What's the difference between Logic Pro and Protools

I have Logic Pro and it serves the purpose, but everyone nowadays screams Protools.

Is it just because it's like a "brand" name or is there a real difference between the two?

I always wondered this myself as I am a fan of FL Studio.

I've used all three (Pro tools, Logic & Fl Studio). Pro Tools is the industry standard when it comes to 'audio editing' and multi track recording. What makes pro tools so good is it's ability to edit audio very well and efficiently, and it's mixing capabilities. When it comes to the recording & mixing process pro tools is really the standard. Not to say it's the "best", but it's the standard.

Logic Pro & Fl Studio however are more geared towards 'sequencing'. That basically means it's more made for users to create electronic music (hip hop, pop, etc) and they both have great workflow when it comes to midi editing and arranging, VST control, and just general sequencing.

To me the pro tools midi is lacking majorly, and the workflow of sequencing and arranging electronic based music in pro tools is far behind Logic and even Fl Studio. Not to say you can't do it, but it's not designed to be a sequencer first, it's designed to be a recording, mixing and editing program first.

To sum up, basically if you're going to be producing 'beats', instrumentals, or any kind of electronic music i'd say stick with Logic. When you start getting into the mixing/recording side of things, you might want to get into Pro Tools.

Hope that helps!

Thanks!! I actually was using Logic initially for recording and editing. And the very little background I have with Protools was from my experience with Logic. But I agree. Logic is DEFINITELY midi-friendly

Definitely man. Not that Logic is bad for recording or editing either. Just pro tools is known for being the standard. But honestly, it all comes down to what you're comfortable with! If logic feels the best for you, and it's got a workflow that's right for you, stick with it. More or less most DAW's are capable of similar functions.

It's the painter, not the paintbrush.

People think Pro Tools is the shit because big studios tend to use Pro Tools hardware systems that are designed to take the processing load off the computer (usually a Mac Pro) and so they tend to assume that using some native version of Pro Tools is somehow similar and will bring them closer to having a more professional setup by way of brand association, which is quite a flawed assumption on their part. In all honesty you are far better off sticking with Logic than using almost any other native DAW on a Mac.

Thanks. Yeah I figured it was just because Protools was popular. lol

Protools is main DAW on some professional recording studios , but i think that logic is most easy to use and some basic plugins are just amazing .

Logic seems more difficult for me, but more than likely if you go to a recording studio they are going to be using protools. Its like the standard DAW for recording.

ChefBoy the manual for Logic looks like a BIBLE. LOL. And that's just one of the 5 or 6 manuals that come with it. lol. Most of the stuff I know about Logic now is from 20% reading and 80% fidgeting around with it.

Get the hell outta here with that bullshit ... if you're not serious enough to invest money into yourself, no one else will invest in you either.

Did your rich daddy buy you the 1,000$ (outrageous) Pro Tools?

Man, why are you coming off so foul? Some people are more well off than others.

Get out of here with that fortune cookie sounding pseudo-intellectual bullshit.

that's the standard for Futureproducers.com
don't like sorry
and
$1,000 isn't much money when it comes to music production
I spent ten times that
drop in the bucket
a true producer will spend
$1,500 on just acoustic treatment or $500 if they are really handy at building

a true producer will spend $150 to $200 on a MIDI keyboard

a true producer will spend $1000.00 on a group of VSTs instrumentals & additional banks/presets
and another
$1000.00 on VST signal processors

$700 to $1,500 on a desktop computer

you can go with just
$1000.00
1. $700.00 laptop or Desktop
2. $300 on FL Studio
and use free VSts and use free VST signal processors their are great ones out there

for someone on a buget
you can use
Reaper $60 full license(which is just as good as Pro Tools) but no where near a Pro Tools HD setup

I myself use
1.FL Studio (for beatmaking) I cant remember I brought it back in 2007 with lifetime free updates (best deal around) but I would never record with it

2.Cubase 4 for (tracking aka recording, mixing) $300 upgrade from Cubase VST 5.0

3.Yamaha HS80ms with the Zen Pro Mod $1000.00

4.T-Racks bundle $300

5.URS Everything EQ and Compressor Bundle (Native) $600 but brought the license off a assoicate for $150

6.SPL meter $30 ebay

7.Acoustic Treatment $1,200.00

8.Tascam US-428 Audio/MIDI control surface interface (now just used for control surface and MIDI interface)
$200 ten years ago still works just spend $15.00 on ebay for replacement AC plug

9.Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 $150.00 great preamps

10.Several Mics of the year $400

11.Lifetime one time fee Zinsta beatselling Store/player formerly known as Isellbetternow $70.00

12.Sylenth1 $180.00
numberous third-party presets/soundbanks $100.00

13.Nexus $300
some expansion $300

14.Casio WK-1800 76 key General MIDI keyboard $400 didn't know any better back in 2002 (was going to make beats on it lol

15.Computers over the years $2,500

16.too many drumkits/sample libraries $3000.00

so yeah I invested in alot of stuff
you don't you can just make beats with any thing and record with any thing

I'm a serious audio engineer not just a producer so the things listed above are just a drop in bucket for me

when I buy my home
just the construction on the basement studio will be $10,000 to $15,000

so no one is being off base

I suggest anyone wanting to get into Music Production and be independent get a good job to support your craft and then use the craft to support your lifestyle
and improvement of your lifestyle
