Most Overrated Rapper Ever Is?

only kids say KRS is overrated. it's hard to understand how someone was the man in thier day, if the person making that statement didn't live in that day. its like years from now, people will say jay-z and lil wayne were overrated, and you guys will argue with the kids who make those statements. its the same issue with the kid who just ran out and saw the new gi joe movie but can't understand the big deal about Casablanca or Gone with the Wind. its the same thing now with the younger cats who can't understand the big deal people make over Biggie or Pac. if you were around in thier hayday, then you lived the life and realized what the big was, but tryin to explain it to someone years later who wasn't there and can't feel it, is a waste of time and oxygen. me personally, i'm into MC's, not merely rappers. so people who have clever word play, an extensive vocab, breath control, subject matter, and a tight flow appeal to me. i don't care who's "hot". thats sht means nothing to me. hot=popular, it does not equal good. KRS-1 spoke on real issues, covering up ur willy, black cops and police brutality, as well as the down side to living the fastlife. but, above all, my man was all about rockin the party and having fun. not just phuckin hos, sellin drugs and killin people. bottom line, if you weren't popping when he was, then you wouldn't understand. same way ur kids won't understand why you think jay-z or weezy is the greatest of all time. woop woop, thats the sound of the police!

nah nah i see what youre saying, but i have respect for a LOT of dudes from his time, even earlier, and ive even been a fan of his. but lyrically, hes weak. put him next to ra, and he pales in comparison. both rapped about similiar subjects, but krs is still on that basic ish. thats all i was saying. i mean the thread is about overrated rappers, which i think he was. still think hes good, but he doesnt belong on the pedistool hes put on. he revolutionized the game though and i cant take anything away from that, but lyrically he bores me.

KRS isn't a lyrical god, but he is a damn good motivational speaker. I don't know of many other rappers who can make a point in a verse like KRS can. Even his new stuff like DJ on the DJ Rev album and Robot with buckshot were all truth telling.

Lyrically, KRS is still top five compared to any mainstream artist out today. He may not have the rhyme pattern that you're looking for, but you got to remember his debut came in 1986-87. His basis for flow and rap pattern was basic as far as today's standard. Still, he was able to take something so basic and catapault it to another realm as far as his concept and song theory went.

In 1986-87 there was no other KRS. He was an original. In 86-87 hardly any other emcee dared to step to KRS because they KNEW, not through media hype, but because of INTELLIGENCE, LYRICISM, FLOW, ABILITY TO ROCK A CROWD, CONCEPTS, AND SHOWMANSHIP, KRS WAS NOT TO BE FCUKED WITH...PERIOD.

He's a godfather in hip hop. He crafted his own niche in the genre through pure passion, knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. A leader as an complete emcee, not just a rapper (sorry Fabolous fans). He can rock a crowd just as easy as he did then, today. All the while, outshining 99% of the people that followed him. His style molded what you call hip hop and bred the likes of many "conscience" rappers today and of yesteryear.

KNOWLEDGE REIGNS SUPREME is not a myth, but a true documented legend.

You think he's overrated, ok...it's your opinion. But you gotta remember who all your favorite emcees molded THEIR style from.

P.S. If you said someone like Too Short I'd understand. KRS is no phony.

^^^i like it when i aint gotta write SH!T!!! someone writes it for me.

so who do you think it is? for me its KRS. dude is a legend but hes way overrated IMO. guys from around the same time period could destroy him (rakim, kool g) and they updated their flows and got better as they aged.
this right here is funny... Rakim and Kool G Rap (also check Big Daddy Kane and Grand Daddy IU) STILL rap the same fam... but that IS the '88 flow... it will rock in ANY decade.

oh... and this is the INTELLIGENCE that Capricornius just talked about... just listen to this and tell me who couldve wrote this... NO ONE!!!

not to mention, he was never stuck in the basic verse, hook, verse, hook song structure:

there are too many horrid rappers to have a top 1 but Gucci is pretty damn high though. to say this guy is even OK is giving him a kingdom for a bean.

I know I'm old now.

The young boys are disrespecting the Teacher!!!!!

"So what's the problem, it seems you want to be KRS2
From my point of view back track stop the attack,
Cause KRS 1 means simply one KRS
That's it
That's all
Solo
Single
No more
No less!!!!!!"

KRS 1 is one of the baddest MC's that ever blessed the mike. Dissin' KRS1 is like disrespectin Hip Hop itself. He's brought so much to Hip Hop that anyone who would ever call him overrated really has no appreciation for Hip Hop at all.

Someone already said it's just an age thing, using the whole Kobe Bryant vs. Micheal Jordan argument as an example, but when it comes to KRS1, it's a whole different thing. I've heard the younger kids sayin' Kobe is better than Mike, but I ain't heard anyone say Mike was garbage or overrated.

Like I said, I know I'm gettin' old.

What else can I expect from a generation that doesn't even know what "DROPPIN' SCIENCE" means?

The Future flopping of This Guy will go down in history...

i can agree with this. i like about 2 of his song, but he has skills none the less...thing is though, he is starting to make a lot of BAD moves. i.e. the young girls on stage, and most recently, SELLING A MIXTAPE THAT HAS BEEN FREE FOR THE PAST 7 OR 8 MONTHS.

i also agree with lil wayne. he doesn't have any classic album, he just now went plat on his what, 6th solo album attempt? plus dude is a straight coon and has yet to say anything relevant in his life

again, no disrespect to krs one. but still my opinion is hes overrated. hes good, just think hes not as good as people keep saying he is. its just an opinion, it doesnt mean i dont appreciate real hip hop, its just i have different standards about what makes a great MC "overall". and i disagree with the guy who said kool g and rakim rap the same since 88. thats quite false. co sign on that too short though, that dude is ABC elementary.
cheers

ok... this is 87 i believe:

this is 90-91

2009
the flow's still the same... just the tempo of the beat's different.

same with 88-89 G Rap:

95 G Rap:

05-06 G Rap:

its ironic that this thread is about "overrated" emcees... G Rap is the most UNDERRATED of all.

and these are the same cats Em and Jay looked up to... hence the statement "your favorite rapper's favorite rapper".

Lil wayne is the most overrated rapper ever. Drake is a close second. KRS is dope not the best but hes dope. Prodigy is dope too Idk how hes overrated. And Im surprised you would say DMX. He isn't marketable anymore but in 2000 DMX was the sh*t.

KRS One overrated???

ever heared "The Sneak Attack"?

Came with one of the best hiphop video's ever imo ("Hot")

Hot and Hush >>> ...

On topic:

I never fucked with BIG's music, just wasn't feelin his style
very overrated imo

And DMX is hot lava

Ruff Ryders were bigger than life at one point

Saying KRS is "overrated" is like saying Dr. J or Wilt Chamberlain are overrated. They wouldn't take over the league today playing like they did back then, but for their time they were the cream of the crop. Not to mention KRS has progressed hip-hop as a culture more than almost anybody else in the game.

As for who is the most overrated, I'm not even going to touch on Gucci Mane or OJ or Soulja Boy; they're doing their thing making money or whatever, but they're not MC's to me, they're just making a living off of being dummies.

50 Cent was way overrated to me since he blew up after all that Whoo Kid stuff he did. He and LL Cool J were able to get over just off of being rocked out, which is good for them, but both are corny in my opinion. I will say that 50's pretty funny today though and from what I've heard he's a real dude, so good for him.

Slik was right about Kool G Rap; EASILY the most underrated MC of all time next to Big L. Those are my two GOATs.

50 is on my list as well. He makes hits though and I can't front on the kid for that so it's hard for me to say he's too overrated. He's no lyricist and I think most people know that. So he's generally classified as he should be by most people...as a "hit maker".

My vote goes to Kanye West. He's the most average of rappers. He has hits, too, yes. But his beats carry his songs the most. Yet, he gets credit by some people like he's some lyrical monster. He's even been linked to the word "genius"...what the fcuk?!

His voice is annoying; his pattern is sub par; his lyrics are average; his head is big; his delivery sounds like he's rapping over the beat instead of "within" it.

He's just a fcuking mess and needs to shut the fcuk up and stick to producing. Really. (I know I'm not the first to say this)

actually, Weezy has sold millions before Carter3. Not all his albums went plat but this isn't his first plat album... The joint with Fireman on it went plat, eventually... that was the album he had recently dropped when he started his mixtape run, which was of epic proportions if I might add... No bodies recorded as many songs a Weezy in the history of recorded music... even Pac has been passed up by this guy... Weezy may not be liked by some but he should be respected by all...

BTW: Drakes not terrible I just don't see him reaching out far enuff to be relevant past teen girls and Metrosexual's...(now that I know what that word means I see'em lov'n Drake way too much).
