Rome, I swear i thought I was the only one.

I tell these ignorant fcuks all the time, I'm out here, doing my BEST to show young black people in a positive light, so that YOU WON'T HAVE TO GO THRU SO MANY HARDSHIPS.

I'm overly courteous to that white lady when I sit down on the bus, so that the next time a black person sits next to her, she doesn't feel the need to clutch her purse.

I'm OVERLY friendly to these folks in this office, so that the next time they interview one of you black folks, they are going to have a POSITIVE image of a black employee in their minds.

When i worked at Circuit City, I was in the computer department, and I'd get white people all the time that would say "we don't want to work with anyone black", or "we want to work with a white guy".

They'd just come right out and say it to one of the sales people.

AND I'D LET THEM WORK WITH A WHITE GUY.

And I'd love the look on their face, when that white sales person turned around to me to answer every single question those bigoted ass customers asked them about a piece of technology...because I WAS THE EXPERT.

This other time, I had a customer say they didn't want to work with a black salesman. I spent the next 6 HOURS working with these customers, just to change their mind about black sales people, so that the next time they walked into ANY store, they would remember the amazing customer service and knowledge that they got from that young black guy at Circuit City...

And when that same chick had a problem with her computer, I came out to her house, and she tried to fcuk me.

But all that's to say that these young kids don't understand what us older (semi older) black men go through, just to make shit easier on them.

I bust my ass everyday to try to portray them in a good light, and they come right behind me and fcuk it up, cuz they can't pull their pants up or speak proper english.

Shit is discouraging.

This post is the truth. I get so tired of black folks saying I wanna stay true to my people I or I'm not selling out for those white people. And its their ignorant ass grandparents or parents that put this shit in their head. I heard alot of older black people say to their kids that white people are evil, smh. when will it stop? Troup and Rome I love what you guys are doing, keep it up

Rome is just a little bit older than us but 30 something old black men yes we try to uplift black ppl with the ethics and morals we portray down with Christ or not..
and I find it encouraging everytime I hear a white person say you're a smart man... I see you going far it life...
encouraging because I made my mind up about that before I heard it from them

young ppl don't see it because they have the comfort of mom's house in most case..some have the comfort of dad and mom's house
and believe what the media portrays for them....
act a fool, get money.
don't go to school, work a crappy job till you get fame
sell drugs and then turn that into legal money

I agree Tone, media has a big influence on young blacks

i dont buy that. Other black kids have a bigger influence on young blacks than media does.

i didnt wanna smoke weed and sell dope cause of rap, i wanted to smoke weed and sell dope cause the cool kids on my block did it and i wanted to be like that. They wanted to do it cause theyve seen somebody else do it. Now media may make people a little more money hungry, but we are very influenced by our peers. I wouldnt be who i am now if it wasnt for my peers

I agree with that sir. I think I would have turned out different if it wasn't for my peers. But as you said media makes people a little more money hungry.

thats humanity as a whole though. I dont think anybody is seeing Gucci Mane and saying oh i want to sell crack. They see dope boys on the corner and want to be THAT. People only want to be what theyre around.

Thats why the rich stay rich and the poor stay poor. Thats why you gotta go to college not just for the education but for the experience and meeting people outside of your comfort zone. Thats why you gotta get out the country and realize there is more to life than being on the block.

Art imitates life. not the other way around. Gucci Mane is a dope boy on the corner, who turned into a rapper. People arent idolizing Gucci in the hood cause he sells dope, they idolize him cause he made it out the hood and started making legal money. Its all about the money. But its not the media thats really pushing the agenda. its Art imitating life, things that go on.

Kids on all these prescription drugs, and sipping lean and shit like that. Thats not just cause they heard that shit on a couple songs and got curious, its cause theyre around peers who are on that shit and songs just are musical documentation of those instances.

As a young black man, you gotta be out here showing your peers you can be out here making legal money and being a model citizen and making the system work for you

not to say kids dont listen to music and arent influenced at all. But you gotta remember theres a reason why Becky and Timmy listening to Gucci doesnt hurt them as much as it does Tyrone and Shaquisha. because Tyrone and Shaquisha have real life Gucci Manes that they see everyday on the corner, see gettin money, pulling up on the corner in the big body benz on 30s. They see that shit in real life every day. The other kids in the burbs see that shit on WorldStar and Youtube, they know how to cut it off and cut it out

realest shit I heard in minute fam. How are the people that you grew up with reacting to your success? Did your success make them wanna change their lives around(not to say they were doing anything bad in the first place)

I never even thought about it like that man

when people from the subrubs hear that music, and they turn it off.. their Urban experience is over. Its done with, its on to the next thing

when black kids from the projects hear that music, and they turn it off.. they walk outside and see everything thats being talked about on the records, so its much easier to have those influences on your back

and about the women you're right man I got this girl at work now..saying all kinds of nasty stuff to me..I used to blow it off but she gets out of control like I'm mixing up some food she's like look Tony and turn around she bent over "like what you see" this is no way for a young lady to act..

Damn tony tone. You got em like that? lol jk

theyre cool with it man, i want all the real people i grew up with to make it. My homie just landed a gig at ConEd, i had to keep him off the drugs for the past 3 months so he can pass his physical, but he bout to make 17.50 an hour.

I mean kids from the hood arent dumb, we're all smart, its all about having discipline and wanting to apply it. I wanna be able to call up my niggas and be like "Yo lets go out to ****in Italy and wild out for a weekend" I wanna be able to hit em up like "yo lets take a 7 day trip out to Vegas and ball outta control" Thats why i dont talk about money stuff and making money in order to brag or make them feel bad

i want them to get motivated and work hard and stay out of trouble so we can experience being rich together, we already experienced being poor and middle class together. I think thats what everybody wants on the low. We all want to ball out with some of our closest friends. We all wanna have a Diddy type party with 3 of your best homies, in a random country. Thats whats dope, we all want a Hangover type experience. And its dope to share those experiences with people you grew up or came up with, instead of just rich strangers that you dont know that well

Real shit. We need more people like you in this world. This might seem kinda like a weird question but. Does it feel like God chose you to be that role model, the guy that leads the people that you grew up with to a better path, and a guy that made it out the hood?

Shit is discouraging.

I went to lunch, this needs to be read by everybody that missed it.

People are trying hard to uphold a portrayal of decency for Black America... to help YOU youngin' not be looked at like the media make you out to be.

They know that when they "grow up" they hope everything isn't torn down, maybe they'll do the same for the people that come behind them.

... or maybe they won't care.

They should care about their kids, nieces and nephews... I do.

We're doing it to ourselves now though.

People need to turn off those camera phones and quit uploading every scrap to YouTube and WSHH.

People are laughing at 'em in the privacy of their own homes. It's not uncommon to see somebody filming a fight in the black community and they're screaming out WORLDSTAR! WORLDSTAR!!!!!

Sad. Don't air all the dirty laundry.

and to fuel that hunger folks sell drugs, so that can have the flashy clothes, jewelry their fav. rap artists have...
and not get influenced by rap to where they start doing crime ...you are right the ppl in your environment as well...and those in your environment listening to songs like "Get money,f everything else" or whatever
and aren't you the one saying influence allows you to sell things/make money

young ppl buy shoes/clothes because the media/commericals says it's hot,the thing to have and then more ppl buy because they see someone wear the shoes
visa-versa

I know that some people buy high priced sneakers and clothes because they're the highest dollar items they think they can ever afford. Like they don't really think about a house because they don't want a mortgage for 30 years or 15. They won't buy a new car because they don't want payments for 5 years, they'll buy a car from an owner and fix it up the way they want it but it's paid for. A lot of them have made enough mistakes to have shot credit to where they won't get approved for a house anyway.

... some people I know that are like that got a car and the car had 22% interest on it....

Teach your kids EARLY! don't have them put themselves in a hole before they even get started. Police records for dumb stuff and all that <<< That's what I don't like...

You PEOPLE READING THIS... don't do a disservice to the kids... even if it's just the little dude down the street or your nephew. Teach little girls that they're not supposed to drop it like it's hot.

True story, I went to Arkansas and they had a kids dance contest. I put my daughter in it. They started playing Wipe Me Down... the little girls were on the floor grinding. My daughter was running in place flapping her arms.... my daughter won, lol. They couldn't justify giving the money to those other girls. The DJ said "That's how little girls are supposed to dance, she wins". She was so happy and she didn't even know what she had done, she thought she had beat them dancing. My wife and I were so proud... the other Moms mean mugged my wife, lol.

I did all of the rambling to say...

We can do better and it starts with all of us reading this on FP. Your friends might think you're "acting funny" but you know there's a bigger picture...

.... and you'll feel better about the way you carry yourself.

hopefully.

.... for the kids.
