LOL at Mountain Dew Dropping Lil Wayne over Emmett Till Lyrics.... wtf

re

obviously they hired him for his popularity but you might take a look at what he does, im just saying... All these contracts come with a conduct clause anyway. I would have invoked the "no more guitar playing for the sake of mankind" clause in Wayne's case, personally but that is another story.

They should endorse Common and they wouldn't have anything to worry about.

Here's what happened... the workforce is getting younger so people that are more familiar with rappers and may have "grew up" on them at one point have made strides in the marketing world. Sort of how Bill Clinton had to defend himself about not inhaling and not messing up that blue dress. One of the higher ups was probably listening to Wayne at some party and thought "he could sell soda to kids... I'mma F'n genius!!!" and when Wayne says something people don't like it's as simple as saying "We'll look more responsible if we took this opportunity to drop him and give our product the image of being morally upstanding!" win / win.

It's like letting a fat chick be in charge of the kitchen because she can cook but not wanting her to eat anything.

"Our sales are great! Shaniqua sure can cook!"

"Ummm... sir... we're all out of biscuits and Shaniqua has crumbs around her lips and flour up to her elbows..."

Sometimes we put LMAO just because but for real...I LMAO out loud!

Well for one, Wayne was getting flamed for that line (and rightfully so)... but I think it more comes down to the fact that if Mountain Dew didn't get rid of him for that line simply, there company would catch heat as well. Or maybe they just needed an excuses to get rid of him.

A company shouldn't choose anyone as their spokesman, simply because of their popularity. The spokesman should be a good representative of the company's values as well as of the brand that they endorse. Remember how popular Roseanne Barr was in the 90s? Why didn't Nike sign her for an endorsement deal? She would have been the complete opposite of every value that Nike stood for.

Ciroc signs rappers because
1. Alcohol is already "edgy and dangerous" as a product.
2. Ciroc's target demographic is young males between 18-35.
3. Rappers are an excellent representation of both of these factors above.

Ciroc could have just as easily signed Jennifer Anniston if they wanted someone who's popular, but she's not a good representative of the demographic they're aiming for. Ultimately, MD was well aware of Lil Wayne's lyrics long before they signed him to an endorsement deal. Reebok was well aware of Ross's lyrics, long before they signed him to an endorsement deal. It's ridiculous that these companies suddenly act outraged by an "over the top" lyric, when these rappers were already talking about killing people, pushing cocaine, doing drugs, gangbanging, etc.

It's not JUST about popularity, it's about what sells. And Jennifer Aniston is nowhere near as popular as Wayne. And JA is an actress. What movie theaters sell hard liquor? These companies want to EXPAND the demographic and make MORE money, not "preach to the choir" and sell to the people that they already sell to. There's no such thing as "values" in a large corporation. They were not outraged by the over the top lyrics, they were outraged at the response from their customers. They could care less about the content these rappers release. They care about the response to the content.

It's the same reason damn near every movie on BET degrades the black community. People like that dumb ass shit.

because those 2 lines were publicly attacked by a bunch of people = bad press = damaging their image (of Mountain Dew).= lower sales

Rape victims and activists don't take that lightly.

The Emmett line is totaly F'ed up, not remotely funny. Like I'm making a punchline about how your son got beat to dead. How's that even remotely funny. Not to mention it involves the entire slavery / racism era with it, cause it was a racist act.

With Ross I definitely think he didn't mean it, it just came off wrong and wasn't thought out well.

He should have taken blame and apologised instead of making excuses and he might be 5 milies richer now.

He accidentaly condoned rape.
