im looking to upgrade my studio equipment and im down to the triton rack and triton extreme(i dont want the roland or yamaha simply because my friends have them and i can use them whenever i want)

the guy at GC keeps telling me to get the triton extreme over the rack but cant give me a good reason. the rack would save me some money since i already have a keyboard(kinda crappy) controller and sequencing software.

have any of you found one to be drastically more effective than the other. and if not then which would you recomend if i already have a keyboard.

If you already have a keyboard, go for the rack. Use the extra money to buy some food, because I sure am hungry!!!

i keep telling the guy at GC that im hungry and need the money but he keeps shoving the workstation down my throat. i dont know if its because he knows somehting i dont or hes just trying to sell units.

The Triton Extreme has about 95% of the PCM data that a Triton Studio has with all the exb boards installed for much less money. Its up to you but I have have the Extreme 88 and I personally feel I did the right thing in selling my Classic to buy the extreme. The extra synth, Rhodes and Wurly patches are worth it alone. If you delve into editing you can see that hardly any of the synth EXB PCM data has been used in the factory presets because there is just so much of it. Also worth mentioning is the Valve Force. Contrary to what others might say to you. It does actually work. Crank it up and you get some great compression effects.
So if you did want extra sounds I am not actually sure which models in the Triton range can hold all the EXB boards at once. not all of them can so thats something that you have to work out. The Le sure can't!
Also the rack don't have a sequencer and I'm not sure about the sampler either the extreme has both.

The only way to decide though is to go in there ignore that sales *****, who DOES want to sell you the most expensive thing in the range and try both yourself.

YOU decide!

good luck.

Yeah, the Triton Rack has a sampler. if you want to expand in the future, the Triton rack is the way to go.

Just purchased the Extreme 76 + 96MB RAM + MOSS + 1GB Flash Card + Korg Legacy Collection for $1999

Try and beat that deal ;)

I got the Triton Rack + MOSS + PCM 04 Dance Extreme + PCM 05 Vintage Archives, + Keystation Pro 88, + Cubase SX3 for $1550. (Triton Rack and expansion boards were used, and purchased together, Keystation Pro 88 and Cubase SX3 were new and purchased together from a different place). I also got a Fantom XR (rack) for $1050 (from yet another place). So, for $2600, I got an expanded Triton Rack, a Fantom Rack, the best (in my opinion) 88 key controller, and the best (in my opinion) sequencer. Not too shabby. I know some people don't like using computers, but I prefer computer sequencers to keyboard sequencers hands down. I like seeing everything on my big monitor (soon to be 2 21" monitors). So, in my opinion, I got the better deal. I would strongly advise everyone out there debating it to go on and get a rack + a midi controller and sequencer. In almost any keyboard out there, if there is a rack unit it is almost always more expandable than the keyboard. And it is almost always cheaper too. More bang for the buck.

The Triton reack is ok but even if you have it fully loaded with PCM cards, you can only access 2 cards at a time. This turned me off.

Seems like everyone is getting good deals on their gear. I thought I was the man when I got my Triton Studio for $1050. For just under the same price each, I got the Fantom XR and Motif ES Rack. Now, I only need to spend time doing some music instead of admiring my gear...but that is one of my bad habbits as a junkie ;) (I don't like gear whore but the title may fit as well). Also, I picked up a Roland 88 key A-90 expanded for $400. Once I get this MIDEX8 working properly...I am going to get hard once all the junk in my living room will be controlled from the A-90.

That was a good deal on the A90... The A Series are clearly the better performance MIDI Controllers (IMHO)

Don't you find having both the Fantom XR & MO'ES Rack a bit overkill?

I did find those 2 to offer similar sound structures, especially with "bread n butter" stuff... Of course the Fantom had more synth/pads + better/flexible filter algorithms and Motif with very good drums/percussion, arps, orchestra/ethnic/world samples, & nice choirs in comparison, but still...

I'm planning on getting the Motif ES Rack too. May be a bit overkill, but I'd rather have overkill than underkill. LOL. I know, I know, I probably don't really need it. But I probably didn't really need 20 inch rims on my Cadillac either, or a 65 inch tv. Those are overkill and I am quite happy with it, so a little overkill in my studio won't hurt either.

Maybe..but I am attempting to have something for everybody in my studio..I am still planning to add a Kurzweil synth and an EMU synth....

But right now, my next major buy will be an analog synth...Andromeda A6 or a Voyager.

That's right, forget you stated it was for requests and other needs... They both sound different enough and offer something each other may lack... I really cannot talk, considering my gear list contains several ROM'plers as well :hello:

im kind of in the same situation. Im looking for a rack mount. I have tried out the motif es rack and phantom racks and think there ok. Im actually most impressed with the sounds coming from the Triton Extreme...Only thing is it doesn't have a rackmount. Does the triton extreme have alot of sounds the rackmount does not carry? I have yet to try out the triton rack. The triton extreme sounds were really good though, too bad i don't need a full featured keyboard...just it's sounds

Whatr Korg did with the Triton Extreme was add many of the sounds of their PCM expansion boards to its internal ROM. There may be some additional patches but most of the sounds come from the expansion boards.

So getting the Triton rack and adding these PCM boards will suit your needs..however, you can only load patches from 2 PCM boards at a time. This is the reason I quickly got rid of the rack after having it for a week. Racks made from Yamaha and Roland allow you to access all the patches on expansion boards at once without loading them.

Jahrome,

Since this thread was revived, how did you get a Triton Studio for $1050!? Now that's amazing...New?

Japan. I got a few from a dealer(www.soundfiz.com) that were new in the box but didn't come with a manufacturers warranty. I just kept one for myself.

This site has one for $1113 approx. It says it is used but this is exactly what I was told when I placed my order. I received a new unit or it could have been a factory refurbished unit.

does the triton rack have good drums in your opinion? What rack mount are you most pleased with?

The standard preset drums on the Triton are not that great IMHO. But you can tweak them the way you want for quality drums. Both the Motif and Fantom have better preset drum kits.

Honestly, I prefer neither over the other...Motif ES Rack and Fantom XR. They are both great modules. But if I had to choose one, it would be the Fantom because I believe it has better expansion boards available. I don't care much for Yamaha's PLG boards. Also, the Fantom XR is also a sampler although I don't care much for it's sampling features. But they are there if I ever need them.
