What is Trip Hop? Overview/History/Links

Wow, this sounds like the kind of stuff I'd love to end up doing. Thanks for the concise explanation :)

I'm just wondering, how old are all of you? It seems like most of you weren't old enough to know or remember when Trip-Hop was all the rage and all over the media, nor do you guys know some of the big names of Trip-Hop during that time (except for the founders of Trip-Hop). Here are some that were played heavily on the alternative radio stations during the height of their popularity (some of them incorporated other sub-genres into their style--for example, Lamb incorporates drum&bass and jazz):

Morcheeba
Hooverphonic
Lamb
Mono
Sneaker Pimps
Halou (this group's relatively new)

I'm 21.
I've been around since Massive Attack's Mezzanine. And how can you say that we don't list some any of the big names? Have you honesly read the list at the beggining?

To tell you the truth the reason I didn't list any of the ones you listed is because I, personally, don't like them.

Different Strokes, Different Folks.

For you first post on the Trip Hop forum, I have to say it contained some attitude. Maybe it's just me, but if not you might want to check that at the door. This is a friendly forum and we're not gonna sit and talk about who's dik has been in the pudding the longest.

im 19 and i have never listened to any sort of trip hop till about a month ago...

I make what i make and people told me my **** is "trip hop" so i am learning as i go...

I am doing my own thing completely and if that means i happen to fall into a genre do i have to know everything about it to be accepted as an artist...? not it my book

if i think about it i havent even listened to hip hop for more then about 2 years...i dont know who the game is i dont know one person on mtv...the only stuff i listen to is underground ****. ive never heard a 50 cent or eminem or any of those guys unless i was in someone elses car and the radio was on...

I listen to strait punk, jazz, rock, hardcore, and anything else except rap...the only "rap" and i wouldnt catogorise it in there cause these guys are mc's. are busta rhymes back in the day when he did tracks with tribe called quest (which i wasnt around for) and wu-tang back in the day (which i actualy did listen to) and when people give me **** for listening to something for 2 years and then trying to produce and **** (and to be honest i havent even really busted out a hip hop cd in like 6 months. I play my **** and they play theres and they sound like whoevers dick they suck and i sound like me.

Having said that i dont know why i just started ranting like a mother ****er but now you know some backround on G.H.S.

SifuBeats - Read my post again--there is no "attitude." I merely expressed my curiosity about the average age of the people that posted in this thread, and listed some of the big names of Trip-Hop that were quite significant to the movement--ones that were left out in this thread.

Whether you like them or not is completely irrelevant. They were an important part of the Trip-Hop movement and played a major role in gaining mainstream recognition--you don't leave bands out simply because you don't like them. History is history--you present it as it is--no less, no more. This isn't about your personal taste or bias--it's about informing people of the correct timeline and the extent of the entire movement. If this thread was called "List your favorite trip-hop bands," then your disposition would make sense, but this thread is titled "What is trip-hop," and that means you tell it like it is, without bringing in your personal bias.

IDM- A branch of electronica, but has roots in Trip Hop thanks to Prefuse 73

interesting..

IDM was around way before prefuse73..
some trip hop could fall under IDM but i can't see it working the other way.. IDM is just to broad a term as far as music goes, which kind of sucks.. not sure what to call it.. BLAM its trip hop..

prefuse is more glitch hop than trip hip.. if you're into that sound check out the label merck, they're putting out some awesome stuff..

trip hop and downtempo are pretty damn interchangable.. pretty much the only difference is a four on the floor or a break beat..

sifu and fresh- please come to use with any problems or concerns!! there are some many forums and so many members that unless people did point out problems FP would not run nearly as smoothly as it does..

Thanks for the clarification, Infra.

Lunatique, chances are if I don't like them then I'm not gonna be able to spout them off the top.

If you read my second post you'd understand my delima.

Thank you!!! Exactly what I was getting at when I was explaining to Sifu.

On another note....I would like to retract Boards of Canada from my idea of trip hop. Definitely a more expansive band and hops over many genres in a single album. But then again....what electronic artist doesn't do that?! :D

I watched a show on the history of Electronic Music in my MIDI class. Trip Hop's definition is Ambient-Abstract Downtempo Hip Hop.

Hmmmm...did the video mention any specific artist related to the genre?

Massive Attack, Morcheeba, Tricky...

Most of the Bristol cats. The video said that it was a British take on Hip Hop (like Jungle)

I'd say start at your local record store and peruse the trip hop bin....but that's somewhat rare.

lol.. oh btw spotted that u like boards of canada which album wud u say is best.. ive got geogaddi the circular drums are really nice but it bores me at time

Geogaddi is incredible. And it was the first album of theirs that I listened to. But you will die over their first...which is truly masterful. If you haven't already, check out "Music Has the Right To Children". It's considered a classic among IDMers. :)

has anyone here heard of Forest For The Trees?

it was a concept album by "Mellow Gold" producer Carl Stephenson, who is known in some circles as the Godfather of Trip-Hop.

if you listen to Forest For The Trees, make sure you are tripping!

this site does a good job of packaging packages:

Boards of Canada = "illbient" lol.

Dang..I hate genre placement on groups. Mostly because I get tired or keeping up with the all-to-often over-specific descriptions and prerequisites that they attach. :)
