thinking of quiting beatmaking.

Yes I think you should quit "beatmaking" and make a sincere effort toward expanding your skill-set for "music making", this - believe it or not - is a completely different undertaking.

Yeah...but if he can't even make a beat he likes, how is he supposed to produce a full song that he is satisfied with.

Back to the drawing board...or like you said...quit.

Me personally...I don't even understand the concept of not making music...

---------- Post added at 11:13 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:57 PM ----------

What does this mean?

Don't worry about that, yo...people just say that because it sounds good/right to say.

At the end of the day...yes, you should be able to make a beat that you love. Then learn to make a song out of it.

People are tying to tell you to do step two when you haven't even figured out step one yet.

I understand needing/wanting to make songs and not just beats. It IS important and it is what I do.

But believe me...I learned to hit a note before making a chord. And I learned chords before I learned progression. And I learned to make a full composition before making a song. And in making a song I also learned how to write lyrics and sing melody so I knew where the beat could take an artist.

I think too many people are getting caught up in pretending that making hit songs are easy...

Knock it off...it's not. Most of these people don't even like their own music yet. And I stress the word YET.

It takes time and development.

Stop worrying about your age. I don't care if you're 9 or 99. What have you done to better yourself? How much time have you truly devoted to improving your skills and which skills are those? Playing piano? Sampling? Sound design? Engineering? Singing? Rapping?

Think about it...you are trying to accomplish yourself what a team of professionals work together to create.

A song in the mainstream will have a dedicated artist (singer/rapper/both), mix engineer, mastering engineer, executive producer, producer, marketing team...

I personally have taken myself into each of these areas and continue to this day to better myself in each one. And when I say better yourself, I mean you need to be seeing results.

If the next beat you made didn't outdo your last then you probably didn't incorporate anything new.

Learn something new then use it in your music. Find out if it works for you or not. Maybe it just doesn't work for that song...save it in your noggin so that when you make your next song you have some artillery going in if the situation does call for that particular technique.

If you compose, learn to sample. If you sample, learn to compose. If you play piano, learn to use a daw instead. If you use presets in your vsts, learn to create your own.

This is a never-ending cycle. There is no "finally, I know everything I need to know about music." Because you won't ever. Once you believe you have learned everything then you simply just gave up learning/gave up creating/gave up imagining/gave up becoming anything like my competition.

the skill that has improved my beats are learning piano by learning basic chords and using my left hand to phatten up the sound by useing major 7ths. i would say if anything was to improve me it would be that but i still lack just that thing that would make me great.I dont know if i have to have perfect pitch or what but the guy i was watching had no previous piano lessons and he was coming off with killer melodys off the top of his head in a minute. As of right now i kinda dont feel so down anymore cause he actually makes me wanna be better than him but that seems like a journey that will never come but how do i know that it won't. To tell you the truth i have not been on the grind about learning like i was when i first started taking lessons. Its like i lose interest in the middle of something just because of work or just wanting to hurry the process of making that hit song that i still havent made in my opinion. Im my own worst critic and i dont know if this is normal thing because of hearing your stuff all the time or knowing it doesnt compare to a super producer.

The problem is the sounds you working with. I've listened to your beats. There not very good. Download/buy yourself some new VST packs.

I've been beat making for about 11months. Keep at it, if it's your passion you will eventually improve.

I say don't give up but it does take hard work and there are no guarantee that you will be placed. but if you quit then of course thats the end you will neva know

+1

your ideas actually arent that bad at all man...the sounds on the other hand need to be better...i guarantee you'd see things in a different light if you switched your sounds....in fairness how can a chef make a tasty meal with terrible ingredients:D???

You seem to have some music theory knowledge.
But I would say become a whiz in music theory, rhythm,,all that jazz.

Some people have a set workflow that gets them done with stuff fast. Others haven't quite got theirs put together yet.

Dont know your skill/knowledge level, but just a note.
Knowing all your instruments types, and knowing them in and out..will do wonders...

Me personally, I am focusing on music theory currently...

The ones in it for money always end up quitting... eventually.

I started making beats less than a year ago. I'm in month 10 and my game just took a huge leap forward. I try to make beats on a daily basis. I'm also not in it to make thousands of dollars. If it happens one day, it happens. I just love hip-hop and music in general, it shaped who I am today. I give back and pay homage to my favorite artists through making my beats. Just keep one foot in front of another and eventually you'll lead yourself to the place you want to be.

d major when you make a beat do you try to vision someone rapping or try to rap to your beats? cause i don't see how an artist can even begin trying to rap/sing on your beats. imo

THats te shit right there.

Firstly, don't do this shit, for money, or fame or any of that bullshit, cos you'll almost certainly be disappointed. So if you love music, keep at it bro...you'll get there eventually.

What are yall talking about sounds,I got a roland fantom x and sylenth, battery,ik sonic synth in software. And as for my beats i think some of those are actually good beats except shes like the wind,i think thats a hit i hear lil wayne on that.I started making beats when i was 17 trying to be a three 6 mafia producer or another timbaland just wanting to be the greatest.Ill throw some of my new shit on myspace so you can hear the improvment cuase alot of those beats on there know were when i was studying piano.

I've been at this shit for 1 year and I love the music I make....artists are using my beats and I feel like the only direction is foward.

How can your years of experience leave you in a position where you don't like your own music? - The answer is you just haven't branched out enough.

1 year ago this website was where I started and from there I found more & more music websites....I posted up my music and got feedback. I eventually started to collab with rappers...then producers and so on.

I cut off all the Yes Men in my life...You need people around you who will say your beat is garbage if thats what they think...Criticism is a great tool to use if you want to advance.

Don't brush off the "get new synths" advice because thats a good start. Having a huge library of different sounds will give you more ideas more often and what not...

There's a couple threads around this site dedicated to what you're on. Some videos, blogs online. I posted a couple thoughts myself.

This is one o the reasons why I posted em.

if u think about quitting music then quit. if not then keep at it. its that simple. work on ur craft one by one. if its mixing then work on that, if its melodies then work on your chords, if its arrangement then study your fav song compositions and how they are structured. in terms of the new sounds or having bigger libraries, learn synthesis. Learn the ps and qs of oscillators, how they function, filters etc. Then 1 or 2 vsts will be all that u need. I will take the knowledge of sound manipulation over 1000 vst presets anyday. another thing. take all the criticism in and let that be more fuel to the fire. I would never say I have good beats. act like your beats are never good and be willing to improve everytime you make a new joint. be humble. this is my 2 cents. have a nice day

Quit already... the game is over saturated anyway.

If you need help with different aspects of making beats... I nave no problem answering questions. But on the topic of quitting... don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Lmao @ all the dudes in here all "aww, it will be okay... hang in there sport."
**** that, BYE!

Ambitions are good, but if your only drive forward is the dream of making hits then it's not likely to happen. You should find (most) studio-time fun and something you cant help spending hours on... regardless of what the world thinks of your music.

If you want to improve your production skills, it might be a good idea to forget about making great tracks for a while, and simply focus on learning. You don't have to make great tracks just yet.
One approach to learning is to take an existing beat/track and try to replicate it, simply for the sake of identifying some of the aspects of a great track. What you learn can then be used for something completely different and utterly your own.

Oh, and I agree with what others have said that new sounds, synths or effects can be very inspiring.

Hope that helps.

listen to my newest R&b stuff, these beats were did just in the last todays. For poeple saying that the other beats on myspace are wack i short of agree to a certain point cause i didnt know any kinda of piano then. And when i first wrote this thread i was just overwhelmed that night when i heard that other guys beats cause there are clearly greater than mine but i think this is giving me will to do better. And as for sounds i do also agree so can anyone give me some examples of phat synths ,strings, and brass that will be perfect.I already got sylenth which is a awesome synth but i freakin love motion synths with the passion and crazy leads.Give feedback on the r&b

I don't understand threads like these. It's pretty simple in my eyes lol.

Do what you like / love to do. This isn't your career as of yet so you don't actually have to force anything. You don't have a client waiting for an amazing beat that you can't deliver because your having a block or simply can't produce that caliber of a beat.

If you enjoy this why would you stop? The minute I stop enjoying anything art related I stop because whatever comes after will suck. I used to do a lot of graphic art because I loved it. Now I do it when I feel in the mood to actually do it. When I sit down to make a beat, the minute I stop enjoying the process I stop because I know damn well whatever I do will suck and just won't work. I don't understand why you would stop grinding for what you love though, that just doesn't make sense to me. Now if you don't enjoy this then yea, stop. Why would you do something you don't enjoy, especially if your not at a caliber to earn a good income off of it?

man, hell naw!!!!! f that just do u find your own, get your own style and build on that ive been making beats for along time stopped off and on for my kids hittin the block being stupid when i shouid of been in the lab working now im 34 still making tracks i mean i sell atleast two tracks a week for like 300 a pop! and thats chump change but the main thing is keep grinding i dnt care if im 45 im a keep bangin for the love, art, and when your lucky some money, peace out....100
