What happened to the Longevity of Hip-hop

I was wondering, What could I post and would be a good discussion? Why is it that rap songs have the attention span of a fly? But, you see other genres like rock and country songs have spans that last generations! What could we do to change that?
 
there are metric tons of hip hop songs that have stood the test of time
 
^co-sign. Plenty of rap releases that have lasted. Think of it like this, Illmatic came out in 16 years ago, Reasonable Doubt 14, Aquemini 12, Life After Death 13, All Eyes on Me 14 years. Now tell me those records don't hold up. Plus, compared to rock and country, hip hop is still VERY young. Rock has been out since like the early 50's. Country has been around just as long if not longer. Hip-hop's been around since the late 70's - early 80's. Something to think about.
 
thats only been something thats been happening in the last 5 years and really only in the mainstream. I think Mainstream hip hop has in a way severed ties with the original art form of hip hop itself. At this point its more like a genre of pop rather than traditional hip hop and I think in some ways people don't like that.
 
most modern songs nowdays just are mediocre. it's not just hiphop. technology is a double edged sword it allowed people to make music without a clue about it. but it also allowed musicians to make music easier. I'm guessing within the next 5 years it will balance out again. the novelty of making music on computers will fade, and musicians will remain making music, while the people looking for a novelty will find something else to do.

So your saying people will just wake in the morning one day and decide not to use technology if anything it's only gonna become more easier to just get on computer to make a beat
 
that's not what I'm saying. Are trying to play devils advocate?

What I'm saying is when ever the is a technological break through, there is a period of novelty when there is wide excitement for the new piece. But over time the novelty fades and is used more with more finesse. Examples: Drum Machines (back in the 80s they were all over the place in genres that don't make sense), Synthesizers (when they first came out they were a novelty, used for remakes of other songs), I can go on and on with more examples.

Computer production is still in it's novelty phase, over time it will become more refined and serious musicians will continue doing this, but most will find a new gimmick. Computer will still be used for music, but more seriously.

Basically, technology has allowed already established musicians to make better music, easier. However, it's also allowed the market to be flooded by bullshit, like your Soulja Boys, GS Boys, Shop Boyz, Dem Franchize Boyz, or anything that can conceivably end in a final "boy".

That was an excellent point.
 
There is no more room for longevity because the minute one song fades away, there's another replica with different lyrics to take it's place.

You can play trap songs from now until tomorrow (literally)... which one would stand out and why - when they all sound similar? What about those Justin Bieber, Taio Cruz type songs... you could run those all day too... none would really be set up to have "longevity", they'd be there to cash in real quick.

So basically music is just kinda of background noise now, like static on a TV... it's too quiet without it but any old static will do.

yep... songs of 2day, many of them dont have the uniqueness that other songs have had over the years to have longevity... its basically alot of rehash of unoriginal songs that were out in the last 5 yrs... this is why Drake, Em, Kanye, or even Lupe, would stand out... more original content... not followin the normal bs we would here from tons of other artists that were bein played on the radio.

What happened is that MTV CRIBS killed the entire music game.

Artists no longer care about longevity, catalog, body of work, legacy... they care about cash. Ask me straight up which one I would rather have and I'd tell you flat out... cash.

Once people got to see other people with lesser talent living the lavish CRIBS life... creativity and all of that musical integrity stuff went out the window. Artist started to think "When I'm done, I want to live like that!".

It's also the reason there are so many artists, producers, singers, etc.

I blame everything on MTV CRIBS. That show is produced by the Illuminati. It's designed to keep everybody that watches it in a constant contest for dollars. If I had Usher's house and I kept watching CRIBS, I'd eventually want BabyFace's house... and If I were BabyFace, I'd want Oprah's house and if I were Oprah, I'd want to buy Idaho.

It's as if money is going to disappear tomorrow and you had better get all you can today. It's the reason NBA stars play with who has the best money deal, not who has the best team. They can buy a ring that's more expensive (but not as prestigeous) than an NBA ring.

It's the reason you pick the pretty girl that all the ballers want and will make your life hell instead of the average chick that loves you to death.

Nobody cares about longevity, it's a material world... thank you CRIBS.

I mean look at CRIBS and look at the artists that ARE NOT into Hip Hop and RNB... and you'll see that even they adapt some of the attitude of people in the Hip Hop genre.

One dude on there had a MPC just because... it wasn't even hooked up and how many people do you see with rims on their whip when that's not even something their "genre" smiles upon. They got 'em just because they could.... because somebody on CRIBS had some. What about the Cristal everybody used to have in their fridge... or everybody saying "this is where the magic happens" when they show off their bedroom...

Nothing is original people just try to outdo each other... so people watching CRIBS... just want to get on CRIBS and have the best house on CRIBS.

i agree with the sentimental of this post. Look at the amount of people who want to be hip hop producers now; and look at the amount of hip hop producers back in the day. F*ck sake. After peoople see storch's crib and ushers cribs then they want that life style. Like look at how many people want to be rock producer--zeroooooooooooo because there aint that many rich assss rock producers compared to "hip hop".

I don't live as slovenly as he does, but I definitely can appreciate that "frat boy in his 30s and 40s" steelo. He was beer budget. Haha!
 
ok i would say it like this... since rap songs only deal with money and girls and stuff that everyone has heard then it will go away quick. if you listen to most rock songs then they have another point of view other than money and girls... thats what i believe

LONGEVITY and hip hop aren't "supposed" to go together.

you're considered "over the hill" when you enter you 30's...hip hop has this stigma that it's only for "young" people...people that don't seek value, useful information, or "longevity" from their music.

COMMERCIAL hip hop (and even a lot of underground hip hop) has been DILUTED.

some people say it's just a sign of the times / hip hop's "evolution", but really, it's just a lot of ignorant black people (and others) w/ out useful core values & morals w/ a microphone in one hand and a rental-agreement in the other.

that was AMAZING, f7cked door bell, shoe box full of money, guy passed out on the floor and the place was a f7cking mess.

favourite part was the fact that all his plaques were just behind a sofa all cracked.
