real". my question to yall is after saying all that, do you feel like making the commitment to learn all the techniques, reading the manuals, and spending all the time into this, worth it?

Thou Shalt not make it so obvious that you're not using torrented software!!

Seriously. I have only just come here from hearing about this place elsewhere..
I cant believe how many newbs are here , who dont know crap.. And they make it so obvious that they use torrents... "Should I get Nuendo or Cubase"
hmm.

By helping others we help ourselves. Do it on your own if you can, don't be afraid to ask for help. Never lie to yourself. This thing is both technical *skill based* and personal *life based*! Work on yourself inside and out. Go for a run. Call up your shorty, love her fully. Study like you're taking a million dollar test; better get those questions right my man. Life is short, don't waste the time you were granted. Put it down. Turn it up (DONT HURT YOUR EARS). This is a lifestyle, this is how I provide for my family. This is how I bring beauty into the world. Music is an outlet for your input to society. You can make people laugh, cry, remember the good times, fight, stand up, and believe. It's more than a metrenome, it's more than a video, it's your life. What could be more powerful than that? What could be more rewarding than helping others spread that same love. Much respect to those who believe in finding a better way and strive to improve at everything they choose to do not only for themeselves, but for all. And i say choose because there is always a choice. Make the right one. Listen learn contribute. Be.

Thanks for writing these commandments, and for all of you who posted offering your insight.

Peace

The only person to whom you can direct this question and expect to receive a useful answer is yourself. For myself, I've been a musician for as long as I can remember, and a professional musician/producer/teacher for about 26 years. Am I rich? No. Have I had a good life? Oh, yes!!!

Was it good for you? Only you can answer that. Just like sex.

I would add to this thus:

There is no such thing as a stupid question. There is, however, someone stupid enough to ask the question that's already been answered. use the forum search facility. Keep your search terms as short and specific as possible. If you struggle, ask!

We were all newbs once.

Hey guys, I'm Kev. New here, those are from pretty good rules to follow. Wish I had known some of those when I was starting out. Well live and learn right? LOL.
