Andy Summers from the Police (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Police) was 37 when they released their 2nd album and their careers started to take off. Big Daddy kane is 37 and is considered and an old dinosaur!! The Red Hot Chilly Peppers are still popular and they are in their 40's now so are U2, why is it that we abandon rappers so fast? I know this is the music of the youth but come on, does anyone here ever think about the fact that you have to pander to 12 year old kids who won't care about you 2 years from now? Anytime some one takes 3 yrs between albums it's considered a comeback, in any other genre it would be just their next album. Someone please give me your thoughs on this. Another thing, does anyone think that adults are a missing demographic that is not being targeted? I'm 24 and I can't immagine listening to some of this stupid crap when i'm 34!!

Here is the Big Daddy Kane Video, how come rappers don't seemto have any intelligence anymore, it's just crack rap:

Tell me about it! I'm 31. I use to buy albums about once a week when I was younger. I would be in the store for an hour trying to decide between 10 different albums. Now it's hard to find one album a month even worth buying. I guess I've just turned into my grandpa. (I don't know how you kids listen to that sh!t)

Aren't Dr. Dre and J.D. both somewhere around 40? And what about Too $hort and E-40...

Rakim... greatest rapper ever.. still making HITS, and he started in '88 (or a bit earlier, i think 88 though)

I've heard tons of people (FP'rs included) say that those above mentioned are too old, need to retire, irrelevant. I was at a Slick Rick and Doug E Fresh show a month ago and heard people talking about how they were old and should just quit. Im thinking "Why are you even here????" I heard sh!t like... I bet Slick comes out with a walker. He's like 4 years older than Jay-Z!!!! (and 10X better)

It's weird too because the people that used to buy their records are the same age as the older rappers but ride around playin' Yung Joc...

I think the older rappers try to make music for younger people and not for people their age... Too Short and Ice Cube still have loyal fans that will buy their records but a lot of East coast dudes just get written off.

Somehow, Snoop stays around...

plus the radio won't show them any love and hip hop is not like singing... I mean you could listen to a good singing voice forever but after hearing somebody rap for four CD's... that's probably as much as you want to hear of their voice.

Nas is feeling the pressure now. Hip Hop heads want fresh and new voices about every 6 months.

If I were a known name, I'd sign artists to a 3 song deal and then get rid of 'em and keep signing different people from all over the country and only drop singles from my label. After the 3 songs... the artists is free to go... (but I'll get money from future earnings... ha ha ha). I give them the vehicle and spam up the commercials and magazines... they make hits and get the hell on... then the next guy makes me some more money.

Those old schools artist should've just found talent and nurtured younger artists. We do throw away our hero's though. Like Run probably can't sell another record...

Tell me about it. He doesen't say anything tight on songs nowadays. He just slides all over his 16 bars.

I'm lookin forward to that Nas. Streets Disciple was Whoa! :victory:

The core hip-hop audience is fickle as eF and by core I mean the mainstream, which is the majority. Hip hop itself is more and more becoming a frivolous and flamboyant as hel genre and these kind of things attract younger audiences. This younger crowd also is more receptive to their peers or a person that looks or acts or does whatever pop trends they also follow and equals everyone trying to look young and be cool. Why? That’s where the money is at- in a young demographic. Everyone needs to be young/young looking and cool- that’s just how the entertainment business works. Corporate America knows this, so do the people vying to be future stars. They realize what’s easy to sell and what’s easy to sell is what’s going to dominates the airwaves and reach that core audience and all that for the most part falls into irrelevant crack/gat or pimps n hos rapping- that’s just all mindless entertainment

So oldschool hip hop already has 3 strikes against it;
Old is bad
Lyrical content not mindless entertainment is bad
No corporate engine to back you is bad

EDIT: Just wanna make sure no one gets me wrong, I got no problem with gansta/pimp ish, I think it has its place in hip hop and would not prefer if it did not exist- no. I just got a problem with the balance or lack of. Its also that thats all people listen to, I think thats a problem and dangerous.

I haven't heard anything about new material. GREAT show though! Doug E works a crowd like you wouldn't believe. It was at a venue where you could drink til 3:30 in the morning, so they stayed afterwards and partied with everybody.

LOL! He does. I respect Snoop. He's been one of the best at stepping his game up, and holding on to his spot in music with the fans. To me, that's what makes him a legend.

I think Snoop just decided one day... "Man.. I'm rich b!tch. I don't have to put ANY effort into this anymore".

when i heard the Ice Cube "go to church" track, and snoops verse was about to start, i was so excited, because its a harder kinda track, should be more gangster like cube's verse, and then snoop kicks that soft verse, i was kinda dissapointed
