Could you score a movie if given the oppotunity?

Scoring movies is more than dark ominous tones or backgound music sometimes it involves workin with a full orchestra, personally i liked how Giorgio Moroder scored Scarface!!

I would be interested in doing it but it seems kind of daunting. I don't really like the idea of doing half and half. If I was to dive into that I would have to dive into that fully. I really think people should have respect for the craft and study the game before diving in.

I really love the scores that aren't noticeable til the second time around watching it. One of the best scores to me was The Dark Knight for that reason. Wasn't alot of musicality it was just certain notes making us feel we were in Bruce Wayne's nightmare. I love scores like that because you feel them more then hear them.

But as a Hip Hop producer there is a lot to learn from movie scores. They can be 1000 pieces of music or they me be 1 single note. It doesn't matter how technical it is, the only goal is to get the artist's point across to the consumer.

the score of a movie is so unheralded meaning it doent get the recognition it deserves but its a big part of the total package of a movie esp the scores of horror movies with the piano keys playing or the string instruments making eery soundscapes

There is a vst for everything. Real score composers are already running their mouth about a certain N.I product the same way we run our mouths about FL studio. Technology has made things so easy that a person who has made hip hop beats for 6 months can also place a score with a few clicks of a mouse. As long as you are musically inclined you are good now a days to do anything with ease.

It's rough out here on the experienced but it's fair. It makes the experienced folks have to step their game up when these greedy ass companies try to set things up for "consumers" to be in the same arena as them...the easy way.

I'm cool with the grind...get it on because it's there. Just don't act like you special or deserve some kind of trophy when you use these products as if you can give more advice than a classically trained composer who has not one score placed anywhere........that's the thing that upsets me. People want credit for being the best at something they don't even know a third about. Saw a vid a while back with a guy who placed ONE score some where. He had the personality of a know it all when it came to movie scoring....(like I'm the teacher and you all are the students). Not once did he mention his training or schooling. He spent 90% of the video talking about how he loves East West stuff vs other products. It wasn't even an East West promotion video. Stuff like that man

Rant over.

LoL. That's not christian like.

A big one for people that do scores is East West products. At least people that needs orchestral and strings.

I actually want to get into movie scores eventually. I love how they convey emotion with sound coupled with action or anticipation.

I purchased IK Miroslav Philharmonik a while back. I made a few simple orchestral pieces.

I would never say that I could score a movie, but I could create a few fluff pieces for moments where simple instrumentation would work.

Working with those sounds is cool.

what you made would be perfect for some of the mini-indie movies on youtube those 10-30 min. movies
I got three days off in a row coming up and I'll be working on "cinemantic soundscapes"

It's not going to be too difficult so long as you understand the instruments you are writing for and know enough theory to correct the score your software spits out, everything else comes down to talent.

People tend to think that EVERY film score was made with an orchrestra. A LOT of film score is made by one person on a few pieces of equipment. I'm not downplaying it all, movies like Inception had CRAZY freaking scores but let's say a comedy film has a much simpler one.

If offered a lot of money? Yes, I wouldn't know what I was doing but I'd sure as hell learn and I'd have something acceptable by the deadline.

I think just about everyone on here could at the very least pump out a cheesy training video sound track or make some porno music....bow chicka bow wow.

Even movies like Inception and Batman are made in programs/computers. I was watching a Hans Zimmer video the other day and was surprised but at the same time glad to see that he sits in his little room with a few keyboard/synthesisers, all of his monitors, watches the movie and plays around with sounds just like a regular bedroom beatmaker would do lol. Of course the guy knows how to write/compose music so the process is a little bit more advanced but overall it was cool to see that he embraces technology.

Sure is alot of these guys seem to at least do most of the work this way
cheaper and easier to meet deadline

^^^good piece of information Zonic

I would make it work.. im pretty confident that i could do some crazy shit.. i kinda like having a project to work on with deadlines.. pumping out beat after beat gets boring sometimes so a movie would be intresting.. give me a scene, i'l come with some creep music LOL

Here is a good question.

Do you feel you can be "trusted" for a particular score?

It becomes no different than trying to get a track to Michael Jackson new album and documentary. The most anticipated album and movie of this decade coming out in 2015. Will they take a chance at you for this? Or will an open door from someone else (Teddy Riley, Jam and Lewis, ect) who is looking for a particular sound in which you can provide be a solution? O.K.........how do you prepare yourself to even be close to "that door". Why would he choose you over Hit Boy, Mike Will?

Shit ain't just a walk through the door. Why should they trust you over the competition? A Jan Hammer type dude who knows how to put sounds with imaginative visuals verses some guy who likes presets? Your inspiration is Lex Luger.....yet your comp have Jan Hammer and Hans Zimmer posters. You listen to Rick Ross latest singles for enjoyment....they enjoy listening to
in a different way than you enjoy listening to Rihana's music.

Do you really have a dynamic enough mind to handle what will be thrown at you? Do you actually think you will have a dynamic enough product that will not get laughed at.......even your rough mix is not an excuse.

You have a lex luger 808........they have the gm 808s. You never in your life thought that you would actually need those cheesy gm 808s.

If you serious about it, you will try and learn everything your competition already knows. Then you will go through the trials and errors.

You may luck up on something that somebody feels is perfect for what they are doing. But don't lower yourself as a person waiting on that lucky moment......if you serious.

DAMMIT JAN HAMMER!!!! Now I want a Ipad so I can get the fairlight app......I'm gonna get you Jan....IF IT'S THE LAST THING I DO!!!! whowhowhoheeeheeheehayhayhayhayhahahahahahaaaaaaaaaa!! (Gargamel laugh)

Excuse me yall. I'm in a silly goofy ass mood. lmao!!!

I'm a sucker for that type of sound design lol, specially the intro and just the overall feel of that piece.

Sound design is one of the most overlooked things in movies from the viewers perspective. We all pay attention to what we see but aren't really consciously aware how sound dramatically enhances visual experiences.

I'm in awe when i watch movies or commercials (specially commercials by Nike) and video games who go all out with sound. That shit is beautiful lol.
