Would 140 bpm be to fast for a rap song?

Depends how you have your drums hitting at. 70 and 140 are indeed the same thing..its just how its being hit.. will determine the style of the beat.If you set your tempo at 140 and have your snare hitting 1 time per bar..it will create that slow jam type pattern(bone thugs, twista,do or die type ****) and have your hit hats hitting a 4/4.That style will have the rapper rapping either real real slow going with the snare..or rapping real quick that you hear a lot in the paul wall type **** or the old skoo bone thugs ****. Now if you put your tempo at 140 and have the snare hitting 2 times per bar..that will create that old skoo booty type **** ( WHOOT THERE IT IS!) BOOM CHUCK BOOM BOOM CHUCK.All depends how you have each snare hitting that will determine a style..and yes 140 and 70 is the same thing.

WoW, 140 and 70 ARE NOT the same thing. You can make the same beat at each tempo, but they are not the same from a timing standpoint. That's like saying 30 min and an hour are the same. You can play doubletime or half time and make one the equivalent of another, but they are not the same

your right on the timing part.

No problem homie....I been playing drums for some years, and take professional lessons......with that said, 70 is 70 and 140 is 140.:)

My teacher would kill me if I told him that 70 is 140.....he would do this-------->

With that said 2/2 and 4/4 can also sound the same

i sometimes do beats at 160 and double time it

this makes no sense, 160 and you are playing double time? You must be making drum and bass then if you are playing in 4/4

I'm sure you probably mean to say half time

OMG youngjboy thank you, so many cats saying the opposite I was really irked.

Blue Danube at 70 BPM is not gonna be the same song as Blue Danube at 140. Even if you slow the drums down. Just like jboy said though different time signatures can equate to each other if the ratio is right.

 I guess my teacher forcing me to memorize all those rudiments was good for something after all:p

He is putting the snare on the 4th and 8th beat not 2nd and 4th.

No one is talking about slowing down and speeding up existing songs.

i make alot of tunes at 140

most grime is made at 140 aswell

Nevermind, i give up, I thought we were talking about playing in 4/4. It's obvious that no one is probably rapping at 160 since most hip hop is around 88-92 BPM or something like that.

Are you talking about step sequencing broken down into 16th notes or what?

you guys are over complicating this... ITS STILL ABOUT THE DRUMS. Having less snare hits gives a sense of perveived slowness. No matter what the tempo is. at 140 BPM having a snare hit on every third will make your beat very rappable.

i cant believe some people actually believe 70 bpms is the same as 140 bpms lmao,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,sure you can make it sound the same but 140 is not exactly the same as 70
it completely disregards beats per minute

you guys r idiots, talkin about 140+ would be dance/techno ****. www.myspace.com/hammaproductions. ALL of those are AT LEAST 130. "I got this" is around 145 and does that sound like techno? shut the hell up n stop over complicatin a simple situation.

"Mercy" from Kanye West.. DAMN that beat is so simple. If you look at my soundcloud for "nightfall" it's an instrumental i did for this girl to sing on, my first song done on 90bpm. My friends usually tell me to make rap beats. Would 90 be an accurate bpm to go by?

Some of the answers you guys are coming out with are too funny. As noble said some of the southern beats are done at 170bpm for hats and snares. Of course 170 halved would be 85 so that would be suitable for a hip hop beat. Its not the same but you can have the same BEAT with both tempo's. It is just a matter of the drums as already stated.

Not if you double time it. 2 bars at 140 = 1bar at 70 .. Ya get the drift?

Exactly.

Rap can freakin be any BPM if the artist has real rap talent. If you can't spit to any BPM... you are not really an MC.

Period.

Throw on any beat with any BPM and i'll spit the exact same verse to it. I guarantee you i'll make it match the beat.

you can have it as high as you want it, its about where you place your notes, but 140 i average
