I just got it 3 days ago. It's a decent program for the price. What sets this apart from others in this price range is the preloaded sounds and instruments. They are Fire! but this won't replace my FL or Reason but it's a good supplement to my setup. Do a search on Squidoo for a decent unbiased review.

Yo Micheal, besides the drums and percussion and typical strings etc, what type of original sounds does it have we never heard before and hot big is that file, 1gig, 2gig what?

Hey Danoc, believe it or not, it's actually less than a gig.

Think about it like this, it's hardware. A Motif XS only has 355 megs. A Fantom G is only 256 megs.

After taking a look at their site, I don't really see why I should sell my mpc and pay them $1000 for this stuff. Looks like a 90s nintendo.

recheargable battery, internal memory, effects, SD card... wow...

reminds me of Propellerhead.

i like the quickness of the beat thang stuff looks like u can just get right into creative mode without any tecnical considerations or without loaind sounds everything is there right away.

the image and looks is secondary to me but i dont mind the appearance as it seem very clear and self explanatory.

If I take a look at the market, I don't see a reason why someone'd pay $1000 for it.

Akai MPD32 & MOTU BPM Bundle Free MIDI Cable - $579

Akai MPC500 - $599

NI Maschine - $599

Akai MPC 1000 - $999

at this point, the Beat Thang is still vaporware, but if i go by the specs they have released for the machine, it more than holds it's own against ANY machine u just mentioned... especially as a standalone piece.

Coming from a Reason user I think I'll give the virtual a go fa sho

well, they are all different. Poise is just a drum sampler, you need a daw to use it in, so if you already have your daw rockin...then you can just integrate it easily.

beat thang virtual and maschine are really their own enviroments...even though maschine is already a vst/au plugin.

out of those three my choice is Maschine...it's the perfect blend of hardware control and software flexibility...

that said...I'm really excited about the beat thang hardware coming out.

what is the beat thang all about tho ? i know its some kind of beat machine but whats the purpose of it???

Bumpity bump bump bump. It's 2011 and we need more updated info about the Beat Thang Virtual on this site. It's selling for 99 in some places which is cheaper than the initial 150. The videos of it look pretty good and I think I read somewhere that it's already been updated to VSTi status, but I'm not sure. And does anybody know what the system requirements are for registration and running it?

What's the full update on this?

I can't recommend it at all. If you just want the sounds it comes with, then that's ok. Using it as a vst will crash Live. I emailed them and told them about it. I don't know if they ever fixed the problem.

Just in case anybody else is wondering what this is all about, here's more info from a vendor site:

A complete desktop beat-making machine and sampler in one for creating dope jams.

The Beat Thang Virtual Beat Production Software is unique in many ways but made to be very simple for you to understand. When it comes to hip-hop beat production, the Beat Thang beat machine software is one of the easiest-to-use software on the market. The days of paying $2000 - $4000 on a quality beat machine are over. You'll be surprised at what you get with the new Beat Thang Virtual and what it can do for you.

You get over 3000 bangin' professional soundz and an in-depth Kit and Instrument creator that allows you to access and edit drum kits and instruments quickly (even while the beat is playing). The Beat Thang Virtual creators spent two years recording brand new, high-quality drums, synths, strings, guitars, and more. You can also load your own sound library, plus you can record, sample, and chop up your own sounds (from a microphone, a WAV file, Internet, TV, or Radio).

Beat Thang contains a high-quality sampler & waveform editor that lets you zoom in on your samples for accurate chopping & looping. Sample your own sounds using your computer's built-in mic and line input, or sample any audio playing on your computer, including YouTube. That's right. You can sample acapella joints that are all over YouTube. It's so easy.

Another feature you'll enjoy is a powerful, easy-to-use 16-track realtime sequencer with individual bar lengths, built-in mixer, mute controls, solo tracks, and pads. Create patterns in real time using quantize, swing, and tap tempo, and then string them together in SONG mode. Beat Thang Virtual features a powerful 960 PPQ resolution that makes beat making easy and accurate for that keep it real feel (you can also downgrade to 96 PPQ for that classic, swingin' MPC feel).

With Beat Thang you can make beats using your mouse and computer keyboard or with any USB or pad controller. That's right. There's no limits, sonic soldier.

Another great benefit of this software is the ability to switch beats with virtually no load time. This allows you more time for the beat-making process and less time watching your sounds load. Many producers complain that other beat machine load times mess up music sessions and studio time. With Beat Thang Virtual, there is virtually no file loading time. Just point, click, and create.

Process your beats and sounds through a unique set of digital FX created by top programmers. BeatKangz kept the digital FX simple and easy to use, but they're as powerful as any that you'll see on your favorite samplers. Add 24-bit reverb, delay, flanger, phaser, pitch shift, old record effects, and much more.

When you're done, you can easily share your beats, samples, kits, and instruments with people in your camp. You can also export your songs, beats, or tracks as .WAV files in an instant or export in real time for a DJ style mix. Then, drag them into your favorite recording program (ProTools, Cubase, Logic, Sonar, Acid, Record, etc).

Beat Thang Virtual runs standalone on your Mac or your PC, loads up quickly, and doesn't take up much of your hard drive space at all. (The entire program—sound library and all—is about the size of one audio cd.) Beatkangz offers free instructional videos and help guides every step of the way. If that's not enough, you also get free tech support with real human beings who make music just like you. You also get free lifetime access to software updates—powerful new features like VST Plug-in mode, Auto Chop, Time-stretch, Step Sequencer, and tons more to come!

  • Over 3000 high-quality professionally mastered sounds
  • Easy-to-use Real-Time Sequencer lets you create patterns in real time using quantize, swing, and tap tempo and then you can string them together in SONG mode (Resolution is 960 PPQ to give you extra tight beats if you want them—or you can adjust the PPQ to 96 for classic MPC feel)

Like I said before, the best thing about it was the sounds. The sequencer is ok I guess, but there is no step/grid edit which seems ridiculous for a software sequencer.
