What rappers don't write

Written raps sound better anyways IMO... I saw a vid of Jay-Z rapping freestyling to "December 4th" off the black album... but he could have written it all down prior to the recording.

Oh and I know he isn't a rapper, but I remember Timbo saying that Justin Timberlake didn't write a thing for the whole "Future Sex/Lovesounds" album... but I call shinanigans on that...

If an artist doesn't write, it doesn't necessarily make him/her a great MC..

I don't know if Soulja Boy and Gucci write their lyrics down
imo it would be an epic fail if they did.....

I think the punch in method is my favorite. As far as freestyling it has its upsides and downsides. I think for one it has the circus appeal where the listener is supposedly thinking: wow this is all freestyle, this person is talented. So therefore it brings character to a flow since it represents a high level of brain power. Theres also the aspect that freestyle makes you say things that you might never write down which makes the flow kind of more "real" or the nuances of it are more detailed in a slightly more truthful way.

The downsides are that its rare that the upsides overpower the bad. So having interesting content on a freestyle might me a lot more rare and inconsistent as opposed to if you crafted/wrote a verse in detail to make it entertaining.

Also if recording every line one at a time, it usually has better intonation and "acting" behind it and translates most potently for the listener. After written down, they should be memorized for maximum character communication.

What did Lil Wayne do on Dedication 2 specifically? I heard its mostly freestyle but what does that mean exactly?

The writing in the head thing isn't as hard as people may think. I haven't physically written a rap on paper since 06-07. If you practice it, then it can be mastered, unless your memory is just not on point.

What about freestyling for like a whole hour straight with the beat on loop and then after having lots of material, going back, listening to it all and picking out the best overall stuff and making a hot 16 out of that. Like going back and writing down only the best from what you freestyled and then going back and re-recording just the good stuff.

Does anyone do that?

not that I know of but I wouldn't be surprised if someone did that

I found a good way to do 16 bars is to loop record and stack vocals and do as many takes as you want until you come up with 16 bars that are decent and fit together nicely enough. I prefer to write, or pay somebody else to write for me. Nothing wrong with getting a ghost writer if you are short of time to write for yourself. Every other genre does it.

I don't think I could sleep at night knowing somebody ghostwrote for me. Too much pride and talent and belief in myself for all of that. Not knocking you though.

As far as that recording method goes, it sounds alright. The problem with that is what if some bars didn't fit with that song and instead fit another idea. So you plug that in but then when you do the other song, it has lines that fit other songs. Vicious cycle.

Sometimes you can spit of the top if your really feelin in the "zone" but if your not sometimes your stuff just comes out wack. I usually spit fire freestylin but i usually go back and shine my lyrics up a bit.
