Does anyone honestly know where the beat "lease" term came from?

lol^. I had A feeling that would be one of the first responses..

But seriously tho, as much as the term "leases" may sound funny, the truth is now its widely accepted in the beat selling game.

I don't know how many times I've had to explain that a non exclusive license is the same as a lease...

I don't try to explain. I just tell em yeah, whatever. Sign here.

Mike Will talks about leases on the net... so is he a broke rapper or soundclick producer?

probably started by some producer who tried to sell a track to an artist who then sat on the beat. Said producer probably found another person who wanted the beat and gave it to him. The rest is history... That's my guess

When I first got on the net, I never heard of soundclick but it was a site with a snowman on it........can't remember the name of the site but when you would search for "beats for sale" (before the big google boom though....way back in the AOL days) that site was the first to pop up. They had leases back then. They may have been the first on that term. Where as soundclick wasn't allowing beats for sale back then "if I'm thinking right". lol! Soundclick was ran by email........dudes were like "buy this beat for $1000...hot....gooniegoogoobeats@yahoo.com". No buttons or nothing, just advertising on the title. But that snowman site or some other actual "beat selling site" probably spread to soundclick and started the "$100 to $50" beat sale advertisement.

But somebody please correct me....I know I might be incorrect.

^^I seen that site. I think its called coldbeats?
