Another option is drum synth programs, like Hammerhead. They have presets, but like a synthesizer, everything is completely editable so you can make hundreds of drum sounds that are totally YOUR OWN. This really only applies for clubby-type rap music... and electronic. If you want gritty, natural sounding drums, I suggest recording your own. I don't even play drums but I bought a drum kit just to sample from. I will let Cool Edit record and I'll just sit there and bang on the thing, hitting every part of it from every angle. Oh and remember that "drum sounds" don't have to be drums at all. If you have a mic, try beatboxing. Any noise at all can be used for drums... I mean look at Prefuse73!

Why do people always want such-and-such producers kits. These people be selling all these producers kits on-line and there may be like two or three sounds that I have heard these procducers use that you can find on any drum kit that doesnt have a producer name on it. It you want a 9th drum kit all you have to do it buy fruity loops cause thats what he makes his beats on. If you want a dre kit go and buy his albums and run it through a wav editor such as soundforge and create your on dre kit. At least you will know that it really came from a dre beat. Stop wasting your money on these B.S. producer kits that these websites are selling. That money can be used for something much better.

I know what you are saying but people are just trying to make a honest living. It's up to the consumer to make smart decisions. Not to start the millionth 9th Wonder thread but its a little more than just buying fruity loops. I wont even attempt to talk afout eq's on here but one thing I will say- You have to at least get the old sp-1200 stock sounds that come with some older versions of FL. The only way people will learn is thru trial and error. Every aspiring producer has bought some items for their music that they eventually dont use. It comes with the territory of perfecting your own sound.

I totally agree. I just recently went back to sampling (strictly). I haven't bought a drum sample pack online yet, that sounds like anything I get "raw" from vinyl or a CD. From what I can tell, those sounds have been processed so much that most of the time they have lost they're original feel. Just an observation. I mean you want things "punchy" but to me.. kicks especially... they sound sort of muffled in a way. I don't know, just my opinion. The packs you buy online are more useful for composing rather than combining them with "raw" samples.

actually, 9th doesn't use FL's drums.

and NO one has my drums (for the most part :) ) because I more often than not, layer them specifcally.

I think this is a good thread, but I don't agree with anyone here. I mean, someone even said it in an earlier post that we should get drum samples from wherever we like...As long as you're tweaking them and doing something to make them your own, what's the difference? You're still "sampling". Sure, I prefer to sample my own sounds, but I have nothing against someone who bought theirs on a CD...

I understand the argument made against cats who are just trying to sound like the latest "superproducer so and so"...that's valid, but sucessful producers have even admitted to sampling other famous producer's drums...as long as you're freaking it, I say no harm, no foul...

only "kit" I've ever bought is the Triton, Fantom, and Motif Kompact Kits...

All those producer kits are EVERYWHERE on the net, why pay for em?

i must have at least 800 dollars worth of drum sample cd's that i have purchased over the years. I dont mess with those cheap ass "producer kits " that they sell though. stock Battery drum kits are the greatest

noob question: when you guys make your drum kits, do you record loops, or just the hits?

Nah, I disagree. Although those " Used by Dr. Dre - Just Blaze - Neptunes - Scott Storch " are wack (u ain't gonna make hits like them unless you blatantly bite their ****) ,some drums in certain drum kits are eq'd and compressed in a way a rookie can't eq it, which is good because it'll make your **** bang, you the producer gotta flip it and bounce in a way where you make the **** yours, u know? I mean how many producers in hip hop throughout the years, took other niggas drums? How many niggas used EPMD "you're a customer" drums among many others? Sheeeeit, Even in Scratch issue #2 Kanye West admits to str8 jackin Eminem's drums in the studio, copying his drum disks and whatnot. That goes to show you, it's all what you do with what you got...

i dig deep

i have over 50,000 drum samples

some of them are the same sounds just layered

i only bought one kit in my life
and that was moderbeats.com Club claps

thats it

i dont believe in that B.S not sharing your drums that there sacred
its the effect that you put on the drums you have makes or breaks beats and in the sequence you put them

i dont believe in keeping my samples to myself cause its 2 years of internet digging and it would be selfish to me if i didnt share my samples because my samples were shared with me

even when its conflicting because you happen to illegaly share samples that are suppose to be boughten and paid for
but there not

and i only bought one sample pack

and 2 weeks later i dug on the internet and i found that sample pack for free

along with every other drum and sample kit ModernBeats.com has to offer

i am going to make all my samples available for free
with this said and me doing you people a favor

do me a favor and check out my ebay auction

I Have a MPC maxed 2000 with maxed out 32 mb of memory and 8 mixer outs i paid 180 dollars each to have them installed

and a Gemini XL-500 Direct Drive turntable and brand new SHURE STYLUS to take samples from records
straight to the mpc

thats well said. i made that mistake myself. buyin more and more stuff and sounds that i dont need thinkin it will magically make me a hit producer. easy mistake. if i had to do it over again, i wouldn't have bought half of the stuff i have including all of the drums. i only use the same 8 drums out of the 900 i have
yep, that's one of the main reasons drums are sold... those sites are just waitin for that new and aspiring producer thats so eager to have drum sounds... thats so eager to look impressive to everyone, "yo, i got 1000 drum sounds" then, when u start to listen to the drums, u hear 3 or 4 of them are the same... 3 of them are pitched up or down... or they might have a little extra reverb on them... not to mention the ones that are the exact same drum sound... now 1000 drums become approx 350 - 400 drums... also, u'll start rollin with ur favorites and never even look at the rest ever again... i got over 1000 drums, most are from the net free... most of the time, its from sites like this from users who just decide to "post" what they have, as well as the wav file sites that give out their "sample packs" for free, there's thousands of those... the rest are custom made from records, tapes, cds, etc...the only way u'll have the same drums is if u use it as is... ive been stop collecting drums... all the basic drums i have... time to create ur/my own now.

da relic

Well in reality we all have the same drums anyway, wheather we sample them from records that have been sampled 1million time already or we're buying them online. I do think you have a good point. but its nothing wrong with expanding your sound library...

Thx...I was thinking about Kanye in particular in my earlier post...I remember reading an interview where he admitted to jacking other producer's drums but couldn't remember where I'd read it, so I didn't reference it...
