The guys that have been doing it for 20 years...when they were looking to get their foot in the door, there were already guys there that had been doing it for 20 years.

There's an entry level to EVERY JOB IN THE WORLD.

The guys who have been doing it for 20 years get the blockbusters. The entry level guys get the animated shorts...the indie films. The trailers. The C list movies. The straight to DVD films.

Basically you start at the bottom and you work your way up...like the guys that have been doing it for 20 years.

So I don't have to compete with the guys that have been doing it for 20 years, because just starting out, no one expects you to.

Nobody expects a STAR WARS movie score for MARTIAN MAYHEM 4! But they both need to be scored.

I've had years of classical training, not to mention formal music training all my life. Don't assume that all I do is this commercial/pop/hip hop stuff, it's but only a piece of what I do.

The point is you WILL be competing with the 20 yrs plus gang for everything, even the lowest releases. Just check any film forum and you'll see. The people doing the C list stuff aren't really less talented, they just haven't got their break, they're the competition. The only stuff entry level guys get is the unpaid work.

Most composers had to ghost write under someone more succesful for years before they went out on their own. That's a bit different to a few years of forced piano lessons.

Again...you get in, you start at the bottom and you work your way up....just like everyone had to...in EVERYTHING.

It's called ENTRY LEVEL.

It's no different than anything else.

I don't see what you're getting at. There's always gonna be someone better than you at EVERYTHING...there's always gonna be someone who was there first, and who's better.

But you get in, you learn, and eventually, you become their PEER...JUST AS GOOD AS THEY ARE, if not MORE SO.

That's how it works in every profession in the world.

@ Troup

It looks like they think you're expecting to just jump right into film composing but they arent realizing that you understand that you have to start from the bottom. You know you have to start from the bottom but they believe that you are just going to walk right in to film composing.

Instead of just saying, " Oh dawg thats a good idea, I wish you the best of luck" They persist on belittling your dream and trying to show you somehow that its too hard to do, In other words they dont want you to TRY. But it seems like you understand that it doesnt happen overnight.

I know I have to start from the bottom. My first goal is to LEARN the Art of Film Scoring...what it is and how to do it.

I've been studying alot of movies over the past few days...just listening to where the music comes in, which parts are scored, how the music moves with the characters. Studying things like character themes and how the music helps develop the characters.

I've also been studying different techniques. Like the way that John Williams creates theme songs, but Hans Zimmer really creates emotional textures with his music, that don't necessarily have a strong melody.

I've been doing the music my whole life, so I'm pretty familiar with that. But the art and science behind film scoring is gonna take a few years to pick up. Luckily, having spent the last 7 years just learning how to produce music gives me a big leg up...so it's not like I'm starting for SQUARE 1. More like 3 or 4. lol

I expect to start right at the bottom. Don't some work for free, scoring college kids projects, public service announcements, etc. Getting my feet wet, and learning how to do it.

From there, I start soliciting more and more complicated work, and start putting myself out there more, working myself up the ladder.

I don't expect to walk in the door and score films....because I don't know how to do that. But the fact that I don't know how to do it, is not gonna stop me from learning how to do it, and trying to get into it.

Every great person who's ever done anything, was once a noob who had no clue what they were doing.

what i find is that individuals that "doubts" others dreams usually have "LITTLE TO NO" accomplishments themselves....

individuals that have "accomplishments" look at "new" endeavors as a "natural progression"...

most individuals falls into to one of these two categories...

This is very true. Troup wants to advance to a new endeavor, his original endeavor, and it looks like he is up to the challenge. While you have detractors, telling him things he already knows.

So what if film composing is over saturated. So is the world. Does that mean you should stop living because there are too many people to compete with in life? Nonsense. :banghead:

Listen to the score from the movie Crash. Then listen to the score from Constantine. Then listen to the score from The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Not all movie scores are complex symphonies. Alot of them are made on computer, with VSTi's (Avatar comes to mind), inside recording studios.

Lots of pads, lots of textures, lots of ambient sounds. Lots of big hits for dramatic effect. And lots of simple piano and string melodies and harmonies. With a very loose structure, so you're free to do alot with a little.

I do all of that in my BEATS, today.

For me, I think the biggest obstacle is going to be learning how to read the scene, and compose the appropriate feel for the music, and sync it up just right. I can see that being something that takes years to really master.

I enjoy a good challenge! Plus this is the music that I love, so it should be fun!

i read that a decent part of the lord of the lord of the rings was done by vienna symphonic library. its just ****in expensive to do an entire score with a real orchestra, even on a multi million dollar budget

that library is ****in huge

What exactly have you done that's so special?

There's this little thing called reality that has a tendency to throw a spanner in even the most well thought out fantasies. If someone decided to do a u-turn and try and become a brain surgeon or nasa rocket engineer they'd be laughed at.

Then again blind confidence goes a long way in certain fields.

Anyway I'm done with this conversation. Troup good luck, if that's really your dream go for it. I honestly hope you succeed.

A U-Turn? This has always been my plan, literally from day one. I've been studying classical music and being trained in it since I was about 10 years old. So I don't understand why it's a U-Turn.

Just because YOU didn't know that's where I was ultimately headed?

If someone said "i'm gonna go be a brain surgeon", why is that something to laugh at? All they have to do is go to medical school, complete their residency, etc. They have to start from the bottom and work their way up.

It's called a CAREER PATH.

Same way with a NASA Engineer. You go to college for it, get a degree, and work your way up from the bottom.

I don't understand why it's so impossible for someone to do that.

Maybe he's not from America. Around here we have the opportunity to be whatever and whoever we want through hard work and diligence. It must be a FOREIGN concept.

A person can start being a lawyer and decide its not for him and go back to school to become something else. I've always thought that existed everywhere.

In a minor I'm attending we are going to go in depth about "soundscapes" and how/why they are very different from other musical pieces...

I'll keep you (whoever wants to score or just wants to know) up to date if you want via pm, just send me a message if you want the info.

I don't understand the saturation talk in this thread either.

What about women? The world is over-saturated with men, does that stop you from trying to get some a$$?

wait wrong question...

ummm what about a job?

What if Jordan thought there were too many basketball players... hell, he didn't even think there were too many baseball players, lol.

What's actually saturated? major placements? independent placements? mixtapes? TV submissions? ... rest assured when you think things are over-saturated and get discouraged, somebody else gets happy.

One less person to compete against.

Let's take it back to the women, I wish every dude that walks into a club looks around and says "It's too many dudes in here, its over-saturated..." and turn around and leave... YEAH! GTFO! cause I'm staying right in there ... looking for Ms. New Booty. (Well, that's what I used to do... can't do that anymore... I didn't care if it were 500 dudes and 50 women, I felt I could pull at least 2 or 3 of 'em - one for the night - 2 on deck)
