How Monster "screwed itself out of a fortune" by inking a deal with Dr. Dre

I don' get the screwed label? Dre gave them name recognition and an endorsement from the greatest producer in hip-hop history. I mean its not like monster was ****in apple, introducing some new device that will change your life. Like the article stated there's only so much money u can make from speaker cables. Just about everybody on FP knows that beats are not the best when it comes to studio quality cans, but I just had an discussion yesterday with a young cat (non-music) about how he thought beats were the best. Ya the deal might have been shady, but that's the biz.
You have to ask do the headphones become as popular without Dre/Iovine?

edit: I hadn't read the whole gizmo art. So I can agree that monster got screwed out their company, not clear about the role the Lee's played, but it is badd to lose your whole company with not future profit.

It's a bad deal because Monster end up giving up most of the profits while doing most of the work in the designing of the headphone. And then afterwards Monster lost it's patents to the headphones and had no say in when Beats got sold to HTC and currently makes no profit from the Beats by Dre line. It's a legendary bad deal. One of the worst deals ever actually.
 
Beats by Dre are the most overrated headphones to date.

exactly, they didn't lose the company, they just lost beats by dre patents.
 
Monster ****ed themselves over. Why in the world would you create a line of products without even landing the account yet? It almost looks like they were trying to impress Iovine and it backfired.
 
Monster getting pwned like that is mad funny and well deserved, remember Monster was running around trying to crush any company that used the word Monster (such as Monster Mini-Golf) like the word was their exclusive property, they also threatened some other cable company with legal action based on the delusion that only they should be able to add connectors to the end of a length of wire or some such shit, but then ironically they hand over everything on an silver platter to Jimmy who knew exactly who he was dealing with, I mean when you look at the stupidity of Monster's legal side it's obvious that they are not particularly bright.
 
Wow. Thats rather unfortunate. Good products though nonetheless.

just FYI, there's a link on the labdummy page to the rest of the article. You can read the rest of it to see where Monster lost out.

but after reading that, you can really see how much of a business it really is. If you aren't prepared to do business with these pros, you too can find yourself on the outside looking in.

and the company beats audio. so since dre inked that deal with htc. monster has not been able to profit off of their own idea at all. they did all the leg work just to have someone else win the prize
 
i feel sick to my stomach reading that....

I want to feel sorry for monster but like someone else pointed out, they screw little guys all the time... and who da hell inks a deal that big with NO legal council?
 
SMH! Didn't Dre get fkd over at Ruthless and Death Row ... It's a dirty game, you have to get the best that you can out of every situation.

I once dropped into a friends house an saw her little boy eating his vegetables out of a happy meal box, so I asked her "what's with the happy meal box?" and she told me "He will eat all his vegetables if he thinks it's McDonald's but if I put it on a plate he won't touch it" funny thing is some adults are equally as credulous in regard to buying things based on the perception that what they are buying is the best.

but did they really skrew themselfs though? i mean, they came up like a mofo, and i really dont see energy drink doing too much in the future. so they did what they could in the right now, those things will kill you slowly lol they so fukin unhealthy and people are finally waking up to that fact. i think the sells will slow they roll soon anyways so if anything dre helped them beat out the other guys in the right now. I dunno though.....
