I was listening to some older stuff and I came across some Aaliyah music. After listening, I wondered if she really was one of the forerunners for the likes of many female artists today. I feel that if Aaliyah were alive she may have had a decent amount of limelight next to Beyonce. What do you all think?

Aaliyah didn't reach her full potential......she was on her way to becoming an international Superstar.

agreed, i cant really stand beyonce, tho shes a talented singer, im just not a fan.aaliyah on the other hand, i could listen to her and enjoy every minute.

are you serious? shed blow beyonce out the water man, just like dude said she never reached her full potential, when she passed she was in the, i guess you can say "transitional stages" she wouldnt have been a diva like mariah, but def on her level....way past beyonce

I agree. Not to take anything away from Beyonce but Aailyah didn't reach her full potential. I honestly think Aailyah would have had alot of spotlight.

Didn't Missy and Tim grow apart after aaliyah Died? If the three of them were still together the whole landscape of Hip-Hop and R&B might be different today.

Just like the whole "if Biggie was still around" discussion, if Aaliyah was around you wouldn't have more than half of these little jokers out here. Beyonce and a few others would be around, but though B is a far better singer, Aaliyah would wipe the floor with the current crop of female artists. She was only just beginning.
Peace

It's possible she could of fell off. We can't really say what would of happened. If Michael Jordan didn't go to baseball he could of won at least two more rings. Just an example.

Beyonces not even that good of a singer.

Beyonce likes to sing and pretend she has the most powerful singing voice..

Aaliyah was more of a soft singer.

R.I.P Aaliyah

besides, someone mentioned on here, i think it was deranged, but said that she doesnt even write most of her stuff

definately wouldve been up there with the best.....no doubt in my mind.....

if aaliyah was here right now i dont know if ciara would have as much fame right now. aaliyah and beyonce are two seperate singers. aaliyahs the more dance and sing...not a whole lot of "giving it all" i guess u could say as in like just singin ur lungs out.

It doesn't matter whatsoever that B doesn't write most of her stuff in this discussion. Aaliyah didn't write any of hers. Many of the great solo artists in history neither wrote their own songs, and most didn't play an instrument. Nowadays some consider it a sin to do neither. Why write your own songs when you stink at it? My opinion, at least.
Peace

The thing here is....vocally beyonce is better than aaliyah was...now thats not to say that aaliyah never could have been better but like said before she never got to her full potential cause she was so young..but on the other hand beyonce has no clue how to make good music..i mean comon shes wasting her talent over simple beats and songs that are just plain disposable..Now Aaliyah knew exactly how to make CLASSIC music that everyone loved and thats why overall shes better to me

just my views though..

u guys are missing the point completely...the question was would she still have limelight...the answer is absolutely....who wouldve been better is a ridiculous debate because one of the people has passed away....so her full potentioal will never be known....i think its dissrespectful and irrellavant to compare.....

I really don't think aaliyah would have been as big as beyonce. it's 2 different careers. aaliyah wasn't as extravagant or flamboyant as beyonce is. A got that laid back style and B got that aggressiveness that has got her to where she is today.

beyonce tries to force an above arevage voice into a powerhouse voice. sometmes it works but most times it don't. also, aaliyah was sexy by being herself and not trying to be all hoochie mama like B do. aaliyah had a more natural sexiness and sound and a more laid back feel to her music. beyonce is trying to be in everyone's face throw it all out there.

I like aaliyah's stuff way more than B because it was cool, kick back and had that vibe. I think beyonce would still be more popular than aaliyah because beyonce throws herself out there like that and more about the marketing and business and the MONEY!!!! aaliyah didn't come across like that. she came across more like it was about the music and the style and everything she did, she did with class.

LOL why do people create these dumb ass threads?!!!! aaliyah vs beyonce?! LMAO aaliyah is the best and always will be well shes one level below mary j. but still thats like saying who is better Pac or Ludacris

I shouldn't really comment on the "who woulda been bigger" debate cuz I am incredibly biased since Aaliyah is one of my favorite performers of all time (if u dont believe it, click the link in my sig.) In what market? Movies or music, they both ventured into the film arena and I think Aaliyah coulda def went far in that area of entertainment. Beyonce? Not so much.

Musically speaking, I liked the direction Liyah was goin in artistically. I woulda have LOVED to see that collabo with Trent Reznor come to be, but alas.... I read a few comments on Aaliyah's vocal ability. If u copped the AALIYAH album, then u know she stepped her vocal game up. Creatively, the last album was refreshing, and I think that woulda def continued. The real question is, would the "popular" hip-hop/ r&b scene been able to appreciate Aaliyah's slightly-outta-the-norm vision as much as Beyonce's mainstream appeal??

Tho she was a great performer, quite charming with that girl nextdoor kind of vibe...Aaliyah was pretty much a studio singer....Vocally Beyonce would crush her......she would be a star yes..but not too many can hold a candle to Beyonce in this day and age...No im no Beyonce fan...hard to tell riight? :D I think she is a bit over hyped...but you will never catch her pullin a Latoya Jackson...she sings live...and she sounds just like the record....

Its really hard to say but she definetly was set to become one of the majors. All in all I think they are quite different as artists but both were driven and had talent. I personally liked Aaliyahs stuff better but beyonce has done so much now that its hard to compare the two.
