The real key is not to discriminate with locations. Rule of thumb: where ever you can find a nice flow of traffic you will make money with a strong pitch. People equal sales. Period. I have sold cd's to old *** people. Little kids too.... As long as they can at least cover your cost of the cd (1CD + 1 CD Case + 1 Insert)...get em. See I have a duplication service that i run. So I am intimately acquainted with all that. (I'll Give a great price for duplication also.....but that's a whole other thread.) Back To Business. Ok. If you live in a place like me, then you probably have access to chicken shacks or even better, bootleg cd or dvd hustlas. Just don't be a pr**k and short stop on their sales. Let them get their traffic and then eat off what walks away from them. After you go out for a while, you will learn which areas have that paper. Then you use them as your most frequented places. Check cashing spots too. Oh yea. people who just got paid will be easier targets. Clubs usually dont work to be honest. cause you cant hit em up going in. Who is gonna carry it all night. And by the time they leave most people are trying to get laid or get sleep. Not to mention, they probably have spent their load for the night. Go Get dat money.

I am starting a label, and it is focused on Hip Hop/R&B...That being said, if we sold the CD for $6 and the artist kept $3 and I got $3 because I fronted the $$$ to get it pressed after we used MY studio to record it, then maybe this is a cool way to get the artist some quick scratch and also see what we have, right..?

So, being in Las Vegas, it would be great to have the artist & his posse down there selling it righ on the strip then....May not help create a buzz in Vegas directly because its 99% tourists, but maybe start to launch something nationwide if you are out there every night, right...? And you never see the same people twice because they are constantly in and out.....There were over 40,000,000 tourists in Las Vegas so far in 2007, so you certainly have a big audience...

Thoughts?

I have sold cd's on the streets of L.A. and lived off of it with a artist I work with for 8 months. A Lot of things black scientist said I agree with like how to pick out people, have a pitch, keep moving. But somethings I don't agree with at all. We sold our cd's for $10 and ALWAYS let the people hear the music and we sold between 3,000 and 4,000 in 8 months. Because first if someone is buying a cd for 10 instead of 1 dollar, they value it more. I personally wouldn't expect to hear anything good from a $1 cd. The cover of our cd was something we made in a kinkos and made copies and used them as inserts. Your packaging helps how everything looks but that only goes so far, in the end it matters what the music sounds like. If they hear something that they like they are more liable to buy it. His advantage with the $1 thing is more people will take a risk and buy it just because its a dollar. But after all that I know if I'm ever out of a job I can sell my music on the street to eat. We made about $150 a day each, not to mention meeting A Lot of people, tourists girls, and signing a bunch of autographs. I've had kids come up to me on 3rd St. Promenade and tell me about the cd they bought from me in 2004!!!

I feel you homie. Thing is that the dude who started the thread was asking how to get a buzz. So i told him what we did to get buzzing. buzzing and making money are two different things most of the time. We stopped selling them for a dollar after about a year. If you made 150 dollars on most days....then that means you only sold 15 cd's most of the time. That's a number that you can achieve and have sold 150 cd's.....and making the same money. But who's buzzing faster I ask you? Then......when a person listens to your cd....And your **** is hot. You have just bust em in the gut with a flashback emotion, like. They say to themselves..." Damn yo I bought that **** for a dollar. This **** if fire. That's whats up." Finally, I respect you most for your comment that the package could look great, but still needs to sound good. In fact, I told him that to. Maybe, just in my own little way. Peace. Most people in the street, wondered what we were doing. But every now and again..... Several people would stop and think.....and look up at us and say....."You guys are making a lot of money." And this would be like some old cat with a suit on, white with a horseshoe baldspot. It's nothing more than Guerilla marketing. Some old school sh*t guess. Peace. When you think Wi?Not....Think Walmart

Just wondering how or whats the secret on getting a buzz round town. Ive seen alot of acts that seem more phoney then real deal just wondering how to get the name out? internet, shows, flyers, etc. just need some help with this. Whats the best route if ur trying to do this by yourself wit the homies ofcourse.
Visibility in every way. Period. Work forums like this. Work myspace. Go to every event football game, party, ect....... reppin yourself. Open mic nights. The coffee shop by the college. Barber Shops, clothing stores, The car wash on the main street on the hottest days, fridays, and pay days. Ride the bus or the train every now and then and talk to people. do the flyers while your at it. You can collect numbers, web sites and emails talking to people. Then use them. Its cheaper than printing 1000 flyers every week, and more effective because they meet you and remember you. Making dope tracks is probably the easiest part honestly. Make a plan to at least once a week go somewhere and promote, even if its for a short period of time like 2 hours at the car wash playin your stuff. People catch on and will notice.

okay, i've been pushing cd's only on select days like friday saturday and sundays and i gotta say i've been makin a decent amount of money, but the thing is, my partner is lazy as **** sometimes, we got a real hot product cause i sell the cd's about 80% of the time, my thing is, i dont have a pitch, just a cheap price an ipod and a mouthpiece, after reading this thread i see that there are different ways to get money out of this, different things work for different people, me and my partner were selling them for 2 bucks but we upped the price to 3, people may think its not making much of a difference but it really is, and what i also do is let the people hear the tracks for at least 30 seconds, true there are gonna be people walking by while u pitching to someone else but that's why u have a partner, i'll have to say that i make about 20 dollars an hour off of this sh!t just hitting up the mall... the truth is you just gotta spot your type of customers, i've sold my stuff to kids and grown ass people u just gotta pop your sh!t off to em the right way, not to mention all of the other rappers i've met and all the chicks i've met, lol, but seriously i could quit my job and do this but and make some decent cakek
