Just wondering how or whats the secret on getting a buzz round town. Ive seen alot of acts that seem more phoney then real deal just wondering how to get the name out? internet, shows, flyers, etc. just need some help with this. Whats the best route if ur trying to do this by yourself wit the homies ofcourse.

no secret just simple marketing...you mentioned most of them...add networking to that list and you're golden...

Drop into studios... meet owners... ask to sit in on some of their sessions... attend open mics and hand out flyers, build relationships with other people affiliated with music.

get ur self a nice Street Team..

my street team does me wonders.. and i dont even have anything worth promotin lol

First thing I would suggest, being that i have done it and found it fruitful, is compiling a cd with your joints (You may prefer if vocals were recorded on your joints). Pay for cd inserts. that wont be too much. And sell them hand to hand. Most people are afraid to go that route, or they just lack the nerve to walk up to someone and ask for their money for their cd. But, if you really think you got the goods.....then Why Not! You would be surprised how many people will actually buy your cd from you on the street. The key is to make it inexpensive. Dont try and turn a 400% profit. You arent looking for the money(you have to at least recoop ur costs) you are looking for the exposure. Put your msypace info and all that on the cd with a number that will stay ON. and after you have sold 300-500, you watch how your local buzz grows. THIS IS NOT JUST SMOKE IM BLOWING. I HAVE DONE IT!!!

You sold 300 hand to hand?

And what kinda stuff did you say to the ppl you talked to, to get them interested in buying?
How much you charge?

300? I have sold tens of thousands man.

Yea dude...I'm not playing. My partner/emcee ChanzizR and I have sold more than gold on the street during the last 3 years. Our Buzz is insane. Trust that you know somebody who know somebody who know some-bout-us. But enough of all that talk. Yea man....You have to be a hustler. If you feel like your stuff is good, then people will see it in your eyes. That's the first thing. You gotta believe they need to have your joint. Then you have to have a pitch. Everybody who has worked any type pf job, had some sort of script or hustle pitch. Nah mean. You just need to make one for your music and your cd. And if you can stop a person and get them to listen to you and your pitch for more than a 60 seconds. CAKE. you need to get money from them. Now to address your other question. We manufacture our of cd's. Only outsource for inserts. We actually sell the service but nevermind that for now. We sold our cd's for 1 dollar in the beginning. This was 3 years ago mind you. No one could believe it. everyone thought we were stupid. But dig this. While other people were selling their cd's for 10 dollars, we sold them for one. Now guess how fast our cd's sold dude. Like realistically speaking. We were murdering them cats man. So my point is. If you can make a good product, and man up and get out there and formulate a good pitch to go with it....while asking for little in return (keep your price down).....you will get money and not have to work. The first week my partner and I went out....we sold 1,000 cd's. It was hard. we spent a lot of time on the street on some real duffle bag boy ish nah mean. not that dramatization. but we came home with 90 - 200 dollars per night.....after that week. We both quit work. And thats no jive. call me on it and ill bust your eardrums with the truth. S****. dude at this point we just need an A&R. But anyway to hell with that talk for now too. I ramble cause my mind stays clicking. Aight man. hope that was of help. Peace!

LMFAO, damn duke, u got a New Jersey/New York mindset hustle lol..

but yea, thats how u do it.. hustle the hustlers, sell to everybody, everybody is a money sign..

also, u gotta have a confidence in ur self.. people like that sh*t

Oh....I can't really tell you our pitch. Cause It wont work for you. Only you can develop a pitch for your music. NOBODY can steal a pitch from you, that is truely effective. Because if it works well, it really has nothing to do with your words at all. It's how you come across all together. That's why you have to get out there and break your cherry. Then you will find out what works for you and what doesn't. The more "no's" you get the better. Especially at first. When I say that, I mean to say that, the "No's" will help you stop saying whatever it is you have been saying to be told no. It won't take you more than a good 3 hour shift on the street to start getting "No's." And WHEN, not if, you get your first sale from a stranger.....your pitch will begin to develop itself. Now once you get seasoned.... few weeks in. You will learn who to target and how to approach them. Then you should be looking for "More Yeses." But jewel I just took time to drop on you means absolutely, not a single ingle tiny bit, if your stuff is whack. Cause people talk. And you will see what I mean. Cause as people talk and hear about you. the sales in the street will either get easier to come by, Or a whole lot harder to find. And you can take that to the bank! Keep Rocking Though....cause we have all witnessed, how even the whackest of stuff, can get a deal. Peace again!

I see everything your saying!

one of my selling points was yo if you want the cd now you can buy it from me but if you dont here check out my website then ill give the consumer the second option and give him my flyer with my website and myspace page where you can also buy it from there also after checking out the music. then boom you got two option to give him better then just one. Man startin a new movement is where im goin to take it. thanks for the breakdown on how you do you pimpn. it looks like u on ur way of making a name for urself. good lookin out players. What do you think of givin them an added merchandise with the cd like autographed poster or flyer or tshirt?

I think i forgot to mention this before. And you might believe me or not.....but we never like never played the cd for people. We didnt have an ipod or discman or radio. You DON'T want to do it like that. Cause people will waste your time trying to listen to the whole damn cd and sales will have walked on by u. Trust me....if your pitch is good....and your cd at least looks like you put somthing into it, ie flashy insert. That is all u need. Be careful giving people the option to say no right away. Next thing you know, everyone is just gonna say "i'll go check u out. if i like it i'll buy it." problem with that is that more than half of the people will never get around to checking it out. Thats too much work. Just ask for the money right then and there. the flyer thing should be used as an absolute last resort. Even then you shouldn't give it to everyone. People take flyers just to be nice....and when they turn the corner or get home and clean out the purse.....**** goes in the trash. Sign the cd dude. It's the easiest thing. Thats what we did. And it adds a value to their purchase. They might buy it on the strength of the signature. Cause everyone likes to gamble. And say to them...."what if 9 years ago Jay Z was walking thru here selling his cd with a signature and for only ( ) dollars. You would be really mad at yourself today if you turned him down." That may get you more sales than you know.and whatever you do....DONT STAND IN THE SAME SPOT WITH A TABLE OR SOME CORNY ISH LIKE THAT. Keep it moving.....You will see more people like that....and more people means more chances to get paid. Good Luck However you go about it.

Never give anything. Make it part of your price. T-shirt and cd = 7 bucks or something like that. just make a profit and dont loose money giving away ish. Earlier I said keep your price down. But I didnt say give stuff away. Peace.

would it be a good idea to start off in Audio Engineering too? I figure that would be a good idea to get industry connects while I work on my beats.

That wouldn't be a bad idea if that suits your situation. I would see about setting up a recoding studio situation of your own as well. you may be able to sell your services after you get good enough. and then selling your cd's will be benificial for promoting that as well. just get it moving.

I did this for one day and it was cool. Earned some decent money, and this helps you overcome a lot of fears and being nervous. Which helps you in this muzik game especially for me being a dj. I knew some of this like keep movin, and neva give anything for free, but there were parts I didnt know like letting the hear it first, etc. Thx B Scientist, that increased my earnings....

malls, colleges, the strip, corner downtown, local shows, outside after the club lets out, or all the above or is there one best bet you go to all the time.
