thinking of quiting beatmaking.

I have been trying to be as good as the people i have listened to since i was a teen and now at the age of 26 i am debating wether to just give it up or stay with it and see if i get any better. The reason for all this is because yesterday i went over to a local producers house who i have been i contact with for about a month giving him props on his music thinking he was real good.Well when i went over i found out that this guy was on a super star level that made music like a platnium producer and has already done a beat for joe budden. I mean this guy is no joke and it made me wonder if i ever was gonna get to a level as great as him. This guy hasnt had no music lessons or nothing,he is just very creative and came up with a beat in a matter of minutes. Me on the other had takes hours maybe be even a week to come up with a decent beat and its not even on a level that i wanna be on. The only thing that has taken my skills up a little is learning piano but i still havent even came close to mastering it and don't know if that will even make me so much better. So just wanted to get your opinions on this and just wondering if any others have had these thoughts before but continued on just as a hobby or still nothing happened?
 
Just because you like something, that doesn't mean it has to like you back.

Maybe your true talent lies in some other thing. Be honest with yourself.

Yes I think you should quit "beatmaking" and make a sincere effort toward expanding your skill-set for "music making", this - believe it or not - is a completely different undertaking.

D major man...don't give up on your dreams! I was where you are now about nine, ten years ago. I worked 3 jobs trying to get money to go to music school and when I finally did I was like "WOW" I suck compared to all these guys. And here I was thinking I was going to be the next Timbo or Premier...lol..I laugh now but then I was down and was going to quit, but you know what I had a great teacher that said there is so many areas in the music business other than producing so you can go over the wall, around the wall or walk away quiter! I was like wow that was harsh, but it made me push harder. I changed my focus to engineering instead and now I work at a studio doing what I love. I still make beats on the side (I also play piano) but I know that I will never be Timbo and that's okay. So take what your good at and go from there you never know what road it will take you down. Dreams can change......but your desire shouldn't.
 
engineering is kinda something i would like to do too but still i don't want that.I wanna be the guy that creates the sound that people feel and dance too. Music production school was always something i wanted to do too but there is no good school here except a community college audio recording program.

:D yeah well, music production school is an option. Although, why go to school for music production when you can intern with a music producer?

IMHO, leave the schools for traditional education. And learn recording arts through apprenticeship, its a more natural learning arrangement.

I quit for almost a year. mainly because i was too busy with university.
i recently started producing again and making beats, and i regret taking the time off.

I have to agree with Hakim, to become a good beatmaker you have to understand how to "make music". You have to study it like a science, understand what makes a beat sound good ... know your chord progressions ... work on being creative ...


One thing i've been doing recently is producing solo piano songs. I'm reading up piano composition theory and i feel that thats helping me improve my keyboard skills.
Next i might try and focus on drums only.
 
To see progress in any field, it really takes a desperate obsession. You have to be thinking about production 24/7. There should be no such thing as free time. If you need to take a break from beatmaking, watch videos about producers or listen to music and study how each song is constructed. Do this while you eat and while you're traveling. Fall asleep while watching videos on your laptop or listening to music. Surf sites about music production. Listen to new artists with no biases on where they're from or what their sound is. Any other forms of entertainment such as tv or games should pale in comparison to the fulfillment you get from thinking about music production. Time not spent moving towards a goal is time spend moving away from it.

When music and production is always on your mind, an incredible thing will happen. Ideas and epiphanies will start to just hit you, and you'll be on the fast lane zooming past your peers just like that local producer. Talent is different from skill. You're born with talent, but you don't need talent to have skill. All you need is that 24/7 mindset.

Matter fact I'm taking too much time to type this. I gotta get back to work :]
 
D Major. If you really want to do it, just shut up and go back to work. If you don't really want to do it anymore, stop it and switch. But thinking about whether you'll be good or not is just wasting time.

I always knew I was gonna be hot I just had an ear and creativity to it from childhood. Did I make wack beats? For long fkin years. But then came a time when I mastered the processes and now it's "only" work to create good music. Of course I have a lot to learn still but now if I want to create this or that mood in a beat I know where to reach and what to do, and that came from years of learning and not talent.

Will something happen? that's all about if you're dedicated enough. that's the business part. it can be very tough to get placements and make money. but you have to grind hard and harder.

D Major, you don't need to go to school. When I started school in 99 the world was a different place. Now you have tons of tools available to you and can be make a hit song from your bedroom. It's up to you how bad you want it or how bad you don't...good luck!
 
Im glad that yall are telling me not to stop and i most likely wont but lets say i never become the producer i want to be what then. Sound enigneering or mixing and mastering seem like a thing that could interest me to or just even a piano player selling loops or a custom drum sample maker.Wouldnt i need to go to a audio school that would provide i understanding on engineering? If interning was so easy every body would be doing it but i live in a small town that only has one or two local studios that does mostly spanish music by old men.

Eh, you'll get all kinds of people sayin "don't give up on your dreams".

I'm not gonna be the one to shoot you down, but I'm not gonna be the guy that comes in and gives you a confidence boost when you need it most.

Be real with yourself. You've been doin this atleast 7 years. and your descent according to you. Do you have the confidence that you will get better?

You can hide it all you want to other people but you know what you really want to do, which means choosing this as a hobby, selling your gear, or to continue to your goals.

GOALS OR DREAMS.My dream is to be the a great producer like polo da don and a goal would be to just be a good producer working with local artists.I have been doing this since 16 and i am 26 now and only about 5 people have heard my beats in person and the rest have been on myspace which i only made this year.
 
Link up with some players and try actual production instead of beatmaking, you might catch a second wind
 
Just do it man, dont let another mans production credits discourage you. ppl get placements all the time, and not to hate on him, but doing a beat for Joe Budden isn't exactly making it, More than likely budden aint pay for it.
 
I would say im not a person that has ideas running threw my head and i still havnet collabed with another producer. I asked the guy who i mentioned but this guy is on a level were he needs no help making a beat at all and i dont wanna feel like he is carrying me. So is it possiable that hooking up with another producer can actually just make me and him a better producer.The neptunes,cool and dre,heatmakers,even timbaland all have help.
