So..

Like many of us here probably, I own a pair of the notorious silver sony headphones. I've had them for just over a year now and used them primarily at home and only a few times at the club. I loved them for the first 6 months, but that's about it..

After about 6 months of use, the leather on the earcups started cracking, and has just got progressively worse no matter how careful I am with my gear (and I try to be really careful since these weren't cheap headphones). The cracking leather kinda pissed me off but I lived with it since it didn't really affect the performance of the headphone. But, after noticing that my headphones didn't quite feel right yesterday, I took a closer look and noticed that the plastic cylinder which connects the earcup to the hinge has cracked on both sides of the headphone! They look to be on the verge of just falling apart totally now and they don't even sit right.. WTF!! I've never abused my headphones in anyway and to have them fail like this after normal use is just plain ridiculous! When I first bought them I noticed that the construction looked kinda cheesy, but with so many rave reviews on them I went with them anyways..

So of course they're out of warranty and I can't do sh*t with them, except maybe glue them, but of course they'll just break again.. not what I expected for Sony's "best" DJ headphone. I feel like I just threw away $200CDN now.. Has this happened to anyone else????? I'm curious to know as there seems to be a healthy crew of mdrv700 user's here.

Needless to say I'm pretty pissed off as they can't even seem to hold up to casual use..

btw.. I remember hearing that the big name DJs don't actually use the same 700s as the consumer version and actually get a MUCH better version... anybody know if that's true??

ive had mine for over a yr now and have had no problems with them

this is always a strange topic of discussion (it's been discussed quite a bit before). i personally own these headphones too and i've had them for almost a year and a half with no problems at all. not even the slightest cracking or showing of age at all. in fact, out of all my gear, these get almost the most abuse and still look really great. see if you can't contact sony for some answers!

and i don't know about the pro DJ versions vs. consumer....if so, i want the pro's of course!!

The leather cracking problem is for real, it tends to happen at some point or another but that depends a lot on factors, your sweat PH being the main one. Really, depending on your sweat you'd crack the leather sooner or later, even if you (like me) wipe the sweat after every use.

I usually moisten a cloth with liquid vaseline every 4 or 6 months or so, wipe the cups (I own a Techs RPDJ1200 but used a V700 for 1-1/2 yr before...) and let them dry overnight, wipping off the remains afterwards. That procedure keeps the leather in better shaper for longer, but really the V700's leather cups aren't the best out there and crack eventually.

As for the "weak link", there ain't much you can do but handle your V's very carefully... ;)

MDR700s are the most overated and hyped up headphones out there because we see a lot of top jocks are using them, almost everyone. But in my personal experience it's not very well made, the swivel sometimes breaks and the leather is not very durable, as for the sound if you compare it to the MDR600 the sound quality is the same for me.

And yeah I own a one too.

Agreed, well they're good headphones no doubt about that, but I just think there are better out there for that amount of money. Personally I think the V700's are way to heavy and uncomfortable to use with one ear. Generally I find Sennheiser alot more comfortable and well worth the money. I own a pair HD25's and couldn't be more satisfied with em.

Hmm.. they are nice headphones I'd agree, but c'mon for the price and all.. leather cracking? plastic cracking? how to preserve the leather? The most we should be discussing here is the best way to keep them from getting all scratched up

I gotta say I'm EXTREMELY dissapointed with Sony (doesn't help that Sony Canada doesn't give a f*ck since the warranty is up). I bought these headphones in the hopes that they would follow the mantra we all seem to preach "you get what you pay for". ie a friggin piece of DJ equipment that will last!!!!

Interesting how it was mentioned that this topic comes up frequently.. seems to be some ppl who go problem free with them.. and then others whose just blow up (or maybe just mine  ). I just hope that if all of the 700s are this bad that ppl will eventually notice and stop wasting they're time with them (i know i know.. but they look so damn cool :p ).

Hmm.. time to go headphone shopping again... how bout those Sennheisers.. ;)

My friend had this happen to him, the Y shaped piece that holds the earcup to the headband broke randomly one night. Took sony 3 months to fix it also. Good luck.

think about it......the "big name" dj's use theze phones because they are PAID to use them....i.e. --endorsements......

I've had my SEDJ5000's for over a year and the leather and sound quality is just as good as the day I bought them....quality phonez no doubt.....

Sennheiser makes good phones, too, particularly the HD 280'z, for the $100US price tag.....

Sony = over rated

i don't know what is with those sony headphones. I have a pair of 700s as well and so does my friend dj lrg. we both take care of them, he keeps his in his record bag and i keep mine in the little baggy in my basement. His are over a year old and look like new, mine on the other hand are bout 8 months old and almost all of the vinyl is peeled off. did Sony made half of them good and the other half crappy or what?????

As I said in my post it may have to do with the PH of your sweat, it may be more reactive with the (wimpy altogether...) vinyl/leather cover of the cups. I have some mates who wear out theirs in a month, while others never do it.

One good advice is to wipe off your sweat with a soft rag every time you take them out, and after you've finished using it just use a damp rag to clean the cups. Try to use some smooth leather protectant every once in a while. It all helps, I do it myself and I use my h'phones for at least 4/5 yrs... and after that I even manage to sell them in good shape! ;)

yeah i had the same problem with my 500's. to replace the headphone hanger cost me $65aud (they cost me $150aud to buy in the first place) this was despite them being less then 12 months old. sony were rude and obtuse in their dealing with me and the service agents for sony were even worse. a 20c part took 6 weeks for them to repair and cost me $65aud. i wasnt even man handling my headphones theyliterally just sat on my ear. a few weeks after i got the first hanger replaced the other side gave out on me. and about a week after that the hanger that had been replaced broke. i cut my losses and bought new phones.

Undercurrent.. looks like what happened to you with sony is a repeat for me here in Canada (maybe it's worldwide policy for Sony to be rude after you've already bought the product??? )

After speaking to about 4-5 different "customer service" people and much frustration (Sony quoted me $80CDN to fix the damn hinge) I was able to get 50% off of the repair costs.. yipee! Hopefully I get them a bit sooner than you did...

What have I learned from all of this?

1) If you own Sony headphones - treat them like gold.. otherwise there could be trouble for you..

2) If you dont own Sony headphones - Lucky you!!

3) If you're in the market for headphones - Don't buy Sony! (unless you're willing to go through with point number 1) :p

yeah it sucked. i treated my headphones well, theyre just poorly engineered headphones. now in retrospect im quite glad it happened i now have 2 pairs of phones that absolutely sh-it on any sony dj headphones.

if i was u now u got them repaired, sell them off. get something that wont break. do it while you can.
