Heres a post I found...
check out this recent response from akai:
Re: Blue MPC4000
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is obviously a misunderstanding.
We have always stated that there are no hardware differences between the blue and white MPC4000 models.
(and this was made very clear to our dealers as well)
As shown at Winter NAMM 2004 last week, "Blue" is the new color for all Akai Professional products in 2004 (for a unified look):
MPD16, MPC1000, MPC2000XL, MPC4000, MFC42 Filter, Z4/Z8 Samplers, DPS24 Studio, EWI, HV10 and HV1 harmonizers.
The only product that changes hardware between the original and the blue version is the "
HeadRush" (delay/tape echo/loop recorder pedal), but in this case, the model number also changes from "E1" to "E2".
The "new Intel CPU (StrongArm)" and "new LSI (Z96)" is indeed the original text from the introduction of the MPC4000 (only the picture has been changed to the blue model, but the text has not been changed).
There was no intent from us to imply that this was "new hardware" this year.
The OS that we were showing at NAMM on the MPC4000 was actually the pre-release version of V1.51 that fixes the "MIDI OUT FULL" and related issues when using MIDI CLOCK.
In V1.50, this issue only happens when using MIDI CLOCK, not when using MIDI TIME CODE synchronization.
V1.51 is now in beta test and if everything goes well, it should be released early February.
We are commited to the continued development and support of the MPC4000. Several new features will be added in 2004.

Thanks Sean, I just wish someone from Akai would have cleared this up sooner - and I realize that the MPC4000 is not really your area, so don't take that as me blaming you. It just amazes me that this is the first place we get any official word on this and OS 1.51. And yes, the MIDI Out Full error happens with MIDI Clock, which is what I use. Can't honestly say that I tried it with MIDI Time Code. Unfortunately, there were a number of other bugs reported on the MPC4000 Yahoo Group mailing list. Hopefully these will all be addressed. I truly hope that Akai is commited to the continued development and support of the MPC4000. I had almost given up hope.
and a later post:
Simon,
Yes, Akai is commited to the development and support of the MPC4000 (white or blue, all the same).
Intellisample is already there (at least some functions):
When you record a sample, you can:
* Auto-Normalize it
* Automatically add it to a Program (existing or new) on the Pad of your choice (simply by hitting the Pad that you want the sample to play on).
I think that what you want is "auto-sampling" each time the MPC receives a new sound after a silence (for instance when sampling multiple sounds from a sample CD) and "auto-increment" the Pad number, but this is an additional feature. However, this is in the list of features that we want to implement in future updates.
Regarding "audition samples from hard disk", the current hardware can support it and this feature is our highest priority for the next major update.
The reason why it is not there yet is that this does require a lot of code programming, and in the mean time, we had so many user requests to implement "16-Levels Tuning" and "Pad Mixer" features (although those were not advertised) that they took priority over "audition samples from hard disk" in our schedule for V1.50. Now that those are implemented (V1.51 will be out soon), work on "audition samples from hard disk" can resume.
The only other "advertised" feature that is somehow missing is "PRJ files" to save and reload all data (Song, Sequences, Multi, Program, Samples) from a current Project in one pass.
However, this feature is actually implemented, but it is not called "PRJ file".
You can:
* save ENTIRE MEMORY to a New Folder
* reload the entire Folder by placing the cursor on the Folder
Same result.
