damn, glad i started out on a keyboard before anything else. i usually lay the main drums down with my mpd32 then use my keyboard for bass, percs, ect. but i also sequence on my keyboard as well. when you have hardware interfaces you have no choice but to learn, tho i use both soft and hard now. cubase to sequence into with my harware or use reason and cubase via rewire for my software ish. works wonders

what was the first software u started out on?

prop. reason. i got my first mpd and went in on it. software is easier to navigate through since its just a few clicks away from everything, but hardware sounds more true to the ear. but with vsti advancement its more appealing. i was fortunate to live next door to this rich family and when they were moving my neighbor gave me a motif xs6. i already had a korg M3 and a roland juno g. he basically completed my setup hardware wise. i just got into software maybe 2 years ago, but cubase is hardware friendly so i mainly sequence into that and use reasons drums. mix in cubase then lay whatever hardware sounds from my workstations i want into it

That catanya is the shit. That thang is sweet. That is like having a orchastra in a jar...I must have it.

Only drawback is that there is no manual...

You have to play with it for a minute to figure out what's going on... crazy patterns though... that never phugg up lol.

Get this program below... it tells you what chords make up a good song.... then use those chords with Catanya.

It's called Kozong...

^Damn i wish somebody would give me a Motif, lol.

man i use to talk about music to him all the time, implying i 'wish i had a motif then my setup would be complete, but i cant afford it' lol then all my petty shit paid off. he actually showed me how to use it. pretty cool guy tho, a pot head with his band dreams down the drain due to 3 kids to say the least. he is a computer engineer so he lives real well lol.

My biggest problem is Basslines also tryna come up Melodies sometimes is trouble, i suck with Basslines lol

ha- mouse. love it.

@djaycas you legend! I agree that the mouse is probably the best tool out there to sequence melodies with.

For me I'd say strings are my problem area. Can't seem to find any decent TIm & Bob style strings so melodies always sound strange and really fake.

The easiest part for me would have to be drums. All sequenced using a mouse but I've created some amazing tracks.

I bought Catanya the other day... so I can cheat more...

I'm lazy as phugg... on err thang.

You should buy this too, try it out... you buy it. Downloads in seconds... makes your ish "chunky"...

NY Compressor - http://www.ddmf.eu/

i have to admit that catanya and Kozong is a very powerful combination...

no sarcasm at all...

create a drum pattern (loops, rex files, programmed), have kozong create a chord progression structure (intro, verse, bridge, chorus), have catanya do its thang, mix, master and you are off to your next tune...

i could see this combo increase productivity 1000 fold...

x2

every beat i ever made i did with a mouse

This blows my mind. A few years ago I worked at Guitar Center and in walks Michael Strahan being led by Will Peterson- to my department looking for a way to make beats while being mobile. I should've sold him a laptop.

Man that Catanya was playing Merengue...

My weakest instrument is Strings.....by far and then bass, cause I never know what I'm gonna do with it. But if you get some midi file, it helps a ton.

Motif XS is great too cause it has a tone of arps on it ... give variation and sparks creation... I never hear anyone talk about the remix function at all, though!

the sequencer in fruity loops makes tough tasks so simple

a mouse is not an instrument. the many sounds u can arrange with it are.

When Rome says get something, I GET IT.

No questions asked.

When I'm "pretending" to be watching TV with everybody at home... I'm normally on my laptop reading about music apps and downloading them to see what they do, lol. So normally there's ish downloading on my laptop while the shows are on, then I go and try 'em out. I get A LOT of crap but me not knowing a lot about music let's me know which ones actually "do something". Like I've seen "What are some good chord progressions?" in threads about 100 times... then there's something like Kozong because somebody else had the same question. Put that question in Google... and Kozong will pop up. Then I think "Let me see what this does..." then I download it. If I keep it, normally I'll tell people about it. Like that NY Compressor, I got that the other day... I already have like 4 compressors but.... they don't sound like that one. I don't know much about compression but I know that I liked "whatever it was" that it did, lol.

You have to spend some time with some of this ish though because normally it's low priced and doesn't have much documentation.

... but if it doesn't do something right away... it normally gets uninstalled right away. My laptop is my test machine... plus I read what other people say about the plugins in reviews while it's downloading so I'll know what to look for to see if I agree or not.

Kozong lets you get to work right away, lol.

Anybody that gets Catanya should click the velocity button at the bottom at least 10 times before they settle on something... it'll sound different with every click.

I don't know if I'd make a whole song using Catanya though...

... it really does make a mouse an instrument, lol. Watch that dudes vid.

Oh, I don't use the presets either.... thats cheating to me, I make up my own patterns. I'm a weirdo that way.

Electric guitarr.. because I mostly don't feel melodies played with that ish. Maybe one of the reasons I'm not digging most of the rock music.
