I said it once before in this thread, if the price tag will set you back or you don't have a very serious plan hold off.

I am a huge advocate of a well written business plan. Search (google/wiki) business plans and learn how to write one with all types of contingencies and details, including a financial section.

Look at this this way, even if you write a simple two or three page business plan I am positive that puts you ahead of 90% of people with the same dreams.

There is even a free source of retired executive folks you can help you if you are that serious:

Take a business course at a community college, even if it is just one. I have a bunch of degrees / accreditation's and crap but I still improve myself on the education tip.

^ do you do electronic music?

On a philosophical level were are all doing electronic music. But I produce techno, dance, hip hop, rock, and all types of stuff which I use keyboards, synths and samples. I also play about a dozen or so "real instruments" including electric and acoustic Bass, Guitar, Trumpet, Sax, Trombone, and very little and horrible violin (I can fake it). I was classically trained on woodwinds then learned the others on my own.

I forced myself into laying my own stuff because who wants to get raped all the time playing for sample use. I say everyone including drummers and DJ's HAVE to learn to play keyboards and basic chords on it...the keyboards (i.e. samplers/virtual instruments) are the future of production. Do scales till your fingers hurt. Again back on the education theme, take lessons from a piano teacher...even if you can only afford a few. Dr Dre even started taking piano lessons.

The future is about having multiple talents, that makes you more marketable.

still havent really gotten the hang of it
but i do metal as a side/personal thing
learning basic piano as one of my classes in high school
playing on my sisters casio keyboard
other than that i have been playing guitar since i was ten
can do a bit of violin
and im about to get my first set of turntables this christmas

Man, I'm too jealous right now... I knew I shouldn't of waited, now I gotta wait even longer. Maybe the new year will be the right time. Income tax time might be the golden hour for me...
Wish me luck.

capitalism at it's finest.

an overpriced keyboard with a built in daw. nothing against reaper btw. i just find it hugely ironic that they chose it.

First part of comment your read all my post(s) above...Just not true

Now I was getting into Reaper long before I even heard of Open Labs...Just like I was also into SAW studio for years. Just like I was a Beta Tester for Steinberg before most of you guys parents went to high school. Innovative companies are relatively easy to spot early on in development...Reaper is still in its infancy yet it kicks most DAWS in the butt. I've seen bug/revision updates as quick as twenty minutes! Reaper has the potential to be a real game changer...It is one of the fastest growing apps in the technology of DAW's (I have stats to back up what I am saying). Open labs was just smart to see what I am seeing and include that app (Reaper).

i have mad love for reaper and one of the reasons i love it is the relationship between the developer and userbase.

i just think the open labs stuff is a rip off. that's just my opinion. obviously countless others disagree outright with me because they have many fans.

I have nothing but love and respect for how you feel.

I relate my opinion to how I relate to cars, for years and years I thought a Benz was the biggest waste of money, overpriced and all that. I was like there are tons of cars that do the same exact thing. Then my wife forced me to get one...now unless I am in one of those I feel like I am wasting money money and not getting the BEST value for my dollar (Short term and long term).

With that said, and how crazy the economy is at the moment a lot of people of every income strata have to make some really though choices on where and when to spend money. I'm even test driving the Audi's and VW's, and I make nice money.

I HAVE to make a living with media production so I can't cut corners on anything there.

So in summary spend a good amount of time with the OL's and see if your opinion changes (more than a passing glace at a music store). I have no vested interest at all if a person buy's one, it's just my opinion that the product(s) are a dream come true for professionals (and even future ones).

Teddy Riley Edition 2010 Neko/Miko XXL Insane!!!

I'm in LA, and open labs just had a party to introduce the Teddy Riley Edition Niko XXL. This is the most insane piece of equipment in the world today. Too much power, Too much processing. You are right about the haters but people are reactive to prices. And I understand in this economy. I feel blessed to have a business with clients which makes it easy to purchase equipment. The DBeat is dope too, not a spoksman for open labs but they are at the top of the game right now..plan and simple. We have two XXL's, the LXD and the Dbeat...worth every penny!!

Miko lxd

How were you creating music before? In what ways has it helped your workflow? And if I can ask what did you pay for your miko? I've been using using hardware (mpc and various keyboards) over the years with protools and in the last two years I've been on Logic Pro.

Thanks!
