disclaimer: the following is just my opinion.
The "art" in music is at the two extremes. The extremely complex and the extremely simple. The stuff in the middle is what makes up pop music (Kanye et.al.) This stuff has mass appeal because it lacks artistic ability and it easy on the ears to people who thirst for the same old ****.. As long as you can shake your ass to it and it has some big name producer's name tagged on it, it's top ten (prime example, the new Snoop and Pharell song YUCK!). These guys may have cred. with all the 14 year olds, but any real musician knows that MTV plays nothing but teenie-bopper crap.
lol....maybe true
but like i said, all the top name producers hire really, really good musicians. kanyes tracks lack artistic ability? they are probably the most creative things to come out of hip hop in years! the snoop song? that pretty much pure hip hop right there.
you have to remember, hip hop as a musical style was never very intricate. its the simplicity and the cornucopia of different sources mixed into one song that makes it "hip hop". true, hip hop is not orchestral or chamber music, but neither is punk rock. punk rock is the same 2 or 3 chords in almost every song ever made.
punk rock is
less musical than hip hop if you put in your terms. bts its still a musical style that works well, especially to its fan base.
hip hop was born by discecting and mashing together music from different genres. when that stops, hip hop is officially dead. thats the wonerful thing about hip hop. it can practically be anything you want it to be. its clay in your hands, and the world wants to see your collage.
are art peices from MoMA less creative because they are made from non traditional mediums such as soda cans, or aluminum from a car door. NO! in actuallity they are more creative!
IMO you are far more creative if you can take something from 5 different songs, warp the sounds, mix in your own spice...and BAM have something that makes people bob thier heads!
for ex: many pop composers have workstations. most workstations have the same sounds, and presets (which what they mostly use). whats so creative about that. wow, so you can play a few notes in sequence. so can millions of others!
people like kanye CREATE their own sound libraries. and then play those sounds in a sequence. thats freakin creative!
in conclusion: if you can take some wood planks and make me a table (pop composers), thats nice. but if you can take those wooden planks and make me an airplane (kanye west), then im impressed!
(sorry for the rant
