You're not entitled to anything that you sign away.
It goes like this....
Label - "We'll use your song as a single, but we want 100% of your publishing. If you don't agree, we'll give this $2500 check to a producer who will agree. So either take this check and get on the album, or don't. Your choice."
Rookie Producer - "Okay. Where do I sign?"
It's that simple.
Just because you get a check, doesn't mean you HAVE to get your publishing.
Like D. Wells said, it's about leverage at that point. You gotta think about your long term career and be honest with yourself. Did you just write the next Umbrella or the next album filler whatever joint? If you got a smash, you can get diff ppl to bid for it, thus gaining leverage which allows you to negotiate a better deal. If nobody wants your track except one cat, and he/she doesn't really even give that much of a ****, then what the hell do you have to lose? No one else wants it anyway. Use the credit to get a better deal next time man.
And I don't have tunnel vision homie, I was trying to stay on the topic of the thread. It's you guys that keep going here and there with the posts.
