I have started other threads about DJ Paul & Juicy J on this board, but I have to give credit where it's due. In the oversaturated hip hop market I have to give props to the artists that stick to their guns and do what they do. These guys just kill me with each new release. I was just listening to the new Lil' Wyte album "The One and Only" and I'm not a particular fan of Lil' Wyte and his whole style, but Paul and Juicy killed several tracks on this one. Specifically "It's On" and "Choppa on Da Back Seat." They're just really great at the whole southern sound. The synths are great, they sample, they're drums are great, the bass is always unbelievable.

My questions is this. Who does what out of the two of them? I listened to both their solo albums: DJ Paul's "Vol.16 For Da Summa" (2002) and Juicy J's "Chronicles of the Juice Mane" (2002). I thought I might get the answer listening to their two different styles, but I'm still left wondering. It seems like Juicy J might be bigger on sampling, while DJ Paul is more into using keyboards and that kind of thing. Once I found out DJ Paul has one short arm, I had to question their technique even more. Does the Juice Man play keyboards? Their's just a lot of mystery surrounding their production. I haven't seen any videos of them making beats. There are some clips of them on "Adventures In Hollyhood", but I've got to know. Any insight on this would be appreciated.

Well both Juicy J and DJ Paul are known as the super producers they call themselves. They have there own sound thats not like others. I listen to almost all there material before they even hit it big..albums like Prophet Posse and triple six underground. There production is not mysterious as you think..if you heard those albums. They use alot of drum sounds more than synth notes. There production is nothing special..its the bass that makes them hard. They always have booming bass. The only album that showed there weakness was what they did with Fiend on the "The head bussas" that album was so poor and the tracks sounded the same..nothing ear catching. That same production carry on to there past albums. They recycle alot of there beats..just with different twist.

What is mysterious to me is who does what out of the two of them. There isn't a lot of info and no videos as to who is doing what (playing keys, sampling, etc.) out of the two of them.

i've wondered this too, and i've also wondered how the hell DJ Paul is a DJ with that short arm???

Yes the album is weak, but "where them ******* hang" is one of my favourite beats of all time. The 2 have a very high output so not every beat can be a genius work. I think their beats are kind of simple if u compare them to e.g. timbaland.

They have a formula that works and they always add a little to it. I like them much better than Timbaland, but that's my opinion.

i honestly think.. Dj Paul does a lot of the bells, dark pianos, nd the drums, the strings.. while Juicy J finds the samples, chops them up, nd stuff like dat

Good call. I always thought that too, that's why the short arm kind of threw me off. I guess a lot of those keyboard lines can be played with one hand though. It's also worth noting that a lot of the stuff that I thought was played on a keyboard was actually sampled from horror movies and that kind of thing.

to start with, this a good thread cuz yall talking about two of my fav producers of all time.....i recall seeing juicy j playing the keys on a video on the net i believe if that answers anyones question.

Yall crazy saying that headbussaz album is weak...thats when Paul was at his best(rapping wise). I was looking in the Mystic Stylez booklet and Paul was credited for the keyboards...so I'm thinking, this dude is a one armed keyboardist???

Paul & Juice are my favorite producers ever and the fact that I cant see them making a beat kills me.

Them boys thorough, they're underground albums are hard as hell. That Dj paul underground 16 thorough, Club Memphis thorough, dont even let me talk about project pat layin da smack down, and mista dont play got some of the hardest production they've ever done on it, and plus when the smoke clears is a southern classic hands down. Anybody who say 3 6 aint tight is tripping.

Oh yeah Dj Paul is the better producer and rapper out of the two.

chapter 2 world domination- anyone out there. i love that beat mainly because of the intro b4 the verse.

They made so many good beats before they got big. If they started a few years ago they wouldve been huge.

I Dont know who does what. I guess its just like a Collab thing... they split erthang 50/50 anyways. I usta be a big fan but lately their last albums been kinda weak cept for my man Frayser Boy, he always come wit heat.

I heard there was a video of the making of "Diamond in the Back" (Ludacris) but I've never seen it...

About the who does what, From this interview, Paul makes it sound like he does the production himself.
Pimp always loved my production. That's why he asked me to produce "International Players Anthem". Matter-of-fact I got some beats over here that I recorded for his solo album but he never got a chance to hear it.

He does MOST of it. He does pretty much all their sampling. And his solo underground disk are the shyt.

man i'm glad to see some other producers like paul and juice as much as me, but how many of ya'll know about murderers and robbers album?

anyways, from what i understand juicy's pops is a preacher (lol) and juice knows how to properly play the piano, plus everytime i've seen a shot of them in the studio juice is at the keyboards, so i'm guessing he does a lot of the keys, also i know that its juice doin all the scratching and sammpling, with his "good hand" weighing him down i would say paul prolly does the drum sequencing, and dj paul also does the tracking of the beat.

either way their my biggest influence for music i never try to sound like them but they are who made me wanna make music.
in my opinion, they are definately the best producers ever, they find some of the best samples (int'l playas anthem, get the **** out my face, test my gangsta), they have some of the best string riffs ever, and of course all of they're songs (w/ exceptions) knock pictures off the wall.
sry bout the long post : )

Paul does nearly all their sampling

^^^ for real? I was just sayin from what i know. I didnt read through all of the posts.

did you find out from reading credits? Just a speculation but maybe paul picks out the samples and juicy scratches/juggles it, maybe paul just does the sampling through an MPC, i dont know, i'm blowed though, bout to go lay some **** down, later.
