There are more people in the music industry today than there has ever been before, in history. On top of that, we all want to gain more listeners in hopes that they’ll become our fans because we all know that fans are a large contributor to our success or failure as musicians. So, how do we gain more fans without being labeled spammers?

The internet is the best way to stay in contact with music listeners because it allows us to communicate with people directly, as long as you’re not a spammer. There are too many music spammers that misuse the internet, whether this is on purpose or not, and lose listeners just a fast as they gain them. Honestly, I get bored with the redundant methods used by musicians that lack the online social skills necessary to build a following. This is my attempt to help those of you who want to build a following without being labeled a spammer.

 1. Give people a reason to listen to your music. People are always saying things like “Download my free mixtape” or “checkout my website”. This is a poor way to start a relationship with music listeners. I get the best results when talking about what their interest are, before telling them to visit my page or listen to my music. It’s less intrusive and a warmer way to gain that first listen or download.
 2. Take advantage of online signatures. Signatures are great for text messages, emails, and forums because they allow you to talk about whatever you’re interests and bring attention to your website and music. People that like what you have to say will naturally want to learn more and will visit your website as a result.
 3. Email periodical newsletters. Email addresses are mostly used for business purposes. A newsletter is the same as your own online newspaper. It’s your opportunity to keep people updated with latest news and website updates. Resist from sending more than one update per week and you’ll easily avoid spam folders.
 4. Be a follower to get followers. Everyone wants followers on twitter, facebook, myspace, and other social networks. Most people will follow you back after you follow them and even if they don’t, you’ll be able to learn what people chat about most. Learning this information helps you to find ways to engage people and opens the door to gaining a new listener.
 5. Create more than just music. Get involved in your community or, better yet, create something to do in your community. We’re all looking for ways to overcome boredom. By creating things to do and finding ways to contribute to society, you’ll gain positive publicity. You can also help other musicians to promote their shows and music. This is a great way to expand your reach and find collaborations.
 6. Work well with others. The biggest problem with musicians and performers is their egos. Egos can get in the way of your progress and will make it harder for people to work with you. No matter how you look at it, this is bad for business. So try to keep your ego in check when working with others and you’ll find that your interactions will become more pleasant.
These are just a few ways that I was able to come up with. Use this information and expanded your reach. Hopefully, you will find the success that you want. Good luck!

That IS spamming. Great way to NOT get anyone to come to your site.

if you have a few sites, link them all to each other. for example your youtube page might link to reverbnation soundcloud and also a homepage then they all link back to your youtube. sorta like a mini network that people can follow if they happen to stumble across one of them randomly. you can also get fans too if they happen to be joined to one or more places you have a page on.

Like breadcrumbs

Great job on this post. I think we sometimes forget to connect with people first, which is really important.

When sending messages/emails to potential listeners/customers, the main thing is to personalize the message to the one you are sending it to. In my opinion. I see so many of these spam messages which look like shit and I guarantee that only like 1 out of 100 people will in the end check them out.

When you send messages, take a look at the receivers website/myspace (etc.) and comment on some things on his page. in example make a comment about some of his tracks. That way, he respects that you had the time to listen to his stuff and not just spamming. I guarantee, that way most people will send a message back to you.

On myspace, spamming has gotten out of control. I receive like 20 spam messages a day. And that's why I haven't used Myspace in a long time, it's dead to me basically. There's so many other better ways to get connected with artists.

I agree you Lifeadeath, it's a fact that FanReach has gotten out of control. There are too many desperate music creators trying to either make money, get famous, or both. Luckily, most of them don't have what it takes or won't put in the necessary work for their goals to become a reality. Thank god for spammers because they teach us how to do it right every time they do it the wrong way.

As the saying goes, content is king..

And imho when it comes to mailing lists, you should think very carefully when to send email. It's very easy to get your emails labeled as an annoyance and even spam by the receivers. At least I personally love clicking that mark as spam button on my gmail account when I receive some "great beat dealzz!!11" from mailing lists I'vee never subscribed to, and might even report to the mailing list provider if it annos me enough..

Swag! :4theloveofgod:

Lol!

On a serious note though, this list is definitely on point! Quality info! Good job JC

this is so true spamming will kill your chances of being listened to and be ignored

I'm glad this post has helped so many of you. Starting this Tuesday, on 9/27/2011, I'll be putting information like this in my newsletters. The emails will include placement opportunities, music marketing tips, real world business strategies, music reviews, and more. Some people think I'm crazy for giving this information away, but the truth is I can't handle the demand myself. This is mostly due to stolen studio gear.

Be sure to sign-up here so you can get the emails, if you're interested.
