omg! its fatal. from the symptoms i'd say you have the terrible and most feared...

slip and matt disease.

see a doctor qucik. with the right drugs caught quickly enough - u might live until Madonna's next single release.

no that's not irregular. It depends on (if you're going by the bass kick) whether or not it's a straight kick or it may be reversed or still a kick but not just a simple "boom" it may have more to it and all these factors weigh into how easy it is to beatmatch it in the headphones. Also the song may have a lot going on in it, or it may contain an offbeat hi-hat or clap beat.

yeah, offbeat - or heavily shuffled hat patterns etc piss me off, but sound great when u get em in.

Worst tune i ever had - the person that made it must have been braindead, because the drum loop had a slightly too large gap at the end before looping again - if u know what i mean - only milliseconds - but certainly enough for it to be pretty much impossible to mix and dance to. out the window goes that one.

hahahahhahahaha!!!!:D
LoL

I find myself sometimes having some trouble if track #1 has a "BAP" sounding kick drum and track #2 is more like "whrrrrummmppp" on the kick (a la Basement Boys), it confuses me a little. I wish all songs had a hihat intro.

turn down the bass!

(1) Try turning down the bass on your headphones. I try to mix using the treble, because the start of the kick is higher pitched (all that 'boom' is distracting). Actually I usually listen to hi-hats or claps to beatmatch.
In this respect I find some d+b easier to mix because there's plenty of hihat and snare going on (Also, they are usually in very strict time, and the main percussion sounds [esp the snare] are more varied from record to record, so it's easier to distinguish the two tunes when in the mix.)

(2) ukcoolat, I've had a similar problem with a Todd Edwards tune (I used to like quite a bit of garage). A lot of the percussion was subtley out-of-time - it sounded very cool and funky, but was a git to mix. I had to stop trusting my instincts (i.e. hihat A came in slightly before hihat B, so I intuitively wanted to slow down tune A) and force myself to only listen to a part that was always in time (e.g. the first kick of the bar).

(3) Merc, not sure what you mean by a 'reversed kick' - this would sound a bit dodgy. Kicks are often reversed as a 'fill-in', e.g. at the end of an 8-bar phrase, but the main kick sound is not generally reversed. Actually, an offbeat hi-hat (e.g. one that comes in a semiquaver earlier) can come in handy, making it easy to distinguish the two tunes you're mixing.

I always reduce the bass a lot in the headphones (as well as while mixing in), but there are still drum sounds that weird you out a little bit. Take "Smile" by Jasper St Company for example, the kick is sort of whhrrruuummmppphy, albeit punchy, and you really have to work with the eq while mixing it in. In that respect, UK garage is often much easier to mask kick sounds, 'cuz they're very short on the bass and heavy on the mids, so I usually take out all the mids while mixing in.

Sometimes you slap a new tune on, and by chance the pitch fader is already in roughly the right place. Or you move it by 2% (by guesswork) and it turns out to be almost right.

The other thing that varies is the sensitivity of the record to touch - depending on how loose the hole is (ooh er missus, etc). Sometimes I mess up because I keep accidentally stopping the record, when I just mean to slow it down a bit!

All in all, I don't find it varies that much though.
