'Justin Timberlake-My Love' Discussion:Synths,Samples,Beats etc.

Foreign, especially Indian, instrumentation is present through much of his early work (Xscape's "My Secret" remix, especially, with a rollicking sitar outro and Timbaland ad-libbing "Let's take a little trip...to India"), but was most successful and prevalent with Jay-Z's "Big Pimpin'" (1999), which borrowed directly from the song "Khosara" by Egyptian composer Baligh Hamdi. Missy Elliott's 2001 hit single, "Get Ur Freak On" from her third album, Miss E...So Addictive, was also likewise a smash, using a speedy dhol drumline typical of Bhangra. His borrowing from these cultures has resulted in mixed reactions, with many critics embracing his musical adventurousness and eclecticism and more esoteric, purist factions reacting catiously, and sometimes negatively. In an interview with Missy Elliott in RayGun Magazine, he mentioned a diverse base of influences, from UK Drum 'N Bass to Garage.

It's pretty sad actually when big name producers are bogled up with a specific sound, both for other producers and for them I think.

EY! SON! Don't dare to touch that pitchwheel while playing a set of strings, people could think you'd want to sound like Storch!

And now, that damn trancegate, which I spotted directly when Justin premieered, as being a sound from vanguard. To avoid further use of trancegated supersaws, I might suggest the VST-plug "mgTriggerGate" for those of you who hasn't already seen it.

Completely free, and you can slap that **** on whatever instrument you like, and achieve the same stuttering effect...genious? why yes it is!

Speaking of Timbo, which song contained the baby screaming? Was it "The potion"? :D

I have never gotten myself sure on where the hell that sound comes from, but man...that beat just blows me away.

i think it was Are You That Somebody by Aaliyah.. it had a screamin baby through out it

its from a drum break

It's crazy. My Love was a sample as well. I lost it but it was crazy dope how Timbo and Danja did it.

eq comprssion effects etc and good clean sampling from the outset

Examples please!!

If somebody could post a 'before' and 'after' audio clip, many of us newbies would really appreciate it!!

Thanks

Love and respect,

Hab!

Yo, to make your job a lil' bit easier, (I'm sure Timbo and Danjahandz has this on they Mac) but Reason has this matrix sequencer that arpegiattes (Spelled that worng) sounds automatically.

All U have to do is set how U want it to play.(Which keys, in this case Bminor, Cminor, blah blah) And press one key and you get that dadada-dadada-dadada, sound instead of daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa sound.

all what timbo does is sampled
he sampled from the arabian queen of raj Warda for a couple of tracks from Aaliyah just search on youtube
but most of his samples are hotter then the originals
timbo got this make-the-beat-hotter-then-it-is talent

Thanks 4 da tip yo!!!

Ur definitely the Kyng!!

I'm not trying to be like Timbo. And noone ever told me I was trying to sound like him. I like heavy weird percussion. Why? I am a techno, rock, and anime freak. I listen to more Anime than hip hop. Even J Pop.

Big Pimpin, he doesn't have to give the guy credit, if the guy doesn't want it. If Timbo pays him, and the guy says.. "nah it's OK". Then credit is due.

krushing, I know you are from Finland, but come on. He made one mistake, now everyone is ready to holler "all he does is steal and boast himself". It's not like that.

Timbo got some cool VSTs, or whatever they aren't telling people about.

How's it going my fellow producers??? Well, the album: Futuresex/Lovesounds is a milestone in itself, productionwise.. The amazing samples, the use of (or lack of) instruments and the amazing arrangement.. The same general compositional patterns presented very differently through its unique instrumentation and sounds thats bring a fresh feeling to the ear!!

Although many here like the older album ('Justified') better, but nobody can deny that this album is very unique in its sound, courtesy: Timbaland and Danja..

Now lets come to the point of this thread: 'My Love'

What is the starting synth intro?? I mean whats going on in that?? Whats the weird patch and how is it being used?? I'M SO CONFUSED?? I read in some article that Danja came up with that. I also know that the duo hardly use any midi for their synths. I've heard they've got their arsenal of synths...

Please give your thoughts and info

Thnks:cheers:
I didn't know stealing/borrowing from chiptunes music was considered something of a milestone. Hey the 80's and 90's called, the demo scene wants its music back.

OMG here we go with the whole stealing thing. Get over it. Go try and kill Talib before you try and attack Tim. Actually you should go all the way back in time and start killing.

how come timbo gets all the fame and that guy danja or w/e u never hear about him..... i would be mad if I was that guy....
neways back to the " my love" subject... how does he achieve that effect with the vocals in the first few seconds of the song...
it is so weird like some delay and chorus fx can u guys help me out?

I pulled the same sound out of my Albino 3 synth with a heavy gate on it Ive also pulled in off with Poizone in FL ...

Hey everybody!! Some brother in a previous post in this very thread revealed the synth trick! Just get this Vst called 'Vanguard'.. Then almost all its Gated effects are VERY similar to that synth-chord riff used throughout the song! Also I found a strikingly similar patch in Reason 3.0's Combinator.. Its a run. Can't recall the name, but, Vanguard's patch sound quality is way high than Combinator. A great Vst!

And who or what is Chiptunes? And who's Talib??

Love and respect,

Habi

ok guys im not asking about the gated synth i understand that part... im talking about the intro BEFORE the beat drops.. its something like a phrase off justin's chorus with distortion or sumthin on it... do you know what im talking about?

You guys need to listen to more and differnet kinds of music if you think this is revolutionary...
