Everybody alway says TruePianos is so great....but honestly they sound fake as hell to me...Jazzbaby is much better and is free.

Honestly I like the Alicia Keys Piano VST...I haven't tried Jazzbaby though, props for the tip.

I heard that Alicia's Keys is sounds really good but eats CPU like no other.

I think drums are my X factor, sometimes I kill em so damn good, and sometimes I just cant find tha right thing to do with em

i have alot of beats undone just because I have no drum melodies\

Piano for me unless the entire track is based around a Piano Melody. I can never incorporate a good arrangement of piano keys into an already existing melody. Bass comes in a close second for the exact same reason unless I use cello or Bass strings, I can always make those work.

To anyone having trouble with drums, I'd suggest trying to program them. People will tell you it takes away "realism", but if you take the time to "program" them realistically, it won't be a problem. Step sequencers can be your best friend.

I also stumbled across that free "Endorphin" compressor about a week ago, Love it. Makes your drums knock w/o making them peak very high. Before that, I was compressing with MajorTom, but I just couldn't get the same sound out of it.

I need to have a "good" instrument first.

I can do everything at least alright so long as I dedicate enough time to it.

I might spend a few hours just playing and playing a a basic riff over and over on the piano until I get it right.

LOL, then the funny thing is it takes me even more time once the pressure of recording the riff is on might take me another 20-30 minutes to play that riff out just right.

It's all very satisfying to me though, frustrating but satisfying at the same time.

And I agree with Deranged, playing out drums is pretty much for the birds, unless you're good at playing drums, MPC, or playing out out on the keyboard.

You can make great sounding drum patterns on sequencers, the key like I said is putting in lots of time and effort to tweak velocities, note values, etc..

I practice remaking drum loops when I'm really bored and I've spent hours and hours recreating a 20 second loop no joke.

Moral of the story IMO unless you're big time with deadlines (in which case practice and experience shouldn't be a problem) there's really no rush, try to be as thorough as possible.

"Bassline" isn't really an instrument.

Accordion is a doddle...

I'd say Bagpipes or Digeridoo.

Sometimes I guess you need to hear something from somebody else, I been thinkin about using tha sequencer but Ive gotten so use 2 just playing all my instruments on tha keyboard it made me kinda reluctant to go back to sequencing, haha makes too much sense tho, imma try it for those beats, appreciate it

Hell yeah midi is your friend, lol. I usually just play them but instead of quantizing (depending on the groove i'm going for) i'll arrange the notes manually. Tweaking velocities moving midi notes slightly forward & backwards does wonders. Sound selection is of course the ultimate key though.

I dunno, theres a few instruments that I wish I had better patches for, but lately Ive really wanted to use some sitars/ethnic shiv but the stuff in hypersonic is ass

Piano... even when recording it live, it still sounds like ass. Maybe it's the sounds I'm using, I don't have a good piano VST.

i think u killed that piano riff on that 'lonely at the top' beat. that piano was crisp. try getting the halion 1 by steinberg, its the best ive heard besides an actual piano

Only way I do it.

I don't like the idea of using a keyboard to lay out drums either..

I sequence everything

I usually wont do things like hi-hats, shakers, etc. on my MPD-24 b/c the pads are stiff as sh*t.

I'm contempt with making all my shit on the keyboard 4 now. I wanna get a simple mpc just for drums though.

damn, glad i started out on a keyboard before anything else. i usually lay the main drums down with my mpd32 then use my keyboard for bass, percs, ect. but i also sequence on my keyboard as well. when you have hardware interfaces you have no choice but to learn, tho i use both soft and hard now. cubase to sequence into with my harware or use reason and cubase via rewire for my software ish. works wonders
