I give you these TEN "NEWBIE" COMMANDMENTS

 • Thread starter Thread starter BigBrotherMotown
 • Start date Start date
Knew there was something I meant to add to this.

Punctuate your posts. There's nothing more irritating than trying to make sense of unpunctuated posts to try to work out exactly what question the poster is trying to get answered. I always skip over unpunctuated posts, because my time is too valuable to waste on a futile exercise. Be clear in your posts. We're not looking for Pulitzer material or artistic brilliance, but it helps us to help you if your posts make sense.

can u fwd me the rest of that quote in your sig.? I have been trying to make my kits harder because all I have are the ones on my triton and they aren't too bueno. I want to experiment with them instead of dL'ing some wack ass kit. with a bunch of one shots. Is that ok?

EDIT:: Ok so I just posted this from my phone and I thought it would go straight to breal. sorry guys, i'll take it down when I get home from work.

Hey im deffinetly one of the newbs that this thread was aimed at. just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on some recording gear. Im looking just for something cheap to use with my computer (preferably not to much over 500), i would be using electric and acoustic guitars and maybe bass. also was curious to whether recording via P.C can damage the sound card and whether i should buy a preamplifier or if it were even possible to buy a small console (8 channels or less) and still use my computer for recording. Any advice/constructive criticsm would be a great help.
cheers

This is not the place for this. Look around the forum before you post, and you'll see that there is a place for just about everything. Checl out some threads, too. I'm sure there was something in the opening post of this thread that talked about searching.

Hey BigBrother, much much respect and love!!

 • Thou Shalt “PROTECT THY EARS" (HEARING)
I see a lot of people doing STUPID stuff to their ears all the time. Understand this…YOUR EARS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF EQUIPMENT YOU HAVE! You HAVE TO take care of your hearing in order to do your job well. I know you like to BLAST those headphones when you are working out. Well guess what? You are going to have to give up a lot of the BAD HABBITS that you have learned over the years. No more “Rumbling” down the street with that brand new 1000 watt stereo ALL THE WAY UP in you new pimped out ride. No more playing Splinter Cell on X-BOX with the surround sound MAXED OUT. You have to use common sense. I Personally would MUCH RATHER lose my sight than lose my hearing. Without your ears there would be no music business! Let me repeat that….WITHOUT YOUR EARS THERE WOULD BE NO NEED FOR A MUSIC INDUSTRY BECAUSE THERE WOULD BE NO MUSIC……..Only Silence..

Great post. I wish I had been a little more open to information like this when I was first getting involved with producing and DJ'ing. The above noted point really hits home for me. I'm 32 years old, and I have had pretty serious tinnitus for about five years now. I actually wasn't one of those people who used to blast my car stereo or max my headphones out, it just happened that I was born with extremely sensitive hearing, and my exposure to the decibel levels took a toll on my eardrums.
Tinnitus is something that you CAN mange your life with, but it has been one of the most difficult things that I have ever had to do. The constant ringing is absolutely debilitating the first few years, and the psychological headgames that you go through because of it are pretty torturous. If you are being exposed to excessive decibel levels and your ears are sending you warnming signals, do not ignore them. Invest in some high-end molded plugs (I have the ER-15's which are great). It will be one of the best investments you ever make. Hearing damage=cell damage and it is irreversible within the scope of modern medicine.
Be Smart. PROTECT YOUR HEARING!

[/LIST]During the production process, do you rely on your monitors alone? Or do you use headphones at a minimum level?
Not that I want to be funny or stupid. But, I never ever seen any recording engineer / producer, wearing headphones in the studio when they are behind the mixing console. I don't know but, it's just me. So, my answer to your question is; RELY ON YOUR MONITORS ALWAYS. That's why you bought them for.

Thanks, BBM. I am most definitely a noob and I very much appreciate the guidance!

I'm a newbie, I read it, I also copied it down on paper so I remember every one. It all makes perfect sense, I probably never would have taken the time otherwise to do all that stuff. Thanks :)

I think the most important are stay humble, read manuals, and research equipment
