What was the big deal with Led Zeppelin??

I know they are not hip hop, but I'm sure many samplers here have heard or sampled their songs, and since the rock section is dead, maybe you could help me out.

The story of Led Zeppelin is fascinating me right now. This band released no singles, were almost anonymous. They stayed away from the media and rarely ever had interviews. Their biggest album (and biggest selling rock album ever) didn't have any name on it. But they became the most popular rock band ever. Even bigger than The Beatles.

I've been listening to their songs and I don't get why they were so popular.

Any Led Zeppelin fans here can explain what makes them so great?

Dude...I was listening to some rock stations on a long drive a few months ago. And some Led Zeppelin songs came on...and them joints was FUKKIN ILL!!!!

They combined rock and blues in a way that I hadn't really heard before. I was like OMG, WHO IS THIS?!?!?

If those joints I heard were indicative of their catalog, then I see why they were the sh*t.

In fact, I'm about to go listen right now.

Well Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath both basically invented the hard rock and heavy metal genre...

Wikipedia said:
With their heavy, guitar-driven sound, Led Zeppelin are regularly cited as one of the progenitors of heavy metal[1] and hard rock music.

every single member of that band drove new paths. you gotta remember you are listening to them in a time where you have already heard all the bands they influenced.when they were around there was no one that fused sounds the way they did.
every one of them was an exceptional musician, both naturally gifted and technically proficient.
every one of their "rock" songs is balls out awesome,so much swagger..they did have their wanky moments but they were outweighed by the genius that kept coming.
im gonna stop gushing

the riff at 1:45 just makes me happy

Actually, black people were doing heavy metal before black sabbath. Alot of unknown black metal bands didn't get the notice because racism was hardcore back in the day. Esp in the 60's

Check this band from 1967 Black metal from black artists.

I've spend the day listening to their catalog and I only like about 4 or 5 songs. When the levee breaks is cool, stairway to heaven, kashmir, no quater, babe I'm gonna leave you. The others are just OK.

I've also noticed that I've actually heard so many of these songs before. I just didn't know it was by them. So many movies have Led Zeppelin songs.

And Sean Kingston's Me Love was sampled from Led Zeppelin. Hmmm.

I also see that they were a bit harder than other music at that time.

Their drummer is GODLY.

AA few other black metal bands

- God Forbid
- Straight Line Stitch
- Living Colour
- Fishbone

Founded in 1985 by guitarist Vernon Reid, journalist Greg Tate and producer Konda Mason in reaction to the constrictions that the commercial music industry places on Black artists, the BRC is a collective of artists, writers, producers, publicists, activists and music fans assembled to maximize exposure and provide resources for Black artists who defy convention. To date, the BRC is the only national nonprofit organization dedicated to the complete creative freedom of Black musicians.

why would i watch an entire 1 hour documentary when the link you posted to support your argument wasnt even metal.

i dont dispute the origins of rock music,i just dont see why its being brought up in this thread.

those are metal musicians in that documentary. I was responding to some one saying led zepplin and black sabbath created metal. That is not true.

A few other black metal bands

- God Forbid
- Straight Line Stitch

More metal musicians are in this documentary. Just watch it and learn. This is a response. LEARN SOMETHING FOR A CHANGE!

you probably dont know what heavy metal music is...

i know what it is. I know it existed before ozzy and robert plant. They even say it themselves. The media has made the younger audience not know the history of music because of racism. All of these guys were influenced by black unknown artists.

Down the Tracks: The Music That Influenced Led Zeppelin- DVD

Synopsis

Few music lovers would argue that Led Zeppelin paved the road for some of the best hard rock and heavy metal bands ever, but are they really as original as some fervent fans claim? In this release, filmmakers explore how the Led Zeppelin sound may have never come to be if it weren't for the powerful influence of such respected blues musicians as Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Son House, Davey Graham, and Bukka White. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

not to fuel all the conspiracy bs, but that song "Stairway to Heaven" has satanic messages when played backwards. REAL CREEPY

Starts at 3:36
"Oh here's to my sweet Satan, the one whose little path would make me sad,
whose power is Satan, he'll give those with him 666
There was a little tool shed where he made us suffer, sad Satan"
