Im Thinking Of Buying A Mtr For Recording Is This A Good Way To Record Vocal A Nd Tracks For A Complete Album Or Is Softwar The Best Way To Go I Ask Cuase You Guys Are The Best Source I Know!

there is no best way....but i use a yamaha aw16g......great sound quality....portable...no crashes or virus crap to worry about.....eventually getting back to computer recording but for the last 8 years everything i've done has been with a studio-in-a-box

you can share files better with software and you can use plugins....but with a standalone mtr you don't have to worry about a separate computer......good luck.

I do....

Dare I stick my head out and say "I do" use a multitrack recorder....

I have a Korg D32XD....(32 Track) digital recorder.

In My opinion...one of the BEST multitracks ever made! It has since been discontinued but some can SCARCELY be found on the net....

There are a LOT of "computer" guys around here...MOST of which will obviously say that that's they way to go...but i had my reasons for going the multitrack route...I am happy with MY decision but the question is.....

will YOU be happy with YOURS?????

Thre is a LOT to research...so you are gonna be at this for a minute...LOL

Good luck!

I started out with a studio in a box but, i did not like it. I want the freedom that software gave me. I eventually sold it and got software. Software fits me a bit better... Peace

I use both from time to time. Some days I do the software others I do the multitrack. When I'm really into a track the HD recorder works wonders because I can actually do so much with so little. I use a AW16G also and it only has 2 effects, but it has seperate EQ and Compression on each track, and I have a external FX box. Once you learn the ins and outs of one you will be amazed at what can be done. Kanye did college drop out on a roland VS. On the other hand not being able to share tracks and vast VST plugs are not a option. So you have to find what suits your needs then make a decision based on that.

I use the AKAI DPS16, discontinued. Just recently discontinued but, still available is the AKAI DPS24. The unit is amazing. The sound quality is amazing. It is a highly underrated machine.

The DPS 24 comes with numerous ins and outs including ADAT. With the ADAT board you can connect to your PC, If yu have an ADAT card available on your PC, and use a program called console www.console.jp
which will allow you to use VST plug ins in real time with the DPS.

Check out http://dpsworld.vibestudio.net/viewforum.php?f=1 all your questions regarding the DPS24

^^^^^^^

yeah that Akai DPS is a BEAST!!!!

That would have been my SECOND choice...It has GREAT connectivity PLUS it integrates well with computer AND is capable of recording 24 tracks at 24 bit....

I went with the Korg because it was (at the time) the ONLY 32 track Multitracker....Track count was IMPORTANT to me because (doing R&B/Gospel) I can go through 16-20 Tracks on vocals EASY...and I HATE to bounce...LOL

yeah that d32xd is a beast. my boy got one..... 16 touch sensitive motorized faders... he sold me on getting one, but they were discontinued.... the only thing i didnt like about it, you have to buy everything seperate for it to make it a complete and powerful tool

I still use my tascam 2488. The sound quality is bananas!! Burning cds is slow as hell (I use an outside source to burn), but overall I like the machine.

i've had 3 akai dps 12's (includieng the dps12i variants) and a few of the roland vs series and yamaha awg16
in my expierence i've found the roland vs series from 1680 up to be the easiest to yes and have the best sound per dollar. i currently keep a vs-1680 in my preproduction studio as it's dumb easy to use and easy to get the routing i need (as i use an mpc with turntables and a few synths and hate haveing to bring my synths out when i do live beats so i record the midi'd synths into the recorder then sample em back into the mpc)
you can get a 16 track vs1680 or 1880 for under 300-450 bucks i'd say go 1880 as the cd drive is often included but if you get a 1680 w/ external cd drive it's just as good. though remember they were made in like 1998 so cd write speeds are only up to i belive 4x wich is slow for burnin tracks down.

i use the br1600, its koo.......but.....limited, and i hate bouncing too lol

I am Curious.....

What ELSE would you need to buy to make it COMPLETE?????

It has GREAT preamps...
Several built in effects...
Mastering Capabilities....
CD Burner....

I have done n entire album using Just the D32XD...the ONLY thein that I have considered adding is a "High End" Tube Preamp....Not because I NEED one....Just because I am Greedy...LOL

analog compressor board

adat input/output

I'll check for other options and get back...

its still a bads boy.. I would purchase one, if they werent discontinued.

the eight channel analog input board

Actually....

One of the reasons I went with this board was BECAUSE it has "Analogue" compression of the first eight channels BUILT IN...something that NO other SIAB had at the time....

Of course it only had 8 inputs and you would have to pay extra for the additional 8 inputs PLUS extra for the Analogue compressor board for those additional 8 inputs....and yeah you would have to pay extra for the ADAT card...if you chose to use it....I am in the studio most of the time by myself so there is no need for me to record 16 tracks at once....

BUT...

As it was designed (All in one unit) yould would NOT need anything else if you wanted to stay within the machine....

I actually researched this piece and several others for almost a year before deciding on the Korg, reading EVERY spec sheet and review I could find...

Even though this piece is now obsolete...i have "Pro Tools" dudes compliment me often on the quality of my sound....

I wouldnt let the fact that they are discontinued deter me (If you really want one) they can probably be had for around $1500 now (Originally $2999.99)

I have had mine for 3 years now....without a single problem...

Even if i get a SUPER computer with a Pro Tools TDM set up....I will NEVER get rid of my baby (Korg) they will have to PRY it from my cold dead hands...LOL

:o
