You know what he COULD do if he was smart? He could package all that "knowledge" and sell it as a course... i can guarantee you there are a lot of music heads who are more than willing to pay $100-$1000 to learn mixing/engineering from Quik, but he rather get paid by a record label than going straight to the hungry, information buying market.

He could make more money selling his knowledge to producers than working with artists, but because he's one of those close minded, old school guys he's going to die with all those "trade secrets".

Any trade secret he knows can be found on Google or Youtube in a few minutes.

All of these og's are frustrated because they feel like they've paid their dues and should be able to sit back and just collect. Keyword being should. The problem with that thought process is that in the music industries' current climate you've gotta reinvent and reinvest to stay relevant and for some that's just hard to swallow....

He should just sell headphones and move on.. lol
 
It not just the "music Industry" that's a problem. It's everything that has to do with today's lazy and ignorant world (well I speak for just the U.S.) It's a lack of true leadership. A person who has worked on a job for so long should move up and keep moving up....how shit used to work. Because people cared more about that MUTHAFUUCKIN COMPANY than their buddies and buddy system. So instead of having someone who can learn something new (who wants to really learn) and still has experience (more important than simple knowledge you can get on google)....they would rather make promises to people who are more personal to them than business.

The outcome?

O.K. You have gas stations that are ran in a respectable order. You best believe when you grab a soda it doesn't have dirt and gunk and shit all on it. You best believe that everything is up to date or it won't be in the store no more because it doesn't sell fast enough. It feels nice when you go in there. Person really care about they shit.....like "fuuck yo life you came here to work and do your job and I cut the check...so if you break my MFing rules that I set to keep this place satisfactory for my customers......then your MFING ASS IS FIRED!!!!!! GOT DAMMIT!!!! You keep my rules and you will be (REWARDED AND UPGRADED).

O.K. Then you have those gas stations........never seen before juices that are very very outdated and you don't know it....and you wondering why you sick. All kinds of little specs and shit on all the drinks. Nasty looking slouchy ass people at the register with an attitude. But they ain't going to lose their job.....hell the owner don't give a damn himself.

DJ Quik is a lazy sum ***** too. As talented as he is....he shouldn't complain if people don't care about his personal selfishness......he should "GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT...GOT DAMMIT!!! Eminem can get it to....HE GONE LEARN. As selfish as people are today...you really want to give these selfish ass garbage good for nothing ass Americans......YOUR SELFISH ASS ALBUM...then complain on the industry? FOH EM.

So he expects upcoming artist to pay him 5, 6 figures?

Sounds like he lost his passion and only huge amounts of money can get him motivated to spend a couple hours working hard.

You're right. Breaking Artists is a good way to go if you have the means.
Just don't expect to see an initial return....
 
Your name don't mean shit anymore, if you wanna compete in today's world you gotta compete with what's coming out your speakers, not just rely on your name. You gotta stay hungry thru and thru because there's always gonna be someone hungrier trynna get where you're at
 
Got to give the people what they want. Plain and simple. People forget who are buying. And you may not be the type of artist for people to care about your life story. Expecially when you started out talking about getting pussy, gettin drunk, smokin weed.......now you want to get politically correct? Or make dance songs? Or make songs on selling dope?

The stupidity of people in the industry.

Give the people what they want from YOU................YOU....not what somebody else is giving the people. THEN you won't have to complain about an industry.

Dudes get to thinking too deep about shit and let people that don't know a damn thang accidentally do what they have known for years....or maybe they just want to pretend they know.

One thing about me....I know 90% of them don't know shit. They waiting on an "accident" to happen.

When it comes to his track record, he's been killing it for awhile. But like a lot of people have already said, he's gotta realize that everything can be found on the internet now. I respect his decision, but I feel like there's a lot more he could offer the industry if he stayed in.

Thank you for this post. I'm guilty. lol! Now that I have actually paid attention and read the article insted of assuming it was another person mad that things ain't the same anymore................I agree with Quik 100%.

What I think Quik trying to say REALLY is that he doesn't want his "SOUND" to become porn music. What I mean by that is that instead of his music being heard as great or his mixes as powerful.....it becomes a category for something else that gets drowned out. So a "better mix than everything out" sounds like "O.K this must be some new westcoast inspiring artist shit." A lot of that 70's porn music sound great..........but you ain't paying atttention to it. And it just sounded funny in 90's. "WahwikiwikiwikiwikiwikiwikiwikiWahwahwikikikik"...fuuck out of here with that porn music.

DJ Quik mixes > everyone elses by a mile. But do you really want to reference his mixes in 2013 -2014. Do you want to sound all GREAT when the norm seems to sound like it was mixed in a home studio? NO YOU DON'T. Because then "good" sounds out of place.

And that's what's been happening. Quik can't compete with them old white men who get to do WHATEVER THE HELL THEY WANT vs Quik with the technical shit. Them old white men FINALLY learning all of these plug ins and what to do with them. Quik? Still behind a SSL............smh. And them old ass white men finally listened to them gearslut wet behind the ears dudes who never seen a console.

Just saying though of course. I don't know what the hell Quik doing. Just a thought.
