Understanding EQ / Everthing in its own space

Ok say you have a synth sound with alot of low end, how would you mix that if you need room for the 808 ?

Amazing advice here! Thanks for these tips. I am currently trying to EQ tape hiss out of sample (the tape hiss was on the original recording, so not from a bad source). Previously use WavePad Sound Editor to reduce this and then put Low Pass Filter on, greatly reduced the hiss but wanted to try and EQ out the remainder. Any advice on how to do this without losing the original color or if I need to EQ it out, any way to reintroduce it?
 
Wow this is great, I never thought EQing and frequency range was so complex and important for production :x
 
It's THE MOST important thing for production besides the content of the track. A track can go from good to amazing with a low pass on the bass and a high pass on the leads just for example.
