Most soulful instrument

Which instrument do you feel evokes the most soul when played by someone who has mastered that instrument? I bet alot of people will say piano or sax.

I'm going to have to choose guitar. I was just listening to David Gilmour's guitar solos on "Comfortably Numb", "Time", and "On An Island"...those solos give me chills down my spine almost everytime I listen to them. The nuances of the guitar make it the most soulful instrument in my eyes.

How about you?
 
grand piano. i love listening to songs with pianos. the way stevie wonder and ahmad jamal played the piano gave me chills.

guitar definetly is a strong second in my opinion though
 
saxophone, esp. soprano, guitar, yea, but more of a bass...and trumpet, but soul is more of a feeling....cuz you can use all these instruments and its nowhere near soulful lol
 
guitar most def. You can make it scream, weep, or caress.. . piano is sounds allwasy like a ...piano. maybe an angry or a happy piano but still.
 
Definitely agree w/ guitar.

Check out this live version of Comfortably Numb. I can't even describe how the end solo makes me feel...

For example, violin can have some soul, but I don't feel much soul (if any) from cello. Concert strings, for the most part, have a very epic, happy, or sad emotion to them.

... allow me to reiterate: Strings (IMO) can create a heartfelt emotion which touches the soul. That (IMO) is what makes a soulful instrument. Its ability to touch your soul.....

No doubt! When I bought that 2CD Pulse set when it 1st came out, I remember it was in a box and had a blinking red light at the top to attract people's attention in the store. The version I was just listening to was David Gilmour (live in Gdansk, Poland) from 2006. That last solo is off the charts with soul.

Understood....I wasn't saying your opinion was wrong or anything. Sorry for the confusion. I was trying to get an understanding of which instrument in particular in the string section.

"Change Gon Come" is an amazing song. Which version is your favorite Kyng? My favorite is the Allman Brothers'

It really depends on who is playing the instrument. I'm sure Stevie Wonder can play a crappy casio and it will be dripping with soul.

Strings really get me, like in Al Green's version How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.

My favorite instrument in soulful music is the Fender Rhodes.
 
Al Green's band definitely has some really deep soul in most of his songs.

Far and away, I have to go with the Hammond B-3 organ.

Cant get more soul than fu(c/n)king gospel roots!

Actually that first video he is using a Hammond A-100, but its the same instrument, the only difference is the cabinet.
 
flutes are awesome too....its how u use it tho...some synths...kinda like the complimentary sound in COMMON - BE the intro song....beautiful rendering....i commend kanye on that production
