**Eminem's Relapse BEATS [Review]**

Disclaimer: This isn’t just another thread about Eminem. I want to get into some in-depth conversation about Dre’s production/instrumentals on this album.

I want to start out by saying that I wasn’t one of the people praising this album in the other Relapse threads. I was actually let down when I first heard this album all the way through. This album has grown on me big-time. I’ve probably listened to it beginning to end about 10 times now and I pick up on more things everytime I listen to it again.

I wanted to start with some comments about individual beats (without touching on lyrics at all). I'll list some comments on what I like or don’t like about individual tracks and hope you do the same…

3am- My favorite part of this beat is the hi-hat/shaker pattern.

My Mom- Can’t stand listening to this song because of the verses and especially the chorus. Don't really like the beat.

Insane- Can’t stand listening to this song because of the lyrical content. The eerie strings are okay.

Bagpipes in Baghdad- My favorite part is the eerie string/whistle/synth sound that comes in at the end of every other bar.(Not sure exactly what it is…can anyone describe/name this sound/instument?)

Hello- The kick drum is amazing in this song, also love the clap.

Same Song & Dance– The dark/quiet female choir throughout the song in the background is my favorite part. It sounds more like an individual rather than a choir. Whatever it is, I LOVE this patch….probably something EWQL…anyone know?

We Made You- Nothing that sitcks out that I really like in this beat. Co-prod by Em.

Medicine Ball- This is the "hardest" beat on the album IMO. My favorite part is the sound that comes in at the end of every 4 bars (sounds like a guitar with a nice effect and a lot of reverb but I’m not sure). (Can anyone describe/name this sound/instument?)

Stay Wide Awake- Nothing addictive about this beat.

Old Times Sake- I dislike this beat very much.

Must Be The Ganj- I dislike this beat very much.

Déjà vu- My favorite song on the album. I love the acoustic sounding picked bass (this might even be the lower notes on a regular acoustic guitar. I love the clap…it sounds so FULL yet soft.

Beautiful- I love the grimey hi-hats and sloppy/slowed pattern. I also like the singer that Em brought in during the beginning and end and the live electric guitar…gave it the classic blues feel. Prod by Em.

Crack a Bottle- I’m sure this was covered in enough other threads.

Underground/Ken Kaniff- The epic strings.

hello- scratches, strings, guitar, screaching type noise...everything flows so well

same song and dance- the bass is dope as FU(K, the whole vibe is sick

medicine ball- i hate this beat lol, I dont see why people like it..melody bores me

stay wide awake- not really feeling this beat at all, I really dont like the drums

insane- this beat grew on me, one of my favorites
 
I don't think the beats fit Eminem very well. Don't get me wrong Dre is amazing and his production on the album is solid, not to mention it's good to see an artist and a producer teaming up for a whole album. However, Em was always good on the non-theatrical, stripped down beats that didn't steal the spotlight. IE: Kill You, Just Don't Give A ****, Marshall Mathers, Brain Damage, Role Model...
 
3AM - If you listen closely there were a lot of instruments that could have been brought out more in the mix.

My Mom - I think the LIVE horn stabs make this song.

Insane - The production there is live. One of Dre's best this decade. F what you heard

Bagpipes from Baghdad - It's cool. The melody is nice. The middle eastern stuff has been done to death.

Hello - The stereo kicks with the reverb is fresh. I like that. Nothing special about the melody though.

Same Song and Dance - in the skit before it, the girl was running though some puddles or something...sounds like he integrated that in the beat. Listen again and give me feedback if you agree.

We Made You - Meh...the flow fit perfectly to the swing of the beat though.

Medicine Ball - Nothing special here...good beat, but kinda meh after a while, until the orchestra accompaniment at the end.


Stay Wide Awake - Didn't sound like a Dre beat at first...I like the guitar/orchestra when the bridge comes on. Em's flow was well produced as well.

Old Times Sake - Sounds like something from 2000. Meh.

Must Be the Ganja - Kind of eerie sounding, it's good though...

Deja Vu - Although it's my favorite song, it sounds like it should've been on Jay-Z's Kingdom Come album. Dre's gonna use that snare/stereo clap dynamic to death

Beautiful - Eminem produced this one. It's okay. It does the job. Not phenomenal beat-wise.

Crack a Bottle - It's okay. Just not up there with my faves.

Underground - This beat messed me up when I first heard it because it sounded like everything was off beat and off meter. Once Em started rapping I finally caught it. The fact that he played with people's ears is genius.

You're right...the footsteps in the rain are the exact same tempo and rythym as the splashes/claps he uses as quiet hi-hats and the loudest/longest splash for the clap sounds like a splash barely layered with an actual clap. Good ear!

deja vu was originaly crack a bottle..

peep the guitars and the crack a bottle sample...chord progression ect..

:bigeyes: The chord prog is the same on the guitar in Deja Vu as the horns and piano in Crack a Bottle.

I looove must be the ganja beat, that constant hitting synth or whaterer it is is so hypnotic.
 
3 AM = Everything from the choir to the keys fits the song perfectly.

My Mom = Decent beat. Like the drumrolls every 8 bars.

Insane = Insane beat. Kind off makes the stepdad rape thing listenable.

Bagpipes from Bagdad = Beat completely outshines Em.

Hello = Love the bouncy drums, the scratching and the guitar. All fits in well.

Same here, that's beat is incredible. In fact all the beats on this album set a whole new standard in Hip Hop. If you're listening to this album in a proper studio, it sounds sooooo much bigger than anything else out there. Once again Dre raises the bar. HUGE!

Relapse is a ****ty verson of the slim shady LP. Eminem's flow/voice doesnt even sound right.

I don't know what you're listening to but his flow/voice sounds better than any of the previous albums imho. That is one aspect that I will say outshines all previous Em albums.

Seems nobody mentioned the bass pattern on Same Song & Dance

That square synth bass catches my attention every time I hear it
 
This will be considered classic, its basicall a Em featuring dre on all beats album
I think dre didnt try to over do it on alot of trax he just put em out, and Em picked out what challenged him.
Medicine Ball is my fav beat, the drums are hitting hard.
other than that, the old times sake, Ganja beats, Insane are hot

could name more like 3 am but I like the simple melodies that stick out. Its amazing what Em did 2 the beats even though he says some crazy stuff his flow is more what I paid attention to.
 
album is garbage you people dont know music sorry

only track that I liked (instrumental wise) was 3 AM.

So, I just found out that "We Made You" was produced by some guy named Doc Ish. So, the credits will probably read "Produced by Doc Ish; Additional Production by Dr. Dre" because Dre be taking the tracks and beefing them up by having his musicians replay them and he mixes them down.
 
Also, do you guys think that the CD Mastered version will bring out those nuances that we think would make the songs better? I'm thinking the leaked version is mixed, but not mastered...
